Synthesis of extracellular matrix components by human ciliary muscle cells in culture
The production and spatial organization of connective tissue components in ciliary muscle cell cultures was studied with immunohistochemical and ultrastructural methods. Antibodies against collagen types IV and VI, fibronectin and laminin were used. Laminin stains as pericellular network surrounding individual muscle cells. Type IV collagen shows positive cytoplasmic staining and only small foci of extracellular immunofluorescence. Staining for type VI collagen and fibronectin is seen near the ends of the bipolar cells, while the lateral sides of the cells remain unstained. Electronmicroscopy shows that cultured ciliary muscle cells are surrounded by an incomplete basal lamina. In addition, bundles of 5-20 nm thick extracellular microfibrils are seen. The bundles are oriented parallel to the axis of the cells and are in close contact with the cell membrane in areas where membrane-bound dense bands are formed. Immunoelectronmicroscopy indicates that the bundles contain fibronectin and type VI collagen fibrils. While the fibronectin fibrils approach the cell membrane directly, type VI collagen fibrils are usually separated from the cell membrane by fine fibrillous material of different nature. Quality and spatial organization of the extracellular material in ciliary muscle cell cultures shows marked similarities with the extracellular matrix of ciliary muscle in situ
Hadron collider limits on anomalous couplings
A next-to-leading log calculation of the reactions and
is presented including a tri-boson
gauge coupling from non-Standard Model contributions. Two approaches are made
for comparison. The first approach considers the tri-boson coupling
as being uniquely fixed by tree level unitarity at high energies to its
Standard Model form and, consequently, suppresses the non-Standard Model
contributions with form factors. The second approach is to ignore such
considerations and calculate the contributions to non-Standard Model tri-boson
gauge couplings without such suppressions. It is found that at Tevatron
energies, the two approaches do not differ much in quantitative results, while
at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies the two approaches give significantly
different predictions for production rates. At the Tevatron and LHC, however,
the sensitivity limits on the anomalous coupling of are too weak to
usefully constrain parameters in effective Lagrangian models.Comment: Revtex 23 pages + 8 figures, UIOWA-94-1
Searching for t-bar t Resonances at the Large Hadron Collider
Many new physics models predict resonances with masses in the TeV range which
decay into a pair of top quarks. With its large cross section, t-bar t
production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) offers an excellent opportunity
to search for such particles. We present a detailed study of the discovery
potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider for Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations
of the gluon in bulk Randall-Sundrum (RS) models in the t-bar t -> ell^+/- nu
b-bar bq-bar q' (ell=e, mu) final state. We utilize final states with one or
two tagged b-quarks, and two, three or four jets (including b-jets). Our
calculations take into account the finite resolution of detectors, the energy
loss due to b-quark decays, the expected reduced b-tagging efficiency at large
t-bar t invariant masses, and include the background originating from Wb-bar
b+jets, (Wb+W-bar b)+jets, W+jets, and single top + jets production. We derive
semi-realistic 5 sigma discovery limits for nine different KK gluon scenarios,
and compare them with those for KK gravitons, and a Z_H boson in the Littlest
Higgs model. We also analyze the capabilities of the LHC experiments to
differentiate between individual KK gluon models and measure the couplings of
KK gluons to quarks. We find that, for the parameters and models chosen, KK
gluons with masses up to about 4 TeV can be discovered at the LHC. The ability
of the LHC to discriminate between different bulk RS models, and to measure the
couplings of the KK gluons is found to be highly model dependent.Comment: revtex3, 27 pages, 5 tables, 6 figure
Influence of Charge Order on the Ground States of TMTTF Molecular Salts
(TMTTF)2AsF6 and (TMTTF)2SbF6 are both known to undergo a charge ordering
phase transition, though their ground states are different. The ground state of
the first is Spin-Peierls, and the second is an antiferromagnet. We study the
effect of pressure on the ground states and the charge-ordering using 13C NMR
spectroscopy. The experiments demonstrate that the the CO and SP order
parameters are repulsive, and consequently the AF state is stabilized when the
CO order parameter is large, as it is for (TMTTF)2SbF6. An extension of the
well-known temperature/pressure phase diagram is proposed.Comment: 5pages, 5 figures, Proceeding of ISCOM2003, to appear in Journal de

Logarithmic electroweak corrections to gauge-boson pair production at the LHC
We have studied the effects of the complete logarithmic electroweak O(alpha)
corrections on the production of vector-boson pairs WZ, ZZ, and WW at the LHC.
These corrections are implemented into a Monte Carlo program for pp -> 4f
(+\gamma) with final states involving four or two leptons using the double-pole
approximation. We numerically investigate purely leptonic final states and find
that electroweak corrections lower the predictions by 5-30% in the physically
interesting region of large di-boson invariant mass and large angle of the
produced vector bosons.Comment: 47 pages, LaTeX, 18 eps figure
Vector Boson Pair Production in Hadronic Collisions at Order : Lepton Correlations and Anomalous Couplings
We present cross sections for production of electroweak vector boson pairs,
, and , in and collisions, at next-to-leading
order in . We treat the leptonic decays of the bosons in the
narrow-width approximation, but retain all spin information via decay angle
correlations. We also include the effects of and anomalous
couplings.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, 3 table
Electroweak-correction effects in gauge-boson pair production at the LHC
We have studied the effect of one-loop logarithmic electroweak radiative
corrections on WZ and production processes at the LHC. We present
analytical results for the leading-logarithmic electroweak corrections to the
corresponding partonic processes du -> WZ, Wgamma. Using the leading-pole
approximation we implement these corrections into Monte Carlo programs for
. We find that electroweak corrections
lower the predictions by 5-20% in the physically interesting region of large
transverse momentum and small rapidity separation of the gauge bosons.Comment: 28 pages, LaTex, 13 eps figures included; references added and

Prompt photon hadroproduction at high energies in the k_T-factorization approach
We consider the prompt photon production at high energy hadron colliders in
the framework of k_T-factorization approach. The unintegrated quark and gluon
distributions in a proton are determined using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin
prescription. The conservative error analisys is performed. We investigate both
inclusive prompt photon and prompt photon and associated muon production rates.
In Standard Model such events come mainly due to Compton scattering process
where the final heavy (charm or bottom) quark produces a muon. The theoretical
results are compared with recent experimental data taken by the D0 and CDF
collaborations at Fermilab Tevatron. Our analysis also covers the azimuthal
correlations between produced prompt photon and muon which can provide an
important information about non-collinear parton evolution in a proton.
Finally, we extrapolate the theoretical predictions to CERN LHC energies.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figure
Events with Isolated Charged Leptons and Large Missing Transverse Momentum at HERA
Striking events with isolated charged leptons, large missing transverse
momentum and large transverse momentum of the hadronic final state were
observed at the electron proton collider HERA in a data sample corresponding to
a luminosity of about 130 pb-1. The H1 collaboration observed 11 events with
isolated electrons or muons and with transverse momentum above 25 GeV. Only
3.4+-0.6 events were expected from Standard Model (SM) processes. Six of these
events have a transverse momentum of greater than 40 GeV, while 1.3+-0.3 events
were expected. The ZEUS collaboration observed good agreement with the SM.
However, ZEUS found two events with a similar event topology, but tau leptons
instead of electrons or muons in the final state. Only 0.2+-0.05 events were
expected from SM processes. For various hypotheses the compatibility of the
experimental results was investigated with respect to the SM and with respect
to possible explanations beyond the SM. Prospects for the high-luminosity
HERA-II data taking period are given
Photon-Photon and Pomeron-Pomeron Processes in Peripheral Heavy Ion Collisions
We estimate the cross sections for the production of resonances, pion pairs
and a central cluster of hadrons in peripheral heavy-ion collisions through
two-photon and double-pomeron exchange, at energies that will be available at
RHIC and LHC. The effect of the impact parameter in the diffractive reactions
is introduced, and imposing the condition for realistic peripheral collisions
we verify that in the case of very heavy ions the pomeron-pomeron contribution
is indeed smaller than the electromagnetic one. However, they give a
non-negligible background in the collision of light ions. This diffractive
background will be more important at RHIC than at LHC.Comment: 22 pages, 1 Postscript figures, 4 tables, to appear in Phys. Rev.
