Modelling the motion of a cell population in the extracellular matrix
The paper aims at describing the motion of cells in fibrous tissues taking into account of the interaction with the network fibers and among cells, of chemotaxis, and of contact guidance from network fibers. Both a kinetic model and its continuum limit are described
Modeling cell movement in anisotropic and heterogeneous network tissues
Cell motion and interaction with the extracellular matrix is studied deriving a kinetic model and considering its diffusive limit. The model takes into account of chemotactic and haptotactic effects, and obtains friction as a result of the interactions between cells and between cells and the fibrous environment. The evolution depends on the fibre distribution, as cells preferentially move along the fibre direction and tend to cleave and remodel the extracellular matrix when their direction of motion is not aligned with the fibre direction. Simulations are performed to describe the behavior of ensemble of cells under the action of a chemotactic field and in presence of heterogeneous and anisotropic fibre networks
On the Discrete Kinetic Theory for Active Particles. Modelling the Immune Competition
This paper deals with the application of the mathematical kinetic theory for active particles, with discrete activity states, to the modelling of the immune competition between immune and cancer cells. The first part of the paper deals with the assessment of the mathematical framework suitable for the derivation of the models. Two specific models are derived in the second part, while some simulations visualize the applicability of the model to the description of biological events characterizing the immune competition. A final critical outlines some research perspectives
Doping dependence of the lattice dynamics in Ba(FeCo)As studied by Raman spectroscopy
We report Raman scattering spectra of iron-pnictide superconductor
Ba(FeCo)As single crystals with varying cobalt content.
Upon cooling through the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition, we observe a
large splitting of the E in-plane phonon modes involving Fe and As
displacements. The splitting of the in-plane phonons at the transition is
strongly reduced upon doping and disappears for qualitatively
following the trend displayed by the Fe magnetic moment. The origin of the
splitting is discussed in terms of magnetic frustration inherent to
iron-pnictide systems and we argue that such enhanced splitting may be linked
to strong spin-phonon coupling.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

The symmetry of charge order in cuprates
Charge-ordered ground states permeate the phenomenology of 3d-based
transition metal oxides, and more generally represent a distinctive hallmark of
strongly-correlated states of matter. The recent discovery of charge order in
various cuprate families fueled new interest into the role played by this
incipient broken symmetry within the complex phase diagram of high-Tc
superconductors. Here we use resonant X-ray scattering to resolve the main
characteristics of the charge-modulated state in two cuprate families: Bi2201
and YBCO. We detect no signatures of spatial modulations along the nodal
direction in Bi2201, thus clarifying the inter-unit-cell momentum-structure of
charge order. We also resolve the intra-unit-cell symmetry of the charge
ordered state, which is revealed to be best represented by a bond-order with
modulated charges on the O-2p orbitals and a prominent d-wave character. These
results provide insights on the microscopic description of charge order in
cuprates, and on its origin and interplay with superconductivity.Comment: A high-resolution version with supplementary material can be found

A toy model of fractal glioma development under RF electric field treatment
A toy model for glioma treatment by a radio frequency electric field is
suggested. This low-intensity, intermediate-frequency alternating electric
field is known as the tumor-treating-field (TTF). In the framework of this
model the efficiency of this TTF is estimated, and the interplay between the
TTF and the migration-proliferation dichotomy of cancer cells is considered.
The model is based on a modification of a comb model for cancer cells, where
the migration-proliferation dichotomy becomes naturally apparent. Considering
glioma cancer as a fractal dielectric composite of cancer cells and normal
tissue cells, a new effective mechanism of glioma treatment is suggested in the
form of a giant enhancement of the TTF. This leads to the irreversible
electroporation that may be an effective non-invasive method of treating brain
cancer.Comment: Submitted for publication in European Physical Journal
Inelastic x-ray scattering investigations of lattice dynamics in SmFeAsOF superconductors
We report measurements of the phonon density of states as measured with
inelastic x-ray scattering in SmFeAsOF powders. An unexpected
strong renormalization of phonon branches around 23 meV is observed as fluorine
is substituted for oxygen. Phonon dispersion measurements on
SmFeAsOF single crystals allow us to identify the 21 meV A
in-phase (Sm,As) and the 26 meV B (Fe,O) modes to be responsible for
this renormalization, and may reveal unusual electron-phonon coupling through
the spin channel in iron-based superconductors.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted for SNS2010 conference proceeding
