A new design for the CERN-Fr\'ejus neutrino Super Beam
We present an optimization of the hadron focusing system for a low-energy
high-intensity conventional neutrino beam (Super-Beam) proposed on the basis of
the HP-SPL at CERN with a beam power of 4 MW and an energy of 4.5 GeV. The far
detector would be a 440 kton Water Cherenkov detector (MEMPHYS) located at a
baseline of 130 km in the Fr\'ejus site. The neutrino fluxes simulation relies
on a new GEANT4 based simulation coupled with an optimization algorithm based
on the maximization of the sensitivity limit on the mixing angle.
A new configuration adopting a multiple horn system with solid targets is
proposed which improves the sensitivity to and the CP violating
phase .Comment: 11 pages, 18 figures, 2 table
Observing quantum state diffusion by heterodyne detection of fluorescence
A qubit can relax by fluorescence, which prompts the release of a photon into
its electromagnetic environment. By counting the emitted photons, discrete
quantum jumps of the qubit state can be observed. The succession of states
occupied by the qubit in a single experiment, its quantum trajectory, depends
in fact on the kind of detector. How are the quantum trajectories modified if
one measures continuously the amplitude of the fluorescence field instead?
Using a superconducting parametric amplifier, we have performed heterodyne
detection of the fluorescence of a superconducting qubit. For each realization
of the measurement record, we can reconstruct a different quantum trajectory
for the qubit. The observed evolution obeys quantum state diffusion, which is
characteristic of quantum measurements subject to zero point fluctuations.
Independent projective measurements of the qubit at various times provide a
quantitative validation of the reconstructed trajectories. By exploring the
statistics of quantum trajectories, we demonstrate that the qubit states span a
deterministic surface in the Bloch sphere at each time in the evolution.
Additionally, we show that when monitoring fluorescence, coherent
superpositions are generated during the decay from excited to ground state.
Counterintuitively, measuring light emitted during relaxation can give rise to
trajectories with increased excitation probability.Comment: Supplementary material can be found in the ancillary sectio
Resolving Octant Degeneracy at LBL experiment by combining Daya Bay Reactor Setup
Long baseline Experiment (LBL) have promised to be a very powerful
experimental set up to study various issues related to Neutrinos. Some ongoing
and planned LBL and medium baseline experiments are - T2K, MINOS, NOvA, LBNE,
LBNO etc. But the long baseline experiments are crippled due to presence of
some parameter degeneracies, like the Octant degeneracy. In this work, we first
show the presence of Octant degeneracy in LBL experiments, and then combine it
with Daya Bay Reactor experiment, at different values of CP violation phase. We
show that the Octant degeneracy in LBNE can be resolved completely with this
proposal.Comment: 4 pages, 8 figure
Using Spontaneous Emission of a Qubit as a Resource for Feedback Control
Persistent control of a transmon qubit is performed by a feedback protocol
based on continuous heterodyne measurement of its fluorescence. By driving the
qubit and cavity with microwave signals whose amplitudes depend linearly on the
instantaneous values of the quadratures of the measured fluorescence field, we
show that it is possible to stabilize permanently the qubit in any targeted
state. Using a Josephson mixer as a phase-preserving amplifier, it was possible
to reach a total measurement efficiency =35%, leading to a maximum of 59%
of excitation and 44% of coherence for the stabilized states. The experiment
demonstrates multiple-input multiple-output analog Markovian feedback in the
quantum regime.Comment: Supplementary material can be found as an ancillary objec
Determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy in the regime of small matter effect
We point out a synergy between T-conjugated oscillation channels in the
determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy with oscillation experiments with
relatively short baselines (L < 700 km), where the matter effect is small. If
information from all four oscillation channels ,
, and is
available, a matter effect of few percent suffices to break the sign-degeneracy
and allows to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. The effect is discussed by
analytical considerations of the relevant oscillation probabilities, and
illustrated with numerical simulations of realistic experimental setups.
Possible configurations where this method could be applied are the combination
of a super beam experiment with a beta beam or a neutrino factory, or a (low
energy) neutrino factory using a detector with muon and electron charge
identification.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
MEMPHYS:A large scale water Cerenkov detector at Fr\'ejus
A water \v{C}erenkov detector project, of megaton scale, to be installed in
the Fr\'ejus underground site and dedicated to nucleon decay, neutrinos from
supernovae, solar and atmospheric neutrinos, as well as neutrinos from a
super-beam and/or a beta-beam coming from CERN, is presented and compared with
competitor projects in Japan and in the USA. The performances of the European
project are discussed, including the possibility to measure the mixing angle
and the CP-violating phase .Comment: 1+33 pages, 14 figures, Expression of Interest of MEMPHYS projec
Influence of Workload on Auditory Evoked Potentials in a Single-stimulus Paradigm
Mental workload can be assessed via neurophysiological markers. Temporal features such as event related potentials (ERPs) are one of those which are very often described in the literature. However, most of the studies that evaluate their sensitivity to workload use secondary tasks. Yet potentials elicited by ignored stimuli could provide mental state monitoring systems with less intrusive probing methods. For instance, auditory probing systems could be used in adaptive driving or e-learning applications. This study evaluates how workload influences auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) elicited by a single-stimulus paradigm when probes are to be ignored. Ten participants performed a Sternberg memory task on a touchpad with three levels of difficulty plus a view-only condition. In addition, they performed two ecological tasks of their choice, one deemed easy (e.g. reading novels), and the other difficult (e.g. programming). AEPs were elicited thanks to pure tones presented during the memory task retention period, and during the whole extent of the external tasks. Performance and AEPs were recorded and analyzed. Participants’ accuracy decreased linearly with increasing workload, whereas the difference in amplitude between the P3 and its adjacent components, N2 and SW, increased. This reveals the relevance of this triphasic sequence for mental workload assessment
