Global discourses and power/knowledge: theoretical reflections on futures of higher education during the rise of Asia
This paper re-reads a selection of critical interdisciplinary theories in an attempt to open a space in higher education for cross-cultural dialogue during the rise of Asia. Theories of globalization, deterritorialization, power/knowledge and postcolonialism indicate that students and academics have the ability to re-imagine and influence globalization processes in higher education. The current power effects of global discourses restrict the imaginaries and territories of globalization – leading to specific enactments in ways that prioritize western understandings of higher education. The paper argues for the need to explore hegemonic discursive formations of globalization to uncover processes of "othering" and the subjugation of knowledges. In this regard, a postcolonial perspective can help by opening up scenarios for the future of higher education in the Asian Century
Who governs and what is governed in port governance: a review study
Based on an intensive literature review, this paper investigates and presents generalized answers to the two basic questions of port governance, namely who governs and what is governed. There are totally 77 studies selected as the core literature sample according to a five-step approach. The results from literature review show evidences in favor of the important roles played by governmental organizations and port organizations as the main governing bodies of port governance. Furthermore, our analysis shows first, that multilevel governance has become a notable feature of port governance. Second, there are increasing involvements by national or regional levels of government in some countries such as the USA, Brazil, China. Third, port authorities at local level are generally holding the centre-stage position with further autonomy in managing port operations. Fourth, not-for-profit organizations related to port activities play the role of coordinators in port governance. Finally, different governance regimes with different specific governing actors for different port classifications can be identified for many nations. This study shows that fundamentally institutional arrangements and specific port activities are the two basic categories of what is governed. The institutional arrangements determine the port governance configuration and allocation of responsibilities of port activities. Alkaloid production by a Cinchona officinalis "Ledgeriana" hairy root culture containing constitutive expression constructs of tryptophan decarboxylase and strictosidine synthase cDNAs from Catharanthus roseus
Cinchona officinalis ‘Ledgeriana’, former
called Cinchona ledgeriana, hairy roots were initiated
containing constitutive-expression constructs of cDNAs
encoding the enzymes tryptophan decarboxylase
(TDC) and strictosidine synthase (STR) from Catharanthus roseus, two key enzymes in terpenoid indole
and quinoline alkaloid biosynthesis. The successful
integration of these genes and the reporter gene gus-int
was demonstrated using Southern blotting and the
polymerase chain reaction. The products of TDC and
STR, tryptamine and strictosidine, were found in high
amounts, 1200 and 1950 mg g–1 dry weight, respectively.
Quinine and quinidine levels were found to rise up to
500 and 1000 mg g–1 dry weight, respectively. The
results show that genetic engineering with multiple
genes is well possible in hairy roots of C. officinalis.
However, 1 year after analyzing the hairy roots for the
first time, they had completely lost their capacity to

Physical health and the onset and persistence of depression in older adults: an eight-wave prospective community based study.
Background. Poor physical health has long been recognized to be one of the most important risk factors for depression in older adults. Since many aspects of physical health can be targeted for improvement in primary care, it is important to know whether physical health problems predict the onset and/or the persistence of depression. Methods. The study is based on a sample which at the outset consisted of 327 depressed and 325 non-depressed older adults (55-85) drawn from a larger random community-based sample in the Netherlands. Depression was measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D) at eight successive waves. Results. From all incident episodes, the majority (57%) was short-lived. These short episodes could generally not be predicted by physical health problems. The remaining incident episodes (43%) were not short-lived and could be predicted by poor physical health. Chronicity (34%) was also predicted by physical health problems. Conclusions. The study design with its frequent measurements recognized more incident cases than previous studies; these cases however did have a better prognosis than is often assumed. The prognosis of prevalent cases was rather poor. Physical health problems were demonstrated to be a predictor of both the onset and the persistence of depression. This may well have implications for prevention and intervention

Excitation of superconducting qubits from hot non-equilibrium quasiparticles
Superconducting qubits probe environmental defects such as non-equilibrium
quasiparticles, an important source of decoherence. We show that "hot"
non-equilibrium quasiparticles, with energies above the superconducting gap,
affect qubits differently from quasiparticles at the gap, implying qubits can
probe the dynamic quasiparticle energy distribution. For hot quasiparticles, we
predict a non-neligable increase in the qubit excited state probability P_e. By
injecting hot quasiparticles into a qubit, we experimentally measure an
increase of P_e in semi-quantitative agreement with the model and rule out the

"That's the world standard": a critical ethnography of "Universal" knowledge
This paper analyzes how knowledge is reproduced as "universal" in contemporary higher education and how this production of universality influences the application of knowledge. Using a case study of clinical psychology, it describes the results of over two years of ethnographic fieldwork in a university and professional settings in Singapore with short comparative field studies in Australia and the Netherlands. The results provide critical insights into the cultural effects and knowledge contestations within transnational higher education

Parity Fluctuations Between Coulomb Blockaded Superconducting Islands
We find that if two superconducting islands of different number parity are
linked by a tunnel junction the unpaired electron in the odd island has a
tendency to tunnel into the even island. This process leads to fluctuations in
time of the number parity of each island, giving rise to a random telegraph
noise spectrum with a characteristic frequency that has an unusual temperature
dependence. This new phenomenon should be observable in a Cooper-pair pump and

Dynamic metabolic interactions and trophic roles of human gut microbes identified using a minimal microbiome exhibiting ecological properties
Microbe-microbe interactions in the human gut are influenced by host-derived glycans and diet. The high complexity of the gut microbiome poses a major challenge for unraveling the metabolic interactions and trophic roles of key microbes. Synthetic minimal microbiomes provide a pragmatic approach to investigate their ecology including metabolic interactions. Here, we rationally designed a synthetic microbiome termed Mucin and Diet based Minimal Microbiome (MDb-MM) by taking into account known physiological features of 16 key bacteria. We combined 16S rRNA gene-based composition analysis, metabolite measurements and metatranscriptomics to investigate community dynamics, stability, inter-species metabolic interactions and their trophic roles. The 16 species co-existed in the in vitro gut ecosystems containing a mixture of complex substrates representing dietary fibers and mucin. The triplicate MDb-MM's followed the Taylor's power law and exhibited strikingly similar ecological and metabolic patterns. The MDb-MM exhibited resistance and resilience to temporal perturbations as evidenced by the abundance and metabolic end products. Microbe-specific temporal dynamics in transcriptional niche overlap and trophic interaction network explained the observed co-existence in a competitive minimal microbiome. Overall, the present study provides crucial insights into the co-existence, metabolic niches and trophic roles of key intestinal microbes in a highly dynamic and competitive in vitro ecosystem.Peer reviewe
