    Domains pilot: Kent County Council HeadStart Project. Case studies in promoting resilience in vulnerable children

    This pilot exercise was undertaken as part of the Big Lottery funded HeadStart programme. HeadStart aims to improve the mental well-being of at-risk* 10 to 16 year-olds by investing up to Ā£75m in up to 12 local partnerships to facilitate and support: 1. the implementation of a locally developed, cross-disciplinary, multi-layered and integrated prevention strategy, with the young person and their needs at its core 2. the development of the necessary local conditions to enable that strategy to become sustainable in time 3. the development of a more robust evidence-base around ā€˜what worksā€™ in the area of mental well-being to be pro-actively shared beyond HeadStart with the aim of contributing to the national and local policy debate. Previous stages of HeadStart Kent involved knowledge transfer exercises in the form of seminars. KCC staff and the HeadStart programme partners were introduced to the theory of resilience and its application with vulnerable children. A key aim of the seminars was to ensure projects focused on promoting the protective factors associated with resilience when designing and delivering their services. The HeadStart seminars provided the knowledge transfer to partners delivering commissioned services specific to the programme. This pilot exercise will further contribute to the evidence gathering by working with KCC practitioners at the earlier stage of assessment using a resilience approach. Increasing the chance of children and young people demonstrating resilience when faced with adversity requires the enhancement of protective factors (those factors which shield the young person from potential blows to their resilience) and the reduction of risk (the removal or re-framing of potentially threatening events or issues). Therefore, it is useful to focus on resilience in terms of the areas or ā€˜domainsā€™ of a personā€™s life that can be manipulated or changed. The introduction of a domains approach to resilience at the assessment stage, will better inform intervention and support strategies based on a child or young personā€™s individual need

    Effects of Ī”ā¹-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) vapor inhalation in Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rats.

    An inhalation system based on e-cigarette technology produces hypothermic and antinociceptive effects of Ī”ā¹-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in rats. Indirect comparison of some prior investigations suggested differential impact of inhaled THC between Wistar (WI) and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats; thus, this study was conducted to directly compare the strains across inhaled and injected routes of administration. Groups (N = 8 per strain) of age-matched male SD and WI rats were prepared with radiotelemetry devices to measure temperature and then exposed to vapor from the propylene glycol (PG) vehicle or THC (25-200 mg/mL of PG) for 30 or 40 min. Additional studies evaluated effects of THC inhalation on plasma THC (50-200 mg/mL) and nociception (100-200 mg/mL) as well as the thermoregulatory effect of intraperitoneal injection of THC (5-30 mg/kg). Hypothermic effects of THC were more pronounced in SD rats, where plasma levels of THC were identical across strains, under either fixed inhalation conditions or injection of a mg/kg equivalent dose. Strain differences in hypothermia were largest after i.p. injection of THC, with SD rats exhibiting dose-dependent temperature reduction after 5 or 10 mg/kg, i.p. and the WI rats only exhibiting significant hypothermia after 20 mg/kg, i.p. The antinociceptive effects of inhaled THC (100, 200 mg/mL) did not differ significantly across the strains. These studies confirm an insensitivity of WI rats, compared with SD rats, to hypothermia induced by THC following inhalation conditions that produced identical plasma THC and antinociception.     A general numerical analysis program for the superconducting quasiparticle mixer

    A user-oriented computer program SISCAP (SIS Computer Analysis Program) for analyzing SIS mixers is described. The program allows arbitrary impedance terminations to be specified at all LO harmonics and sideband frequencies. It is therefore able to treat a much more general class of SIS mixers than the widely used three-frequency analysis, for which the harmonics are assumed to be short-circuited. An additional program, GETCHI, provides the necessary input data to program SISCAP. The SISCAP program performs a nonlinear analysis to determine the SIS junction voltage waveform produced by the local oscillator. The quantum theory of mixing is used in its most general form, treating the large signal properties of the mixer in the time domain. A small signal linear analysis is then used to find the conversion loss and port impedances. The noise analysis includes thermal noise from the termination resistances and shot noise from the periodic LO current. Quantum noise is not considered.     Modeling the non-recycled Fermi gamma-ray pulsar population

    We use Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope detections and upper limits on non-recycled pulsars obtained from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) to constrain how the gamma-ray luminosity L depends on the period P and the period derivative \dot{P}. We use a Bayesian analysis to calculate a best-fit luminosity law, or dependence of L on P and \dot{P}, including different methods for modeling the beaming factor. An outer gap (OG) magnetosphere geometry provides the best-fit model, which is L \propto P^{-a} \dot{P}^{b} where a=1.36\pm0.03 and b=0.44\pm0.02, similar to but not identical to the commonly assumed L \propto \sqrt{\dot{E}} \propto P^{-1.5} \dot{P}^{0.5}. Given upper limits on gamma-ray fluxes of currently known radio pulsars and using the OG model, we find that about 92% of the radio-detected pulsars have gamma-ray beams that intersect our line of sight. By modeling the misalignment of radio and gamma-ray beams of these pulsars, we find an average gamma-ray beaming solid angle of about 3.7{\pi} for the OG model, assuming a uniform beam. Using LAT-measured diffuse fluxes, we place a 2{\sigma} upper limit on the average braking index and a 2{\sigma} lower limit on the average surface magnetic field strength of the pulsar population of 3.8 and 3.2 X 10^{10} G, respectively. We then predict the number of non-recycled pulsars detectable by the LAT based on our population model. Using the two-year sensitivity, we find that the LAT is capable of detecting emission from about 380 non-recycled pulsars, including 150 currently identified radio pulsars. Using the expected five-year sensitivity, about 620 non-recycled pulsars are detectable, including about 220 currently identified radio pulsars.
