Bistable and dynamic states of parametrically excited ultrasound in a fluid-filled cavity
In this paper we have considered the problem of parametric sound generation
in an acoustic resonator flled with a fluid, taking explicitely into account
the influence of the nonlinearly generated second harmonic. A simple model is
presented, and its stationary solutions obtained. The main feature of these
solutions is the appearance of bistable states of the fundamental field
resulting from the coupling to the second harmonic. An experimental setup was
designed to check the predictions of the theory. The results are consistent
with the predicted values for the mode amplitudes and parametric thresholds. At
higher driving values a self-modulation of the amplitudes is observed. We
identify this phenomenon with a secondary instability previously reported in

Magnetic-field asymmetry of nonlinear mesoscopic transport
We investigate departures of the Onsager relations in the nonlinear regime of
electronic transport through mesoscopic systems. We show that the nonlinear
current--voltage characteristic is not an even function of the magnetic field
due only to the magnetic-field dependence of the screening potential within the
conductor. We illustrate this result for two types of conductors: A quantum
Hall bar with an antidot and a chaotic cavity connected to quantum point
contacts. For the chaotic cavity we obtain through random matrix theory an
asymmetry in the fluctuations of the nonlinear conductance that vanishes

Evidence of ongoing radial migration in NGC 6754: Azimuthal variations of the gas properties
Understanding the nature of spiral structure in disk galaxies is one of the
main, and still unsolved questions in galactic astronomy. However, theoretical
works are proposing new testable predictions whose detection is becoming
feasible with recent development in instrumentation. In particular, streaming
motions along spiral arms are expected to induce azimuthal variations in the
chemical composition of a galaxy at a given galactic radius. In this letter we
analyse the gas content in NGC 6754 with VLT/MUSE data to characterise its 2D
chemical composition and H line-of-sight velocity distribution. We find
that the trailing (leading) edge of the NGC 6754 spiral arms show signatures of
tangentially-slower, radially-outward (tangentially-faster, radially-inward)
streaming motions of metal-rich (poor) gas over a large range of radii. These
results show direct evidence of gas radial migration for the first time. We
compare our results with the gas behaviour in a -body disk simulation
showing spiral morphological features rotating with a similar speed as the gas
at every radius, in good agreement with the observed trend. This indicates that
the spiral arm features in NGC 6754 may be transient and rotate similarly as

Deep spectroscopic luminosity function of Abell 85: no evidence for a steep upturn of the faint-end slope
We present a new deep determination of the spectroscopic LF within the virial
radius of the nearby and massive Abell\,85 (A85) cluster down to the dwarf
regime (M* + 6) using VLT/VIMOS spectra for galaxies with m mag and mag arcsec. The
resulting LF from 438 cluster members is best modelled by a double Schechter
function due to the presence of a statistically significant upturn at the
faint-end. The amplitude of this upturn (),
however, is much smaller than that of the SDSS composite photometric cluster LF
by Popesso et al. 2006, -2. The faint-end slope of the LF in
A85 is consistent, within the uncertainties, with that of the field. The red
galaxy population dominates the LF at low luminosities, and is the main
responsible for the upturn. The fact that the slopes of the spectroscopic LFs
in the field and in a cluster as massive as A85 are similar suggests that the
cluster environment does not play a major role in determining the abundance of
