Hyperelastic cloaking theory: Transformation elasticity with pre-stressed solids
Transformation elasticity, by analogy with transformation acoustics and
optics, converts material domains without altering wave properties, thereby
enabling cloaking and related effects. By noting the similarity between
transformation elasticity and the theory of incremental motion superimposed on
finite pre-strain it is shown that the constitutive parameters of
transformation elasticity correspond to the density and moduli of
small-on-large theory. The formal equivalence indicates that transformation
elasticity can be achieved by selecting a particular finite (hyperelastic)
strain energy function, which for isotropic elasticity is semilinear strain
energy. The associated elastic transformation is restricted by the requirement
of statically equilibrated pre-stress. This constraint can be cast as \tr
{\mathbf F} = constant, where is the deformation gradient,
subject to symmetry constraints, and its consequences are explored both
analytically and through numerical examples of cloaking of anti-plane and

Can self-report questionnaires create illness cognitions in middle-aged men?
Objective: To examine the effect of questionnaire context on self-reported illness cognition.
Design: A single-item measure of the perceived impact of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) was embedded twice in a questionnaire battery completed by community-dwelling middle-aged males (N = 1,790). The impact measure was placed in two distinct questionnaire contexts; at the end of a general somatic symptoms questionnaire, and following an illness-specific symptoms questionnaire. The order of the two questionnaire contexts was counter-balanced in a random sub-sample.
Main Outcome Measures: An established single-item measure of the perceived impact of LUTS.
Results: Concordance between the two single-item measures was moderate. Scores on a single-item measure of impact were significantly lower when assessed immediately following the completion of a LUTS-specific questionnaire than when assessed following the completion of a general symptoms questionnaire. There was no evidence of order effects. The observed effect was moderated by the severity of LUTS such that the difference in perceived impact scores between contexts (where general symptoms context > illness-specific context) increased as urinary symptoms increased.
Conclusion: Questionnaire context systematically influenced responses on self-report measures of illness impact. The magnitude of the context effect was largest in the highest quintile of LUTS severity, a difference of >0.5 on a scale with a range of 3. These findings may have implications for situations where patient reported outcome measures are used to evaluate healthcare interventions or inform treatment decisions
The Cauchy problem for a class of two-dimensional nonlocal nonlinear wave equations governing anti-plane shear motions in elastic materials
This paper is concerned with the analysis of the Cauchy problem of a general
class of two-dimensional nonlinear nonlocal wave equations governing anti-plane
shear motions in nonlocal elasticity. The nonlocal nature of the problem is
reflected by a convolution integral in the space variables. The Fourier
transform of the convolution kernel is nonnegative and satisfies a certain
growth condition at infinity. For initial data in Sobolev spaces,
conditions for global existence or finite time blow-up of the solutions of the

Elastic cavitation, tube hollowing, and differential growth in plants and biological tissues
Elastic cavitation is a well-known physical process by which elastic materials under stress can open cavities. Usually, cavitation is induced by applied loads on the elastic body. However, growing materials may generate stresses in the absence of applied loads and could induce cavity opening. Here, we demonstrate the possibility of spontaneous growth-induced cavitation in elastic materials and consider the implications of this phenomenon to biological tissues and in particular to the problem of schizogenous aerenchyma formation
Keys to successful balanced scorecard implementation and use based on published implementation attempts
In recent years many companies have evolved from being centrally located and managed to decentralized, multi-national companies consisting of many separate entities to be strategically managed. In response to this and other changes, such as the need for better measurement of performance, a strategic management tool was developed called the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). This research provides a tool to guide and evaluate BSC implementation. A meta-synthesis approach was used to examine qualitative BSC data available in the literature that suggested eleven keys to successful BSC implementation and use. These keys are then used to benchmark an implementation in a government logistics organization
