    A Solution Set-Based Entropy Principle for Constitutive Modeling in Mechanics

    Entropy principles based on thermodynamic consistency requirements are widely used for constitutive modeling in continuum mechanics, providing physical constraints on a priori unknown constitutive functions. The well-known M\"uller-Liu procedure is based on Liu's lemma for linear systems. While the M\"uller-Liu algorithm works well for basic models with simple constitutive dependencies, it cannot take into account nonlinear relationships that exist between higher derivatives of the fields in the cases of more complex constitutive dependencies. The current contribution presents a general solution set-based procedure, which, for a model system of differential equations, respects the geometry of the solution manifold, and yields a set of constraint equations on the unknown constitutive functions, which are necessary and sufficient conditions for the entropy production to stay nonnegative for any solution. Similarly to the M\"uller-Liu procedure, the solution set approach is algorithmic, its output being a set of constraint equations and a residual entropy inequality. The solution set method is applicable to virtually any physical model, allows for arbitrary initially postulated forms of the constitutive dependencies, and does not use artificial constructs like Lagrange multipliers. A Maple implementation makes the solution set method computationally straightforward and useful for the constitutive modeling of complex systems. Several computational examples are considered, in particular, models of gas, anisotropic fluid, and granular flow dynamics. The resulting constitutive function forms are analyzed, and comparisons are provided. It is shown how the solution set entropy principle can yield classification problems, leading to several complementary sets of admissible constitutive functions; such problems have not previously appeared in the constitutive modeling literature

    The use of the free-range area by laying hens housed in a mobile system and the resulting condition of the range were investigated. The free-range was used very intensively. On an average of nine complete observation days 35 % of the birds (23 – 44 % means per day) were outside the house. The maximum of animals in the free range was 77 %. 75 % (60 – 95 %) of the hens outside the house stayed in an area of 20 m around the house. This led to deteriorated conditions of the range in these areas. By moving the mobile house regularly (after 2 weeks in summer and 6 weeks in winter) a destruction of the vegetation could be avoided, while after not moving the house for three months in winter a complementary seeding became necessary. We conclude that the use of mobile systems for poultry in conjunction with a regular change of position and sufficient area per animal can avoid destruction of the vegetation despite an intensive use of the free-range all year round

    In the last years free range poultry was often criticised for its negative impacts on environment. As the animals do not use the run equally, a big part of the excreted nutrients are accumulated in the area close to the poultry house. This can lead to an increased rate of nutrient loss especially nitrogen by leaching. Within this study the use of a mobile housing system for 1.000 layers on an organic farm in North Hessia with a mean of 700 mm precipitation per year and an average of 8,9°C (soil texture: loam in the first, silt loam in the second year) was observed for two years. A documentation and optimization of the management and regular investigations into the contents of mineral nitrogen in all parts of the outdoor run were carried out. The aim of the study was to survey, if a well-balanced distribution of nutrients can be reached by moving the house within the free-range and which management is necessary for that. The results showed a better distribution of mineral nitrogen in the second year, when the house was moved in winter time every six weeks, while the contents were slightly less well-balanced, when it stayed at one position for three months in the first winter . In both years the highest amounts of mineral nitrogen in any part of the hen run with 37 and 24 mg / kg DM were much lower than the contents of up to 160 mg / kg DM close to stationary houses examined in other studies. The results of this study show that a well-balanced distribution of nutrients in free-ranges for poultry can be reached by using mobile housing systems combined with the right management

    Machine learning for emergent middleware

    Highly dynamic and heterogeneous distributed systems are challenging today's middleware technologies. Existing middleware paradigms are unable to deliver on their most central promise, which is offering interoperability. In this paper, we argue for the need to dynamically synthesise distributed system infrastructures according to the current operating environment, thereby generating "Emergent Middleware'' to mediate interactions among heterogeneous networked systems that interact in an ad hoc way. The paper outlines the overall architecture of Enablers underlying Emergent Middleware, and in particular focuses on the key role of learning in supporting such a process, spanning statistical learning to infer the semantics of networked system functions and automata learning to extract the related behaviours of networked systems

    Optimierte Bestimmung der unterirdischen Pflanzenbiomasse in Theorie und Praxis

    Will man den C oder N Eintrag von Pflanzen ermitteln, muss die unterirdische Pflanzenbiomasse möglichst exakt bestimmt werden. Diese besteht aus der Rhizodeposition und dem Wurzelsystem einer Pflanze. Als Rhizodeposition wird die Abgabe von organischen und anorganischen Verbindungen bezeichnet. Sie setzt sich unter anderem aus Wurzelfragmenten, Wurzelrandzellen, Wurzelexudaten und Lysaten zusammen. Auf Grund einer fehlenden Wurzelraumbegrenzung, ist die Erfassung des vollständigen Wurzelsystems einer Pflanze im Freiland problematisch. Zur Quantifizierung von Wurzelsystemen sind jedoch Freilandversuche stets Gefäßversuchen vorzuziehen, da nur so ein ungestörtes Wurzelwachstum erreicht werden kann. Als Konsequenz lassen sich unterschiedliche Wurzel-Spross-Verhältnisse in Gefäß- und Freilandversuchen feststellen. Verlagerungsprozesse innerhalb der Pflanze können zusätzlich die Berechnung der Rhizodeposition beeinflussen und so zur Über- oder Unterschätzung der unterirdischen Pflanzenbiomasse führen. Ziel war daher ein Beprobungsschema zu entwickeln, welches es ermöglicht die Wurzelbiomasse im Freiland zu erfassen und unterschiedliche Berechnungsmethoden der Rhizodeposition zu vergleichen. Hierfür wurden sowohl im Gefäß als auch im Freiland Erbsen mittels Dochtmethode mit multiplen 13C und 15N-Pulsen markiert, wodurch eine annähernd kontinuierliche Markierung simuliert wurde. Die Wurzelbiomasse der Erbse wurde im Freiland bestimmt, indem Unterproben mit einem definierten Volumen in 3 festgelegten Positionen im Bestand genommen wurden (direkt auf einer Pflanze; zwischen 2 Pflanzen in der Reihe; in der Mitte von 4 Pflanzen zwischen 2 Reihen). Durch die unterschiedliche Gewichtung der Positionen, die sich aus dem Beprobungsdurchmesser und dem Pflanze-/Reihenabstand ergaben, konnte die vollständige Wurzelbiomasse bestimmt werden. Die Rhizodeposition wurde mit einer Massenbilanz (1) und mit der Janzen und Bruinsma Methode (2) ermittelt. Zum Zeitpunkt der Blüte waren die Wurzelbiomasse und das Wurzel-Spross-Verhältnis im Feld um ein vielfaches Größer verglichen mit dem Gefäß. Bei der Berechnung nach Janzen und Bruinsma können Verlagerungsprozesse während der Blüte zur Überschätzung der Rhizodeposition führen. Erfolgt eine kontinuierliche Markierung über den gesamten Vegetationsverlauf, so kann die Rhizodeposition am Kulturende sowohl nach Janzen und Bruinsma als auch mit der Massenbilanz berechnet werden

    Detection of Significant Prostate Cancer Using Target Saturation in Transperineal Magnetic Resonance Imaging/Transrectal Ultrasonography-fusion Biopsy

    BACKGROUND: Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) and targeted biopsies (TBs) facilitate accurate detection of significant prostate cancer (sPC). However, it remains unclear how many cores should be applied per target. OBJECTIVE: To assess sPC detection rates of two different target-dependent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS)-fusion biopsy approaches (TB and target saturation [TS]) compared with extended systematic biopsies (SBs). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective single-centre outcome of transperineal MRI/TRUS-fusion biopsies of 213 men was evaluated. All men underwent TB with a median of four cores per MRI lesion, followed by a median of 24 SBs, performed by experienced urologists. Cancer and sPC (International Society of Urological Pathology grade group ≥2) detection rates were analysed. TB was compared with SB and TS, with nine cores per target, calculated by the Ginsburg scheme and using individual cores of the lesion and its "penumbra". OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Cancer detection rates were calculated for TS, TB, and SB at both lesion and patient level. Combination of SB + TB served as a reference. Statistical differences in prostate cancer (PC) detection between groups were calculated using McNemar's tests with confidence intervals. RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: TS detected 99% of 134 sPC lesions, which was significantly higher than the detection by TB (87%, p = 0.001) and SB (82%, p < 0.001). SB detected significantly more of the 72 low-risk PC lesions than TB (99% vs 68%, p < 0.001) and 10% (p = 0.15) more than that detected by TS. At a per-patient level, 99% of men harbouring sPC were detected by TS. This was significantly higher than that by TB and SB (89%, p = 0.03 and 81%, p = 0.001, respectively). Limitations include limited generalisability, as a transperineal biopsy route was used. CONCLUSIONS: TS detected significantly more cases of sPC than TB and extended SB. Given that both 99% of sPC lesions and men harbouring sPC were identified by TS, the results suggest that this approach allows to omit SB cores without compromising sPC detection. PATIENT SUMMARY: Target saturation of magnetic resonance imaging-suspicious prostate lesions provides excellent cancer detection and finds fewer low-risk tumours than the current gold standard combination of targeted and systematic biopsies

    Dynamic and volumetric variables reliably predict fluid responsiveness in a porcine model with pleural effusion

    Background: The ability of stroke volume variation (SVV), pulse pressure variation (PPV) and global end-diastolic volume (GEDV) for prediction of fluid responsiveness in presence of pleural effusion is unknown. The aim of the present study was to challenge the ability of SVV, PPV and GEDV to predict fluid responsiveness in a porcine model with pleural effusions. Methods: Pigs were studied at baseline and after fluid loading with 8 ml kg−1 6% hydroxyethyl starch. After withdrawal of 8 ml kg−1 blood and induction of pleural effusion up to 50 ml kg−1 on either side, measurements at baseline and after fluid loading were repeated. Cardiac output, stroke volume, central venous pressure (CVP) and pulmonary occlusion pressure (PAOP) were obtained by pulmonary thermodilution, whereas GEDV was determined by transpulmonary thermodilution. SVV and PPV were monitored continuously by pulse contour analysis. Results: Pleural effusion was associated with significant changes in lung compliance, peak airway pressure and stroke volume in both responders and non-responders. At baseline, SVV, PPV and GEDV reliably predicted fluid responsiveness (area under the curve 0.85 (p<0.001), 0.88 (p<0.001), 0.77 (p = 0.007). After induction of pleural effusion the ability of SVV, PPV and GEDV to predict fluid responsiveness was well preserved and also PAOP was predictive. Threshold values for SVV and PPV increased in presence of pleural effusion. Conclusions: In this porcine model, bilateral pleural effusion did not affect the ability of SVV, PPV and GEDV to predict fluid responsiveness

    Azimuthal asymmetries of charged hadrons produced by high-energy muons scattered off longitudinally polarised deuterons

    Azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of positive (h^+) and negative hadrons (h^-) have been measured by scattering 160 GeV muons off longitudinally polarised deuterons at CERN. The asymmetries were decomposed in several terms according to their expected modulation in the azimuthal angle phi of the outgoing hadron. Each term receives contributions from one or several spin and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. The amplitudes of all phi-modulation terms of the hadron asymmetries integrated over the kinematic variables are found to be consistent with zero within statistical errors, while the constant terms are nonzero and equal for h^+ and h^- within the statistical errors. The dependencies of the phi-modulated terms versus the Bjorken momentum fraction x, the hadron fractional momentum z, and the hadron transverse momentum p_h^T were studied. The x dependence of the constant terms for both positive and negative hadrons is in agreement with the longitudinal double-spin hadron asymmetries, measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. The x dependence of the sin phi-modulation term is less pronounced than that in the corresponding HERMES data.
