    Cutting load capacity of end mills with complex geometry

    Cutting load capacity of cemented carbide end mills with high length-to-diameter ratios is determined from critical geometric and loading parameters, including a stress concentration factor (SCF) to account for serrated edges, which is determined by finite element analysis. Tensile strengths are characterised using a statistical Weibull analysis from 4-point bend tests of cemented carbide blanks of two different diameters. The approach is used to predict probability of survival for cutters under different loading conditions. Results are compared to measured failure cutting loads under service conditions as well as to those measured in static three point bend tests

    A Modeling approach for analysis and improvement of spindle-holder-tool assembly dynamics

    The most important information required for chatter stability analysis is the dynamics of the involved structures, i.e. the frequency response functions (FRFs) which are usually determined experimentally. In this study, the tool point FRF of a spindle-holder-tool assembly is analytically determined by using the receptance coupling and structural modification techniques. Timoshenko’s beam model is used for increased accuracy. The spindle is also modeled analytically with elastic supports representing the bearings. The mathematical model is used to determine the effects of different parameters on the tool point FRF and to identify contact dynamics from experimental measurements. The applications of the model are demonstrated and the predictions are verified experimentally

    Analytical modeling of spindle-tool dynamics on machine tools using Timoshenko beam model and receptance coupling for the prediction of tool point FRF

    Regenerative chatter is a well-known machining problem that results in unstable cutting process, poor surface quality and reduced material removal rate. This undesired self-excited vibration problem is one of the main obstacles in utilizing the total capacity of a machine tool in production. In order to obtain a chatter-free process on a machining center, stability diagrams can be used. Numerically or analytically, constructing the stability lobe diagram for a certain spindleholdertool combination implies knowing the system dynamics at the tool tip; i.e., the point frequency response function (FRF) that relates the dynamic displacement and force at that point. This study presents an analytical method that uses Timoshenko beam theory for calculating the tool point FRF of a given combination by using the receptance coupling and structural modication methods. The objective of the study is two fold. Firstly, it is aimed to develop a reliable mathematical model to predict tool point FRF in a machining center so that chatter stability analysis can be done, and secondly to make use of this model in studying the effects of individual bearing and contact parameters on tool point FRF so that better approaches can be found in predicting contact parameters from experimental measurements. The model can also be used to study the effects of several spindle, holder and tool parameters on chatter stability. In this paper, the mathematical model, as well as the details of obtaining the system component (spindle, holder and tool) dynamics and coupling them to obtain the tool point FRF are given. The model suggested is veried by comparing the natural frequencies of an example spindleholdertool assembly obtained from the model with those obtained from a nite element software

    Effect analysis of bearing and interface dynamics on tool point FRF for chatter stability in machine tools by using a new analytical model for spindle-tool assemblies

    Self-excited vibration of the tool, regenerative chatter, can be predicted and eliminated if the stability lobe diagram of the spindle–holder–tool assembly is known. Regardless of the approach being used, analytically or numerically, forming the stability lobe diagram of an assembly implies knowing the point frequency response function (FRF) in receptance form at the tool tip. In this paper, it is aimed to study the effects of spindle–holder and holder–tool interface dynamics, as well as the effects of individual bearings on the tool point FRF by using an analytical model recently developed by the authors for predicting the tool point FRF of spindle–holder–tool assemblies. It is observed that bearing dynamics control the rigid body modes of the assembly, whereas, spindle–holder interface dynamics mainly affects the first elastic mode, while holder–tool interface dynamics alters the second elastic mode. Individual bearing and interface translational stiffness and damping values control the natural frequency and the peak of their relevant modes, respectively. It is also observed that variations in the values of rotational contact parameters do not affect the resulting FRF considerably, from which it is concluded that rotational contact parameters of both interfaces are not as crucial as the translational ones and therefore average values can successfully be used to represent their effects. These observations are obtained for the bearing and interface parameters taken from recent literature, and will be valid for similar assemblies. Based on the effect analysis carried out, a systematic approach is suggested for identifying bearing and interface contact parameters from experimental measurements

    A Structured Blood Conservation Program in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery

    OBJECTIVE: The limitation of alternative transfusion practices in infants increases the benefits of blood conservation. We analyzed the efficacy of a structured program to reduce transfusions and transfusion-associated complications in cardiac surgery PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our pediatric surgery database was reviewed retrospectively, comparing outcomes from two different time periods, after the implementation of an effective blood conservation program beginning in March 2014. A total of 214 infants (8.1±3.4 months) who underwent biventricular repair utilizing CPB (Group 1 – Blood conservation) were studied in a 12-month period (March 2014-February 2015) after the implementation of the new program, and compared with 250 infants (7.91±3.2 months) (Group 2 – Control-No blood conservation) of the previous 12 – month period (March 2013-February 2014). RESULTS: The proportion of patients transfused with red blood cells was 75.2% (N=188) in control group and reduced by 16.4% in the study group (58.8% – 126 patients, p CONCLUSIONS: These findings, in addition to attendant risks and side effects of blood transfusion and the rising cost of safer blood products, justify blood conservation in pediatric cardiac operations. Circuit miniaturization, ultrafiltration, and reduced postoperative bleeding, presumably secondary to higher fibrinogen and other coagulation factor levels, contributed to this outcome

    A Cardiopulmonary Bypass Based Blood Management Strategy in Adult Cardiac Surgery

    BACKGROUND: Despite the recent introduction of a number of technical and pharmacologic blood conservation measures, bleeding and allogeneic transfusion remain persistent problems in open-heart surgical procedures. Efforts should be made to decrease or completely avoid transfusions to avoid these negative reactions. METHODS: Our coronary artery bypass grafting database was reviewed retrospectively and a total of 243 patients who underwent cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) were studied in a 12-month period (January-December 2016) after the implementation of the new program, and compared with 275 patients of the previous 12-month period.All the staff involved in the care of the patients were educated about the risks and benefits of blood transfusions and the new transfusion guidelines in a 45-min training. We revised our guidelines for transfusions based on the STS. A transfusion log was created. Reduction in IV fluid volume was targeted. CPB circuitry was redesigned to achieve significantly less prime volume. Results: The proportion of patients transfused with red blood cells was 56% (n =154) in the control group and reduced by 26.8% in the study group (29.2%; 71 patients; P \u3c .01). Blood transfusion rate (1.7 +./- 1/3.05 +./- 1 units), postoperative hemorrhage (545 +./- 50/ 775 +./- 55 mL), respiratory support duration (12.4 +./- 7/16.8 +./- 8 h) and ICU stay (2.2+./-1.1/ 3.5+./-1.2 days) were significantly better in the blood conservation group. Conclusion: These findings, in addition to risks and side effects of blood transfusion and the rising cost of safer blood products, justify blood conservation in adult cardiac operations

    Multipartite minimum uncertainty products

    In our previous work we have found a lower bound for the multipartite uncertainty product of the position and momentum observables over all separable states. In this work we are trying to minimize this uncertainty product over a broader class of states to find the fundamental limits imposed by nature on the observable quantites. We show that it is necessary to consider pure states only and find the infimum of the uncertainty product over a special class of pure states (states with spherically symmetric wave functions). It is shown that this infimum is not attained. We also explicitly construct a parametrized family of states that approaches the infimum by varying the parameter. Since the constructed states beat the lower bound for separable states, they are entangled. We thus show that there is a gap that separates the values of a simple measurable quantity for separable states from entangled ones and we also try to find the size of this gap.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

    Analytical and experimental investigation of rake contact and friction behavior in metal cutting

    In this study, the friction behavior in metal cutting operations is analyzed using a thermomechanical cutting process model that represents the contact on the rake face by sticking and sliding regions. The relationship between the sliding and the overall, i.e. apparent, friction coefficients are analyzed quantitatively, and verified experimentally. The sliding friction coefficient is identified for different workpiece-tool couples using cutting and non-cutting tests. In addition, the effect of the total, sticking and sliding contact lengths on the cutting mechanics is investigated. The effects of cutting conditions on the friction coefficients and contact lengths are analyzed. It is shown that the total contact length on the rake face is 3-5 times the feed rate. It is observed that the length of the sliding contact strongly depends on the cutting speed. For high cutting speeds the contact is mainly sliding whereas the sticking zone can be up to 30% of the total contact at low speeds. From the model predictions and measurements it can be concluded that the sticking contact length is less than 15% for most practical operations. Furthermore, it is also demonstrated that the true representation of the friction behavior in metal cutting operations should involve both sticking and sliding regions on the rake face for accurate predictions. Although the main findings of this study have been observed before, the main contribution of the current work is the quantitative analysis using an analytical model. Therefore, the results presented in this study can help to understand and model the friction in metal cutting

    This paper is presentation of the development of advanced approach for modeling and structural analysis of jib structure which is usually part of waterway bucket dredgers. Object of analysis is a jib structure which will be reconstructed for the excavation of grain material from a river bed. Main goal of paper is to proof benefits of enough sophisticated i.e. “optimal” FEM model for structural analysis of this type of structures in comparison with simple, but not adequate models. Proper stress state is emphasized as primary, but not only condition. It is necessary to reach serviceability and durability state, as well as affordable financial construction circumstances.Rad je kratki prikaz razvitka naprednog pristupa u modeliranju i strukturnoj analizi konstrukcije strijele, koja je uobičajeni dio plovnih bagera. Predmet analize je konstrukcija strijele bagera vedričara rekonstruisanog za iskop šljunka sa dna vodotoka. Cilj rada je da dokaže prednosti dovoljno sofi sticiranog tj. “optimalnog” MKE modela za analizu ovog tipa konstrukcija u odnosu na jednostavne, ali neodgovarajuće modele. Odgovarajuće naponsko stanje je istaknuto kao primarni, ali ne i jedini uvjet za rabljenje bagera. Potrebno je osigurati i odgovarajuće stanje upotrebljivosti i trajnosti, kao i povoljne ekonomske uvjete izrade konstrukcije

    Fraunhofer diffraction description in the approximation of the light field theory

    The wavelength is that natural scale that determines the applicability domains of the ray approximation and the wave approximation of light. If the change of the radiation power spatial density is significant at the wavelength scale, we deal with the light diffraction phenomenon, which is a subject to the wave optics. Let us consider the diffraction phenomenon at the diaphragm. It is possible to distinguish the near zone with significant wave inhomogeneities (i.e. the Fresnel zone) and the far Fraunhofer diffraction zone, in which the wave becomes close to homogeneous (the so-called quasi-homogeneous) and the ray approximation is possible. The problem is that there is no explicit relationship between the radiance of the rays before and after diaphragm. Method for determining the boundary conditions for the radiance in the Fraunhofer zone through the radiance of the incident radiation is proposed in the paper. This approach for computing the radiance field in the Fraunhofer zone can be generalized to other problems of optics, thereby providing the possibility of using computationally efficient ray-approximation-based methods to determine the light fields
