    Entanglement in a molecular three-qubit system

    We study the entanglement properties of a molecular three-qubit system described by the Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian with anisotropic exchange interactions and including an external magnetic field. The system exhibits first order quantum phase transitions by tuning two parameters, xx and yy, of the Hamiltonian to specific values. The three-qubit chain is open ended so that there are two types of pairwise entanglement : nearest-neighbour (n.n.) and next-nearest-neighbour (n.n.n.). We calculate the ground and thermal state concurrences, quantifying pairwise entanglement, as a function of the parameters xx, yy and the temperature TT. The entanglement threshold and gap temperatures are also determined as a function of the anisotropy parameter xx. The results obtained are of relevance in understanding the entanglement features of the recently engineered molecular Cr7NiCr_{7}Ni-Cu2+Cu^{2+}-Cr7NiCr_{7}Ni complex which serves as a three-qubit system at sufficiently low temperatures.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures, revtex

    Dietary dairy product intake and incident type 2 diabetes: a prospective study using dietary data from a 7-day food diary

    The consumption of specific dairy types may be beneficial for the prevention of diabetes. Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between total and types of dairy product intake and risk of developing incident type 2 diabetes, using a food diary. Methods: A nested case-cohort within the EPIC-Norfolk Study was examined, including a random subcohort (n=4,000) and cases of incident diabetes (n=892, including 143 cases in the subcohort) followed-up for 11 years. Diet was assessed using a prospective 7-day food diary. Total dairy intake (g/day) was estimated and categorised into high-fat (≥3.9%) and low-fat (<3.9% fat) dairy, and by subtype into yoghurt, cheese and milk. Combined fermented dairy product intake (yoghurt, cheese, sour cream) was estimated and categorised into high- and low-fat. Prentice-weighted Cox regression HRs were calculated. Results: Total dairy, high-fat dairy, milk, cheese and high-fat fermented dairy product intakes were not associated with the development of incident diabetes. Low-fat dairy intake was inversely associated with diabetes in age- and sex-adjusted analyses (tertile [T] 3 vs T1, HR 0.81 [95% CI 0.66, 0.98]), but further adjustment for anthropometric, dietary and diabetes risk factors attenuated this association. In addition, an inverse association was found between diabetes and low-fat fermented dairy product intake (T3 vs T1, HR 0.76 [95% CI 0.60, 0.99]; ptrend=0.049) and specifically with yoghurt intake (HR 0.72 [95% CI 0.55, 0.95]; ptrend=0.017) in multivariable adjusted analyses. Conclusions/interpretation: Greater low-fat fermented dairy product intake, largely driven by yoghurt intake, was associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes development in prospective analyses. These findings suggest that the consumption of specific dairy types may be beneficial for the prevention of diabetes, highlighting the importance of food group subtypes for public health messages

    Identifying and mitigating residual vibrations in wave-based control of lumped, flexible systems

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Wave-based control (WBC) is a technique for motion control of under-actuated flexible sys-tems. It envisages actuator motion as launching a motion wave into the system, while simulta-neously absorbing any wave returning from the system. For rest-to-rest motion the net launch displacement is set at half the target displacement. In absorbing the returning wave and vibra-tions, WBC moves the system the remaining distance to the target, with zero steady-state error. The focus of this paper is on very small residual vibrations around the target position which can endure for a long time after arrival at target. This issue was discovered through a recent devel-opment within WBC context on controlling complex two-dimensional, mass-spring, beam-like arrays. To date their existence has been unidentified. This paper investigates and interprets the nature of these vibrations, explains and identifies them based on wave ideas, and finally offers a new wave-based approach to mitigate or suppress them. It also discusses their implication, not just for WBC but for the general problem of control of flexible systems

    Roughening of the (1+1) interfaces in two-component surface growth with an admixture of random deposition

    We simulate competitive two-component growth on a one dimensional substrate of LL sites. One component is a Poisson-type deposition that generates Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) correlations. The other is random deposition (RD). We derive the universal scaling function of the interface width for this model and show that the RD admixture acts as a dilatation mechanism to the fundamental time and height scales, but leaves the KPZ correlations intact. This observation is generalized to other growth models. It is shown that the flat-substrate initial condition is responsible for the existence of an early non-scaling phase in the interface evolution. The length of this initial phase is a non-universal parameter, but its presence is universal. In application to parallel and distributed computations, the important consequence of the derived scaling is the existence of the upper bound for the desynchronization in a conservative update algorithm for parallel discrete-event simulations. It is shown that such algorithms are generally scalable in a ring communication topology.Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, 77 reference

    A review of solar driven absorption cooling with photovoltaic thermal systems

    The aim of this investigation is to evaluate the recent advances in the field of solar absorption cooling systems from the viewpoint of solar collector types. A review in the area of photovoltaic thermal (PVT) absorption cooling systems is conducted. This review includes experimental and computational work focusing on collector types and their efficiencies and performance indicators. Compared to vapour compression air conditioning systems, 50% of primary energy was saved by using solar absorption cooling systems and 10–35% maximum electrical efficiency of PVT was achieved. This review shows that Coefficient of Performance (COP) for solar cooling systems is in the range of 0.1–0.91 while the thermal collector efficiencies are in the range of 0.06–0.64. The average area to produce cooling for single effect absorption chillers for experimental and computational projects is 4.95 m2/kWc and 5.61 m2/kWc respectively. The specific area for flat plat collector (FPC) is in the range of 2.18–9.4 m2/kWc, while for evacuated tube collector (ETC) is in the range of 1.27–12.5 m2/kWc. For concentrated photovoltaic thermal collector (CPVT) and PVT, the average area to produce cooling for solar absorption chillers are 2.72 m2/kWc and 3.1 m2/kWc respectively

    Operationalization, implications and correlates of the cultural deviance criterion for ICD-11 and DSM-5 prolonged grief disorder

    Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) is included in ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR and includes a requirement of cultural deviance. This study examined endorsement rates and factors associated with endorsement of this criterion among Danish bereaved spouses (n = 425) and their adult children (n = 159) four years post-loss. In total, 7.5% (n = 44) participants endorsed this criterion. Both including and excluding the criterion, the prevalence rates for probable DSM-5-TR PGD were 1.4% (n = 8) and 1.7% (n = 10), respectively and for probable ICD-11 PGD were 1.4% (n = 8) and 2.2% (n = 13), respectively. Age and gender of the deceased, age of the bereaved, greater grief severity, and comorbid psychopathology were positively associated with endorsement of the criterion. Findings demonstrate low endorsement of the cultural deviation criterion, that its inclusion excludes several potential PGD cases, and unanticipated associations with several factors raise questions about the criterion’s validity

    Capacities of Grassmann channels

    A new class of quantum channels called Grassmann channels is introduced and their classical and quantum capacity is calculated. The channel class appears in a study of the two-mode squeezing operator constructed from operators satisfying the fermionic algebra. We compare Grassmann channels with the channels induced by the bosonic two-mode squeezing operator.     Global entanglement in multiparticle systems

    We define a polynomial measure of multiparticle entanglement which is scalable, i.e., which applies to any number of spin-1/2 particles. By evaluating it for three particle states, for eigenstates of the one dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet and on quantum error correcting code subspaces, we illustrate the extent to which it quantifies global entanglement.
