The ATLAS magnet test facility at CERN

    Get PDF
The magnet system for the ATLAS detector at CERN consists of a Barrel Toroid (BT), two End-Cap Toroids (ECT) and a Central Solenoid (CS). The overall dimensions of the system are 20 m in diameter by 26 m in length. Before underground installation all coils will be tested on surface in a magnet test facility which is under construction. Moreover two model coils are tested as well as subsystems. In this paper the design and construction of the test facility is presented. (3 refs)

ATLAS B0 toroid model coil test at CERN

The ATLAS superconducting magnet system consists of a Barrel Toroid, two End-Cap Toroids and a Central Solenoid. The Barrel Toroid, with overall dimensions of 20-m diameter by 26-m length, is made of eight individual coils symmetrically assembled around the central axis with a warm structure. The system is presently under construction in industry. In order to verify the construction concepts a model coil B0, a 9-m short version of a single Barrel Toroid coil, was built. Since April 2001, an extensive test program is underway at CERN to characterize the mechanical, thermal, electrical and magnetic properties of the coil. The magnet successfully achieved the 20-kA nominal operating current in July 2001. The test program and the main results are reported. (9 refs)

Mechanical behavior of the ATLAS B0 model coil

    Get PDF
The ATLAS B0 model coil has been developed and constructed to verify the design parameters and the manufacture techniques of the Barrel Toroid coils (BT) that are under construction for the ATLAS Detector. Essential for successful operation is the mechanical behavior of the superconducting coil and its support structure. In the ATLAS magnet test facility, a magnetic mirror is used to reproduce in the model coil the electromagnetic forces of the BT coils when assembled in the final Barrel Toroid magnet system. The model coil is extensively equipped with mechanical instrumentation to monitor stresses and force levels as well as contraction during a cooling down and excitation up to nominal current. The installed set up of strain gauges, position sensors and capacitive force transducers is presented. Moreover the first mechanical results in terms of expected main stress, strain and deformation values are presented based on detailed mechanical analysis of the design. (7 refs)

Spin Structure of the Proton from Polarized Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Muon-Proton Scattering

We have measured the spin-dependent structure function g1pg_1^p in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons, in the kinematic range 0.003<x<0.70.003 < x < 0.7 and 1GeV2<Q2<60GeV21 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 60 GeV^2. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is used to evolve the measured g1p(x,Q2)g_1^p(x,Q^2) to a fixed Q02Q^2_0. The first moment of g1pg_1^p at Q02=10GeV2Q^2_0 = 10 GeV^2 is Γp=0.136±0.013(stat.)±0.009(syst.)±0.005(evol.)\Gamma^p = 0.136\pm 0.013(stat.) \pm 0.009(syst.)\pm 0.005(evol.). This result is below the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule by more than two standard deviations. The singlet axial charge a0a_0 is found to be 0.28±0.160.28 \pm 0.16. In the Adler-Bardeen factorization scheme, Δg2\Delta g \simeq 2 is required to bring ΔΣ\Delta \Sigma in agreement with the Quark-Parton Model. A combined analysis of all available proton and deuteron data confirms the Bjorken sum rule.Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures, uses ReVTex and smc.sty. submitted to Physical Review

The protection system of the superconducting coils in the Barrel Toroid of ATLAS

    No full text
An analysis of the discharge of the Barrel Toroid under several operating conditions has been carried out. The main critical parameters of the discharge (i.e. the maximum temperature inside the coils, the maximum temperature 9gradient,themaximumvoltageatthecoilendsandthemaximumdecenteringforcesactingontheBTandECTmagnets)havebeencalculatedforseveraloperatingconditions(heaterson,heatersoff,shortcircuitwithheatersonor9 gradient, the maximum voltage at the coil ends and the maximum decentering forces acting on the BT and ECT magnets) have been calculated for several operating conditions (heaters on, heaters off, short circuit with heaters on or 9 off). The aim of this analysis is to provide a cross check of the protection design of the Barrel Toroid coils with an independent study. The results validate the choice to use a low value of dump resistance, and give some important $9 warning in the case of heater failure or presence of a short circuit. (5 refs)
