Automated, Miniaturized Instrument for Measuring Gene Expression in Space
To facilitate astrobiological studies on the survival and adaptation of microorganisms and mixed microbial cultures to space environment, we have been developing a fully automated, miniaturized system for measuring their gene expression on small spacecraft. This low-cost, multi-purpose instrument represents a major scientific and technological advancement in our ability to study the impact of the space environment on biological systems by providing data on cellular metabolism and regulation orders of magnitude richer than what is currently available. The system supports growth of the organism, lyse it to release the expressed RNA, label the RNA, read the expression levels of a large number of genes by microarray analysis of labeled RNA and transmit the measurements to Earth. To measure gene expression we use microarray technology developed by CombiMatrix, which is based on electrochemical reactions on arrays of electrodes on a semiconductor substrate. Since the electrical integrity of the microarray remains intact after probe synthesis, the circuitry can be employed to sense nucleic acid binding at each electrode. CombiMatrix arrays can be sectored to allow multiple samples per chip. In addition, a single array can be used for several assays. The array has been integrated into an automated microfluidic cartridge that uses flexible reagent blisters and pinch pumping to move liquid reagents between chambers. The proposed instrument will help to understand adaptation of terrestrial life to conditions beyond the planet of origin, identify deleterious effects of the space environment, develop effective countermeasures against these effects, and test our ability to sustain and grow in space organisms that can be used for life support and in situ resource utilization during long-duration space exploration. The instrument is suitable for small satellite platforms, which provide frequent, low cost access to space. It can be also used on any other platform in space, including the ISS. It can be replicated and used with only small modifications in multiple biological experiments with a broad range of goals in mind
ANÁLISE DO RUÍDO PRODUZIDO PELA CANETA DE ALTA ROTAÇÃO EM DIFERENTES PROCEDIMENTOS OPERATÓRIOS
O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o nível do ruído produzido pela caneta de alta rotação (Dabi Atlante – ano 2000) em diferentes procedimentos operatórios. Foram selecionados 30 dentes naturais posteriores extraídos, divididos em três grupos, com dez dentes cada : grupo I (dentes naturais para preparos cavitários em classe I), grupo II (dentes restaurados com amálgama) e grupo III (dentes restaurados com resina composta) para remoção das restaurações, em classe I, usando brocas cilíndricas picotadas (556). A medida do nível do ruído da caneta de alta rotação para cada grupo, foi realizada com aparelho medidor de nível de pressão sonora analógico (DECIBELÍMETRO; MOD. 886-2/890-2, COD. 00045, MARCA: SIMPSON). As médias de cada grupo foram: GRUPO I = 73,2 dB; GRUPO II= 73,8 dB; GRUPO III = 70,9 dB. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância e ao teste de Tukey que mostraram o GRUPO III com níveis de ruído estatisticamente significante menor comparado aos demais grupos ao nível de 5 % de significância. Após a obtenção dos resultados pode-se observar que a caneta de alta rotação apresentou em média ruído abaixo de 75 decibéis. A remoção de resina composta apresentou a menor média nos níveis de ruído
Outcomes after open and endovascular repair of non-ruptured true pancreaticoduodenal and gastroduodenal artery aneurysms associated with coeliac artery compression. A multicentre retrospective study
Objective: True aneurysms of the peri-pancreatic arcade (PDAA) have been attributed to increased collateral flow related to coeliac axis (CA) occlusion by a median arcuate ligament (MAL). Although PDAA exclusion is currently recommended, simultaneous CA release and the technique to be used are debated. The aim of this retrospective multicentre study was to compare the results of open surgical repair of true non-ruptured PDAA with release or CA bypass (group A) vs. coil embolisation of PDAA and CA stenting or laparoscopic release (group B). Methods: From January 1994 to February 2019, 57 consecutive patients (group A: 31 patients; group B: 26 patients), including 35 (61%) men (mean age 56 ± 11 years), were treated at three centres. Twenty-six patients (46%) presented with non-specific abdominal pain: 15 (48%) in group A and 11 (42%) in group B (p = .80). Results: No patient died during the post-operative period. At 30 days, all PDAAs following open repair and embolisation had been treated successfully. In group A, all CAs treated by MAL release or bypass were patent. In group B, 2/12 CA stentings failed at < 48 hours, and all MAL released by laparoscopy were successful. Median length of hospital stay was significantly greater in group A than in group B (5 vs. 3 days; p = .001). In group A, all PDAAs remained excluded. In group B, three PDAA recanalisations following embolisation were treated successfully (two redo embolisations and one open surgical resection). At six years, Kaplan–Meier estimates of freedom for PDAA recanalisation were 100% in group A, and 88% ± 6% in group B (p = .082). No PDAA ruptured during follow up. In group A, all 37 CAs treated by MAL release were patent, and one aortohepatic bypass occluded. In group B, five CAs occluded: four after stenting and the other after laparoscopic MAL release with two redo stenting and three aortohepatic bypasses. Estimates of freedom from CA restenosis/occlusion were 95% ± 3% for MAL release or visceral bypass, and 60% ± 9% for CA stenting (p = .001). Two late restenoses following CA stenting were associated with PDAA recanalisation. Conclusion: Current data suggest that open and endovascular treatment of PDAA can be performed with excellent post-operative results in both groups. However, PDAA embolisation was associated with few midterm recanalisations and CA stenting with a significant number of early and midterm failures
Leading and higher twists in the proton polarized structure function at large Bjorken x
A phenomenological parameterization of the proton polarized structure
function has been developed for x > 0.02 using deep inelastic data up to ~ 50
(GeV/c)**2 as well as available experimental results on both photo- and
electro-production of proton resonances. According to the new parameterization
the generalized Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule is predicted to have a
zero-crossing point at Q**2 = 0.16 +/- 0.04 (GeV/c)**2. Then, low-order
polarized Nachtmann moments have been estimated and their Q**2-behavior has
been investigated in terms of leading and higher twists for Q**2 > 1
(GeV/c)**2. The leading twist has been treated at NLO in the strong coupling
constant and the effects of higher orders of the perturbative series have been
estimated using soft-gluon resummation techniques. In case of the first moment
higher-twist effects are found to be quite small for Q**2 > 1 (GeV/c)**2, and
the singlet axial charge has been determined to be a0[10 (GeV/c)**2] = 0.16 +/-
0.09. In case of higher order moments, which are sensitive to the large-x
region, higher-twist effects are significantly reduced by the introduction of
soft gluon contributions, but they are still relevant at Q**2 ~ few (GeV/c)**2
at variance with the case of the unpolarized transverse structure function of
the proton. Our finding suggests that spin-dependent correlations among partons
may have more impact than spin-independent ones. As a byproduct, it is also
shown that the Bloom-Gilman local duality is strongly violated in the region of
polarized electroproduction of the Delta(1232) resonance.Comment: revised version to appear in Phys. Rev. D; extended discussion on the

Intrinsic tunneling spectra of Bi_2(Sr_{2-x}La_x)CuO_6
We have measured intrinsic-tunneling spectra of a single CuO-layer La-doped
Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+\delta} (Bi2201-La_x). Despite a difference of a factor
of three in the optimal superconducting critical temperatures for
Bi2201-La_{0.4} and Bi2212 (32 and 95 K, respectively) and different spectral
energy scales, we find that the pseudogap vanishes at a similar characteristic
temperature T*\approx 230-300K for both compounds. We find also that in
Bi2201-La_x, PG humps are seen as sharp peaks and, in fact, even dominate the

Time Dependent Current Oscillations Through a Quantum Dot
Time dependent phenomena associated to charge transport along a quantum dot
in the charge quantization regime is studied. Superimposed to the Coulomb
blockade behaviour the current has novel non-linear properties. Together with
static multistabilities in the negative resistance region of the I-V
characteristic curve, strong correlations at the dot give rise to
self-sustained current and charge oscillations. Their properties depend upon
the parameters of the quantum dot and the external applied voltages.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; to appear in PR
Nonlinear feedback oscillations in resonant tunneling through double barriers
We analyze the dynamical evolution of the resonant tunneling of an ensemble
of electrons through a double barrier in the presence of the self-consistent
potential created by the charge accumulation in the well.
The intrinsic nonlinearity of the transmission process is shown to lead to
oscillations of the stored charge and of the transmitted and reflected fluxes.
The dependence on the electrostatic feedback induced by the self-consistent
potential and on the energy width of the incident distribution is discussed.Comment: 10 pages, TeX, 5 Postscript figure
Dynamic instabilities in resonant tunneling induced by a magnetic field
We show that the addition of a magnetic field parallel to the current induces
self sustained intrinsic current oscillations in an asymmetric double barrier
structure. The oscillations are attributed to the nonlinear dynamic coupling of
the current to the charge trapped in the well, and the effect of the external
field over the local density of states across the system. Our results show that
the system bifurcates as the field is increased, and may transit to chaos at
