Equilibrium and eigenfunctions estimates in the semi-classical regime
We establish eigenfunctions estimates, in the semi-classical regime, for
critical energy levels associated to an isolated singularity. For Schr\"odinger
operators, the asymptotic repartition of eigenvectors is the same as in the
regular case, excepted in dimension 1 where a concentration at the critical
point occurs. This principle extends to pseudo-differential operators and the
limit measure is the Liouville measure as long as the singularity remains

Atypical hepatic vacuolated cell lesion in the white perch \u3cem\u3eMorone americana\u3c/em\u3e
This report details histopathological findings of atypical vacuolated hepatocytes in the white perch Morone americana. Vacuolated cell lesions have been reported from a number of species in association with degraded habitats, often in the presence of hepatic neoplasms. Extensive atypical vacuolated cell lesions assuming characteristic acinar or ductular configurations have been reported previously only from the winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus. Light microscopic findings, utilizing a variety of histochemical stains, suggest the identical nature of this lesion to that of winter flounder. The discovery of this lesion in a free-swimming species, feeding throughout the water column, is in direct contrast to that of the bottom dwelling pleuronectid, feeding from and constantly in contact with potentially contaminated sediments. While the winter flounder has become the sentinel fish species for pollution monitoring on the northeast coast, increased surveillance of other species may prove atypical vacuolated cell lesions represent a common mechanism of chronic cellular injury in relation to impacted environments
Spectral fluctuations of Schr\"odinger operators generated by critical points of the potential
Starting from the spectrum of Schr\"odinger operators on , we
propose a method to detect critical points of the potential. We argue
semi-classically on the basis of a mathematically rigorous version of
Gutzwiller's trace formula which expresses spectral statistics in term of
classical orbits. A critical point of the potential with zero momentum is an
equilibrium of the flow and generates certain singularities in the spectrum.
Via sharp spectral estimates, this fluctuation indicates the presence of a
critical point and allows to reconstruct partially the local shape of the
potential. Some generalizations of this approach are also proposed.\medskip

High temporal variability in the occurrence of consumer-resource interactions in ecological networks
Ecological networks are theoretical abstractions that represent ecological
communities. These networks are usually defined as static entities, in which
the occurrence of a particular interaction between species is considered fixed
despite the intrinsic dynamics of ecological systems. However, empirical
analysis of the temporal variation of trophic interactions is constrained by
the lack of data with high spatial, temporal, and taxonomic resolution. Here,
we evaluate the spatiotemporal variability of multiple consumer-resource
interactions of large marine networks. The tropic interactions of all of the
analyzed networks had low temporal persistence, which was well described by a
common exponential decay in the rank-frequency relationship of
consumer-resource interactions. This common pattern of low temporal persistence
was evident despite the dissimilarities of environmental conditions among
sites. Between-site rank correlations of frequency of occurrence of
interactions ranged from 0.59 to 0.73. After removing the interactions with
<50% frequency, the between-site correlations decreased to values between 0.60
and 0.28, indicating that low-frequency interactions accounted for the apparent
similarities between sites. Our results showed that the communities studied
were characterized by few persistent interactions and a large number of
transient trophic interactions. We suggest that consumer-resource temporal
asynchrony in addition to varying local environmental conditions and
opportunistic foraging could be among the mechanisms generating the observed
rank-frequency relationship of trophic interactions. Therefore, our results
question the analysis of ecological communities as static and persistent
natural entities and stress the need for strengthening the analysis of temporal
variability in ecological networks and long-term studies.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure
A novel polymorphism of resistin gene and its association with meat quality traits in Chinese Bos taurus
Searching for candidate gene polymorphisms and their relationship with meat quality traits is an important issue for Bos taurus industry. In this study, we evaluated polymorphism of resistin (RETN) gene involved in energy metabolism. Using the polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) technology, a novel missense substitution single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) g.2528T>C was identified in the exon 2 region of the RETN gene. Allele frequencies, gene heterozygosity, effective allele number and polymorphism information content of the bovine RETN SNP in six populations were investigated and calculated by the χ2 test. The distribution of the polymorphism from the studied six B. taurus breeds was not uniform. Our results suggested that Qinchuan, Luxi and Luxi × Simmental were not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Moreover, the polymorphism and its association with meat quality traits were analyzed in 369 Qinchuan and 73 Nanyang individuals. The analyzed SNP in the RETN revealed a significant association with marbling and intramuscular fat (p < 0.05). We observed that TT genotype was associated with a heightened marbling score when compared with the TC and CC in Qinchuan and Nanyang breeds. In Qinchuan breed, we also found that TT genotype was associated with an increased intramuscular fat content when compared with the TC. Such associations were not observed on backfat thickness, loin-muscle area and loin-muscle depth. ISM conditions in z~0.2 Lyman-Break Analogs
We present an analysis of far--infrared (FIR) [CII] and [OI] fine structure
line and continuum observations obtained with /PACS, and CO(1-0)
observations obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer, of Lyman
Break Analogs (LBAs) at . The principal aim of this work is to
determine the typical ISM properties of Main Sequence (MS)
galaxies, with stellar masses between and ,
which are currently not easily detectable in all these lines even with ALMA and
NOEMA. We perform PDR modeling and apply different IR diagnostics to derive the
main physical parameters of the FIR emitting gas and dust and we compare the
derived ISM properties to those of galaxies on and above the MS at different
redshifts. We find that the ISM properties of LBAs are quite extreme (low gas
temperature, high density and thermal pressure) with respect to those found in
local normal spirals and more active local galaxies. LBAs have no [CII] deficit
despite having the high specific star formation rates (sSFRs) typical of
starbursts. Although LBAs lie above the local MS, we show that their ISM
properties are more similar to those of high-redshift MS galaxies than of local
galaxies above the main sequence. This data set represents an important
reference for planning future ALMA [CII] observations of relatively low-mass MS

Politics in the Classroom
Nursing and midwifery is, in the UK, regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Regulatory duties include establishing standards for education, and from January 2019, new educational programmes will be approved against standards detailed in the document Future nurse: Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (NMC, 2019 – hereafter ‘the standards’). This publication lists “the knowledge and skills that registered nurses must demonstrate when caring for people” (ibid, p.3); and from September 2020, registration (licence) will require the successful completion of programmes that have been ratified against these standards. The importance of this document in a UK context cannot be understated. However, less parochially, learning outcomes contained in section 7 of the standards raise questions that require educator attention whenever politically sensitive topics (broadly conceived) are discussed. This study explores these questions insofar as they relate to the stance (neutrality or partisanship) that educators adopt in politicised discussion, and the management of student speech/expression. The Diabolo photometer and the future of ground-based millimetric bolometer devices
The millimetric atmospheric windows at 1 and 2 mm are interesting targets for
cosmological studies. Two broad areas appear leading this field: 1) the search
for high redshift star-forming galaxies and 2) the measurement of
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in clusters of galaxies at all redshifts. The
Diabolo photometer is a dual-channel photometer working at 1.2 and 2.1 mm and
dedicated to high angular resolution measurements of the Sunyaev--Zel'dovich
effect towards distant clusters. It uses 2 by 3 bolometers cooled down to 0.1 K
with a compact open dilution cryostat. The high resolution is provided by the
IRAM 30 m telescope. The result of several Winter campaigns are reported here,
including the first millimetric map of the SZ effect that was obtained by
Pointecouteau et al. (2001) on RXJ1347-1145, the non-detection of a millimetric
counterpart to the radio decrement towards PC1643+4631 and 2 mm number count
upper limits. We discuss limitations in ground-based single-dish millimetre
observations, namely sky noise and the number of detectors. We advocate the use
of fully sampled arrays of (100 to 1000) bolometers as a big step forward in
