Past trauma and future choices: Differences in discounting in low-income, urban African Americans
AbstractBackgroundExposure to traumatic events is surprisingly common, yet little is known about its effect on decision making beyond the fact that those with post-traumatic stress disorder are more likely to have substance-abuse problems. We examined the effects of exposure to severe trauma on decision making in low-income, urban African Americans, a group especially likely to have had such traumatic experiences.MethodParticipants completed three decision-making tasks that assessed the subjective value of delayed monetary rewards and payments and of probabilistic rewards. Trauma-exposed cases and controls were propensity-matched on demographic measures, treatment for psychological problems, and substance dependence.ResultsTrauma-exposed cases discounted the value of delayed rewards and delayed payments, but not probabilistic rewards, more steeply than controls. Surprisingly, given previous findings that suggested women are more affected by trauma when female and male participants’ data were analyzed separately, only the male cases showed steeper delay discounting. Compared with nonalcoholic males who were not exposed to trauma, both severe trauma and alcohol-dependence produced significantly steeper discounting of delayed rewards.ConclusionsThe current study shows that exposure to severe trauma selectively affects fundamental decision-making processes. Only males were affected, and effects were observed only on discounting delayed outcomes (i.e. intertemporal choice) and not on discounting probabilistic outcomes (i.e. risky choice). These findings are the first to show significant differences in the effects of trauma on men's and women's decision making, and the selectivity of these effects has potentially important implications for treatment and also provides clues as to underlying mechanisms.</jats:sec
Morphological development and cytochrome c oxidase activity in Streptomyces lividans are dependent on the action of a copper bound Sco protein
Copper has an important role in the life cycle of many streptomycetes, stimulating the developmental switch between vegetative mycelium and aerial hyphae concomitant with the production of antibiotics. In streptomycetes, a gene encoding for a putative Sco-like protein has been identified and is part of an operon that contains two other genes predicted to handle cellular copper. We report on the Sco-like protein from
Streptomyces lividans
(Sco
Sl
) and present a series of experiments that firmly establish a role for Sco
Sl
as a copper metallochaperone as opposed to a role as a thiol-disulphide reductase that has been assigned to other bacterial Sco proteins. Under low copper concentrations, a Δ
sco
mutant in
S. lividans
displays two phenotypes; the development switch between vegetative mycelium and aerial hyphae stalls and cytochrome
c
oxidase (CcO) activity is significantly decreased. At elevated copper levels, the development and CcO activity in the Δ
sco
mutant are restored to wild-type levels and are thus independent of Sco
Sl
. A CcO knockout reveals that morphological development is independent of CcO activity leading us to suggest that Sco
Sl
has at least two targets in
S. lividans
. We establish that one Sco
Sl
target is the dinuclear Cu
A
domain of CcO and it is the cupric form of Sco
Sl
that is functionally active. The mechanism of cupric ion capture by Sco
Sl
has been investigated, and an important role for a conserved His residue is identified.

Simulated Galactic methanol maser distribution to constrain Milky Way parameters
Using trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of masers associated with
massive young stars, the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy (BeSSeL) survey has
reported the most accurate values of the Galactic parameters so far. The
determination of these parameters with high accuracy has a widespread impact on
Galactic and extragalactic measurements. This research is aimed at establishing
the confidence with which such parameters can be determined. This is relevant
for the data published in the context of the BeSSeL survey collaboration, but
also for future observations, in particular from the Southern Hemisphere. In
addition, some astrophysical properties of the masers can be constrained,
notably the luminosity function. We have simulated the population of
maser-bearing young stars associated with Galactic spiral structure, generating
several samples and comparing them with the observed samples used in the BeSSeL
survey. Consequently, we checked the determination of Galactic parameters for
observational biases introduced by the sample selection. Galactic parameters
obtained by the BeSSeL survey do not seem to be biased by the sample selection
used. In fact, the published error estimates appear to be conservative for most
of the parameters. We show that future BeSSeL data and future observations with
Southern arrays will improve the Galactic parameters estimates and smoothly
reduce their mutual correlation. Moreover, by modeling future parallax data
with larger distance and, thus, greater relative uncertainties for a larger
numbers of sources, we found that parallax-distance biasing is an important
issue. Hence, using fractional parallax uncertainty in the weighting of the
motion data is imperative. Finally, the luminosity function for 6.7 GHz
methanol masers was determined, allowing us to estimate the number of Galactic

First-Order Provenance Games
We propose a new model of provenance, based on a game-theoretic approach to
query evaluation. First, we study games G in their own right, and ask how to
explain that a position x in G is won, lost, or drawn. The resulting notion of
game provenance is closely related to winning strategies, and excludes from
provenance all "bad moves", i.e., those which unnecessarily allow the opponent
to improve the outcome of a play. In this way, the value of a position is
determined by its game provenance. We then define provenance games by viewing
the evaluation of a first-order query as a game between two players who argue
whether a tuple is in the query answer. For RA+ queries, we show that game
provenance is equivalent to the most general semiring of provenance polynomials
N[X]. Variants of our game yield other known semirings. However, unlike
semiring provenance, game provenance also provides a "built-in" way to handle
negation and thus to answer why-not questions: In (provenance) games, the
reason why x is not won, is the same as why x is lost or drawn (the latter is
possible for games with draws). Since first-order provenance games are
draw-free, they yield a new provenance model that combines how- and why-not
provenance
Grain growth in newly discovered young eruptive stars
FU Orionis-type stars are young stellar objects showing large outbursts due
to highly enhanced accretion from the circumstellar disk onto the protostar.
FUor-type outbursts happen in a wide variety of sources from the very embedded
ones to those with almost no sign of extended emission beyond the disk. The
subsequent eruptions might gradually clear up the obscuring envelope material
and drive the protostar on its way to become a disk-only T Tauri star. We used
VLT/VISIR to obtain the first spectra that cover the 8-13 m mid-infrared
wavelength range in low-resolution of five recently discovered FUors. Four
objects from our sample show the 10 m silicate feature in emission. We
study the shape and strength of the silicate feature in these objects and find
that they mostly contain large amorphous grains, suggesting that large grains
are typically not settled to the midplane in FUor disks. This is a general
characteristic of FUors, as opposed to regular T Tauri-type stars whose disks
display anything from pristine small grains to significant grain growth. We
classify our targets by determining whether the silicate feature is in emission
or in absorption, and confront them with the evolutionary scenarios on the
dispersal of the envelopes around young stars. In our sample, all Class II
objects exhibit silicate emission, while for Class I objects, the appearance of
the feature in emission or absorption depends on the viewing angle with respect
to the outflow cavity. This highlights the importance of geometric effects when

Knowledge Cartography for Controversies: The Iraq Debate
In analysing controversies and debates—which would include reviewing a literature in order to plan research, or assessing intelligence to formulate policy—there is no one worldview which can be mapped, for instance as a single, coherent concept map. The cartographic challenge is to show which facts are agreed and contested, and the different kinds of narrative links that use facts as evidence to define the nature of the problem, what to do about it, and why. We will use the debate around the invasion of Iraq to demonstrate the methodology of using a knowledge mapping tool to extract key ideas from source materials, in order to classify and connect them within and across a set of perspectives of interest to the analyst. We reflect on the value that this approach adds, and how it relates to other argument mapping approaches
High-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of hot subdwarfs
We report on high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the hot
subdwarf stars HD 76431 and Feige 66, using the ESPaDOnS echelle
spectropolarimeter at CFHT. We compute cross-correlation Stokes I and V line
profiles to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. We then average all available
cross-correlation profiles of each star to further decrease the noise level.
Although both targets were previously reported to host kilo-gauss magnetic
fields, we do not derive any evidence of large-scale photospheric fields from
our sets of observations, in spite of tight error bars on the longitudinal
field of the order of 60 gauss for HD 76431 and 200 gauss for Feige 66. A new
analysis of FORS1 observations of HD 76431, which provided the basis for the
original claim of field detection, confirms the absence of any detectable
Zeeman signature, with an error bar of about 100 gauss on the longitudinal

The provision of education and training for healthcare professionals through the medium of the internet
This paper describes a new initiative to provide Internet based courses to student and professional occupational therapists in four centres in the UK, Belgium the Netherlands and Sweden. The basis of this collaborative Occupational Therapy Internet School (OTIS) is the concept of the “Virtual College”. This comprises the design and implementation of a sophisticated Internet-based system through which courses can be managed, prepared and delivered online in an effective fashion, and where students can communicate both with the staff and their peers. The aim is to support and facilitate the whole range of educational activities within a remote electronic environment. A major feature of the course organisation is the adoption of a problem-based approach in which students will collaborate internationally to propose effective intervention in given case study scenarios.
The paper outlines the rationale for OTIS, the content and structure of the courseware, the technical specification of the system and evaluation criteria. In addition to the more conventional web-based learning facilities generally offered, a number of agent-based approaches are being adopted to assist in the management of the course by ensuring the proper delivery of course materials and to assist the functioning of project groups. </p
An Atomic and Molecular Study of the Interstellar Medium Around the SNR RCW 103
We report on the detection of HCO+ and 12CO emission in the rotational
transition J=1-0 in the vicinity of the shock front at the southern border of
the supernova remnant RCW 103, where previous infrared observations suggest an
interaction with a molecular cloud. The observations were carried out with the
Australian Millimeter Radiotelescope at Mopra. We observed a depletion of HCO+
behind the supernova shock front. In addition, we studied the interstellar
medium over an extended region towards RCW 103 based on archival 21 cm HI line
observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Parkes
Telescope. No atomic gas is observed in emission in coincidence with the
molecular feature. This absence is interpreted in terms of self absorption
