    Role of Direct Aging and Solution Treatment on Hardness, Microstructure and Residual Stress of the A357 (AlSi7Mg0.6) Alloy Produced by Powder Bed Fusion

    Applying additive manufacturing (AM) technologies to the fabrication of aluminum automotive components, with an optimized design, may result in improved vehicle light weighting. However, the post-process heat treatment of such alloys has to be customized for the particular AM microstructure. The present study is aimed at investigating the effect of different heat treatments on the microstructure, hardness and residual stress of the A357 (AlSi7Mg0.6) heat-treatable alloy produced by laser-based powder bed fusion (LPBF, also known as selective laser melting). There are two major issues to be addressed: (1) relieving the internal residual stress resulting from the process and (2) strengthening the alloy with a customized heat treatment. Therefore, stress-relief annealing treatment, direct aging of the as-built alloy and a redesigned T6 treatment (consisting of a shortened high-temperature solution treatment followed by artificial aging) were examined. Comparable hardness values were reached in the LPBF alloy with optimized direct aging and T6 treatments, but complete relief of the residual stress was obtained only with T6. Microstructural analyses also suggested that, because of the supersaturated solid solution, different phenomena were involved in direct aging and T6 treatment

    The best evidence for establishing the level of eutrophy of a water-body is its algal production which makes it possible to identify the type and the intensity of the eutrophication according to the kind and number of algal species present: when the number of algae exceeds half a million per litre then one speaks o an ”algal bloom”. The scope of the present research aims to verify if the alga Selenastrum capricornutum can be used as a test alga under our culture conditions and to determine the eutrophic level of the secondary effluent of a modern plant for the treatment of domestic discharge and to investigate the eventual ”limiting factors”. Finally this paper aims to study the effect on the secondary effluent of tertiary treatment carried out artificially in the laboratory

With a brief review of the literature we discuss the absence of any identified cause of pleurisy as a relatively common condition, requiring attention and clinical awareness

    Solar UV-B Radiation Influences Carotenoid Accumulation of Tomato Fruit through Both Ethylene-Dependent and -independent Mechanisms

    The effect of UV-B shielding on ethylene production in ripening tomato fruits and the contribution of ethylene and UV-B radiation on carotenoid accumulation and profile during ripening were assessed to get more insight about the interplay between these two regulatory factors. To this aim, rin and nor tomato mutants, unable to produce ripening ethylene, and cv Ailsa Craig were cultivated under control or UV-B depleted conditions until full fruit ripening. The significantly decreased ethylene evolution following UV-B depletion, evident only in Ailsa Craig, suggested the requirement of functional rin and nor genes for UVB-mediated ethylene production. Carotenoid content and profile were found to be controlled by both ethylene and UV-B radiation. This latter influenced carotenoid metabolism either in an ethylene-dependent or -independent way, as indicated by UVB-induced changes also in nor and rin carotenoid content and confirmed by correlation plots between ethylene evolution and carotenoid accumulation performed separately for control and UV-B shielded fruits. In conclusion, natural UV-B radiation influences carotenoid metabolism in a rather complex way, involving ethylene-dependent and -independent mechanisms, which seem to act in an antagonistic way

    Comparing Mobile Laser Scanner and manual measurements for dendrometric variables estimation in a black pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) plantation

    The growing demand of ecosystem services provided by forests increased the need for fast and accurate field survey. The recent technological innovations fostered the application of geomatic tools and processes to different fields of the forestry sector. In this study we compared the efficiency and the accuracy of Mobile Laser Scanner (MLS), combined with Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technology, and traditional field survey for the mensuration of main forest dendrometric variables like stem diameter at breast height (DBH), individual tree height (H), crown base height (CBH) and branch-free stem volume (VOL). With ground truth measurements taken from 50 felled trees, we tested the applicability of MLS technology for individual tree parameters esti-mation in a conifer plantation in central Italy. Our results showed no bias of DBH estimates and the corre-sponding RMSE was equal to 10.8% (2.7 cm). H and CBH measured with MLS were underestimated compared to the ground truth (bias of-8.6% for H and-13.3% for CBH). VOL values showed a bias and a RMSE of-4.1% (-0.01 m(3)) and 12.4% (0.04 m3) respectively. Tree height is not perfectly estimated due to laser obstruction by crowns layer, but the acquisition speed of this survey, joined with a suitable accuracy of parameters extraction, suggests sufficient suitability of the method for operational applications in simple forest structures (e.g. one-layered stands)

    Changes in clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients admitted to inpatient cardiac rehabilitation

    Aims: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) have proven to be effective and beneficial in middle-aged and older patients. However, solid data in large cohorts of elderly individuals are yet to be explored. This retrospective study investigated the general characteristics, outcomes, and the level of re-sponse of patients referred to CR over 13 consecutive years. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of patients admitted to Villa Pineta Rehabilitation Hospital for exercise-based CR from 2006 to 2018. Patients’ baseline characteristics and changes following CR in upper limb weight-lifting test (ULW), 30-second sit-to-stand test (30STS), and the 6-minute walking test (6MWT) with associated Borg-related dyspnea (D) and fatigue (F) were collected. We also calculated the number of individuals reaching the minimal clinically relevant change (MCRC) following CR for each outcome. Results: 1551 patients (70.2 ± 9.7 years, 66% men) with complete data set were in-cluded in the analysis. Coronary artery bypass graft and cardiac valve replacement surgery were the most frequent surgical procedures leading to CR referral (41.1% and 35.8%, respectively). The patients’ age (p = 0.03), number of total comorbidities (p < 0.0001), and post-surgical complica-tions (p = 0.02) significantly increased over time. In contrast, the average absolute changes in ULW, 30STS and 6MWT with associated D and F, and the proportion of patients reaching the re-spective MCRC, remained constant over the same period. Conclusion: Patients admitted to exer-cise-based CR were older and had more comorbidities and complications over time. Outcomes, however, were not influenced in terms of absolute change nor clinically meaningful response

    Primary carcinoid tumour of the common bile duct

    Background Carcinoid tumours of the extrahepatic biliary tree are exceedingly rare. We report a case of primary carcinoid tumour arising in the distal portion of the common bile duct. Case outline A 30-year-old man was admitted with watery diarrhoea and symptoms of biliary obstruction. Abdominal ultrasound scan showed a normal gallbladder without stones, mild dilatation of the intra- and extrahepatic biliary tree and a 2 cm solid lesion in the head of pancreas compressing the distal common bile duct. Computed tomography confirmed these findings and showed that the tumour was hypervascular. Gastrointestinal hormone screening showed an increase in plasma serotonin. The patient underwent a standard pylorus-preserving proximal pancreatoduodenectomy (PPPD). Results Pathological examination showed a neuroendocrine tumour (carcinoid) of the distal bile duct. The postoperative plasma serotonin decreased to normal levels. One year later the patient is well without evidence of disease. Discussion Primary carcinoid tumours of the extrahepatic biliary tree are rare, accounting for 0.2–2% of all digestive carcinoids. This is the fifth report of a tumour arising from the distal common bile duct. Surgical treatment for neoplasms of the distal common bile duct can be problematic because of the site of the lesion and the difficulty in differentiating them from periampullary neoplasms lesions. Pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) is therefore the treatment of choice
