Predictive learning, prediction errors, and attention: evidence from event-related potentials and eye tracking

    Get PDF
Prediction error (‘‘surprise’’) affects the rate of learning: We learn more rapidly about cues for which we initially make incorrect predictions than cues for which our initial predictions are correct. The current studies employ electrophysiological measures to reveal early attentional differentiation of events that differ in their previous involvement in errors of predictive judgment. Error-related events attract more attention, as evidenced by features of event-related scalp potentials previously implicated in selective visual attention (selection negativity, augmented anterior N1). The earliest differences detected occurred around 120 msec after stimulus onset, and distributed source localization (LORETA) indicated that the inferior temporal regions were one source of the earliest differences. In addition, stimuli associated with the production of prediction errors show higher dwell times in an eyetracking procedure. Our data support the view that early attentional processes play a role in human associative learning

Symmetry breaking due to Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions in the kagome lattice

Due to the particular geometry of the kagom\'e lattice, it is shown that antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions are allowed and induce magnetic ordering. The symmetry of the obtained low temperature magnetic phases are studied through mean field approximation and classical Mont\'e Carlo simulations. A phase diagram relating the geometry of the interaction and the ordering temperature has been derived. The order of magnitude of the anisotropies due to Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions are more important than in non-frustrated magnets, which enhances its appearance in real systems. Application to the jarosites compounds is proposed. In particular, the low temperature behaviors of the Fe and Cr-based jarosites are correctly described by this model.Comment: 6 (revtex4) twocolumn pages, 6 .eps figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.

Aging in a topological spin glass

We have examined the nonconventional spin glass phase of the 2-dimensional kagome antiferromagnet (H_3 O) Fe_3 (SO_4)_2 (OH)_6 by means of ac and dc magnetic measurements. The frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility peak is characteristic of a critical slowing down at Tg ~ 18K. At fixed temperature below Tg, aging effects are found which obey the same scaling law as in spin glasses or polymers. However, in clear contrast with conventional spin glasses, aging is remarkably insensitive to temperature changes. This particular type of dynamics is discussed in relation with theoretical predictions for highly frustrated non-disordered systems.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Graded Lie algebras and q-commutative and r-associative parameters

We study graded Lie algebras whose transformation parameters are graded q-commutativive and r-associative. We study first some graded algebras over a field, with no zero divisors at the level of monomials in their graded algebra generators. These generators are q-commutative and r-associative. We address the cohomology of the q-function and r-functions, in particular we study quaternions and octonions. We then define algebras whose transformation parameters are q-commutative and r-associative. We address a generalization of a theorem by Scheunert on its relation to Lie (super)algebras. We show finally that for the cases studied by Scheunert there is always a real and faithful transformation parameter basis with the required q-commutativity. We use this basis to perform a transformation on the graded Lie algebra that relates it to a plain Lie (super)algebra while respecting the self-adjoint character of generators and preserving the group grading. Keywords: Graded Lie (super)algebras, Color Lie (super)algebras, noncommutative algebras, nonassociative algebras, cohomology of deformation parameters, perfect algebra. Detailed Radio Spectra of Selected Compact Sources in the Nucleus of M82

    Get PDF
We have determined detailed radio spectra for 26 compact sources in the starburst nucleus of M82, between 74 and 1.3 cm. Seventeen show low-frequency turnovers. One other has a thermal emission spectrum, and we identify it as an HII region. The low frequency turnovers are due to absorption by the interstellar gas in M82. New information on the AGN candidate 44.01+595, shows it to have a non-thermal falling powerlaw spectrum at the highest frequencies, and that it is strongly absorbed below 2 GHz. We derive large magnetic fields in the supernova remnants, of order 1-2 milliGauss, hence large pressures in the sources suggest that the brightest ones are either expanding or are strongly confined by a dense interstellar medium. From the largest source in our sample, we derive a supernova rate of 0.016 SN/yr.Comment: 19 pages, 7 tables, 29 figures, LaTeX, requires AAS macros v. 4.0. To appear in ApJ July 20, 199
