Some theoretical aspects in computational analysis of adhesive lap joints

This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of bidimensional bonded lap joints. For this purpose, the stress singularities occurring at the intersections of the adherend-adhesive interfaces with the free edges are first investigated and a method for computing both the order and the intensity factor of these singularities is described briefly. After that, a simplified model, in which the adhesive domain is reduced to a line, is derived by using an asymptotic expansion method. Then, assuming that the assembly debonding is produced by a macro-crack propagation in the adhesive, the associated energy release rate is computed. Finally, a homogenization technique is used in order to take into account a preliminary adhesive damage consisting of periodic micro-cracks. Some numerical results are presented

Assessment of sugarcane cultivars with stable reaction to Xanthomonas albilineans under mechanical inoculation conditions

Leaf scald caused by Xanthomonas albilineans in sugarcane is one of the most important diseases around the world since it causes severe losses in both agricultural and industrial yields. In Cuba, resistance to this disease is considered a major selection criterion within the breeding program. The aim of this work was to detect sugarcane cultivars with stable reaction to X. albilineans by using both additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) and linear general models. For this, 16 cultivars planted simultaneously in 2015, 2016, and 2017 in two locations: Jovellanos (Matanzas) and Florida (CamagĂŒey) in Cuba were mechanically inoculated with a bacterial isolate previously characterized by sequencing its DNA fragment. Disease severity was recorded in plant cane and first ratoon, and results were consistent in both analyses and revealed that L55-5 and C323-68 were the most susceptible cultivars and C1051-73 was the most resistant; however, C1051-73, C275-80, C86-12, C88-382, C89-147, My5514, and Ty86-28 were the most stable across the years and localities evaluated. Results will allow adapting the methodology for the evaluation of the reaction to leaf scald of new sugarcane cultivars.Fil: La O HechavarrĂa, MarĂa. New GOLD classification: Longitudinal data on group assignment

    Get PDF
Rationale: Little is known about the longitudinal changes associated with using the 2013 update of the multidimensional GOLD strategy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Objective: To determine the COPD patient distribution of the new GOLD proposal and evaluate how this classification changes over one year compared with the previous GOLD staging based on spirometry only. Methods: We analyzed data from the CHAIN study, a multicenter observational Spanish cohort of COPD patients who are monitored annually. Categories were defined according to the proposed GOLD: FEV1%, mMRC dyspnea, COPD Assessment Test (CAT), Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ), and exacerbations-hospitalizations. One-year follow-up information was available for all variables except CCQ data. Results: At baseline, 828 stable COPD patients were evaluated. On the basis of mMRC dyspnea versus CAT, the patients were distributed as follows: 38.2% vs. 27.2% in group A, 17.6% vs. 28.3% in group B, 15.8% vs. 12.9% in group C, and 28.4% vs. 31.6% in group D. Information was available for 526 patients at one year: 64.2% of patients remained in the same group but groups C and D show different degrees of variability. The annual progression by group was mainly associated with one-year changes in CAT scores (RR, 1.138; 95%CI: 1.074-1.206) and BODE index values (RR, 2.012; 95%CI: 1.487-2.722). Conclusions: In the new GOLD grading classification, the type of tool used to determine the level of symptoms can substantially alter the group assignment. A change in category after one year was associated with longitudinal changes in the CAT and BODE index

Demographic and clinical profile of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients in Spain: the SEPAR National Registry

BackgroundLittle is known on the characteristics of patients diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in Spain. We aimed to characterize the demographic and clinical profile of IPF patients included in the IPF National Registry of the Spanish Respiratory Society (SEPAR).MethodsThis is a prospective, observational, multicentre and nationwide study that involved 608 IPF patients included in the SEPAR IPF Registry up to June 27th, 2017, and who received any treatment for their disease. IPF patients were predominantly males, ex-smokers, and aged in their 70s, similar to other registries.ResultsUpon inclusion, meanSD predicted forced vital capacity was 77.6%+/- 19.4, diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide was 48.5%+/- 17.7, and the 6-min walk distance was 423.5m +/- 110.4. The diagnosis was mainly established on results from the high-resolution computed tomography in the proper clinical context (55.0% of patients), while 21.2% of patients required invasive procedures (surgical lung biopsy) for definitive diagnosis. Anti-fibrotic treatment was prescribed in 69.4% of cases, 51.5% pirfenidone and 17.9% nintedanib, overall with a good safety profile. Conclusions The SEPAR IPF Registry should help to further characterize current characteristics and future trends of IPF patients in Spain and compare/pool them with other registries and cohorts

20-Nor-abietane and rearranged abietane diterpenoids from the root of Salvia argentea

From the root of Salvia argentea three new abietane diterpenoids, 1R-hydroxymiltirone, arucadiol and 1-keto-aethiopinone, have been isolated, together with the previously known diterpenes isopimara-8(9),15-diene, salvipisone, ferruginol and aethiopinone. The structures of the new compounds were established by spectroscopic means. © 1986.Peer Reviewe
