    This study assesses the impact ofsocio-economic status and family life on perceptions of women's opportunities among German and British women and men. Our theoretical framework links national characteristics to individual characteristics and perceptions. We hypothesize that the influence of work-family status on perceptions of women's opportunities varies by gender and country because of crossnational differences in ideology and policy. Separate multiple regression analyses for women and men in eacb country' indicate important variations in the effects of labor force participation. family income, age, and family status on perceptions ofwomen's opportunities for education and employment

    Patterns in Family Policy Preferences in the European Union

    This study empirically examines the relationship between national content and individual preferences for national policy priorities related to improving family life within the European Union. Using data from the Eurobarometer survey, logistic regression models indicate that public opinion about nine potential priorities (housing, economic prospects, education, flexible work hours, childcare, tax advantages, child allowances, parental leave, and contraception) parallels and ideological subscription to traditional gender roles, the level of economic prosperity, and the degree and type of state support for families with children. We also find that women are more concerned about policies that enhance the reconciliation of work and family, while men are more concerned about policies that support their traditional breadwinner duties

    Development of Hollow Fiber-Based Bioreactor Systems for 3D Dynamic Neuronal Cell Cultures

    Adult central nervous system tissue does not retain the ability to regenerate and restore functional tissue lost to disease or trauma. The peripheral nervous system only has the capacity to regenerate when tissue damage is minor. Most in vitro research investigating the neurobiological mechanisms relevant for enhancing nerve regeneration has focused on culture of neuronal cells on a 2D surface under static conditions. We have performed studies enabling development of an advanced in vitro culture model based on hollow fiber-based bioreactors to allow high density neuronal cell networking with directed axonal outgrowth.The model neuronal-like PC12 cell line was initially used to compare neurite outgrowth after nerve growth factor stimulation between cultures under either static or dynamic conditions with 2D or 3D configurations. High density PC12 cell cultures with extensive neurite outgrowth in three dimensional collagen gels were only possible under the dynamically perfused conditions of a hollow fiber-based bioreactor. Analysis of neurite networking within cultures demonstrated enhanced active synapsin I+ synaptic vesicle clustering among PC12 cells cultured within the 3D dynamic bioreactor compared to cells cultured statically on a 2D surface. We further used two different hollow fiber-based bioreactor designs to investigate primary mouse neural stem cell differentiation within different injectable extracellular matrix hydrogel scaffolds cultured under dynamic conditions. HyStem, a cross-linked hyaluronan hydrogel, allowed structure formation with improved neuronal differentiation compared to collagen and Matrigel hydrogels.We have made further developments in order to create a new hollow fiber-based bioreactor device for controlling directed axonal growth. Excimer laser modification was utilized to fabricate hollow fiber scaffolds allowing control over axonal outgrowth from neurons within a 3D space. Incorporation of these scaffolds into a novel hollow fiber-based bioreactor design will produce a device for high density neuronal tissue formation with axonal outgrowth in a 3D configuration. Such a device will provide an advanced research tool for more accurate evaluation of neurobiological events and development of therapeutic strategies useful for enhancing nerve regeneration

    Current Concepts in Pediatric Robotic Assisted Pyeloplasty

    Robotic surgery in pediatric urology has been gaining popularity since its introduction almost two decades ago. Robotic assisted pyeloplasty is the most common robotic procedure performed in pediatric urology. Advances in robotic technology, instrumentation, patient care and surgical expertise have allowed the correction of ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction in most patients using this minimally invasive technique. The excellent experience with robotic assisted pyeloplasty has challenged other approaches as a new standard for the treatment of UPJ obstruction. In this review, we will describe the technique as it relates to the different robotic platforms, review the surgical experience and compare its results to other surgical approaches. Also, we will discuss patient and parent satisfaction, cost and financial considerations, along with evaluating the future of robotic surgery in the treatment of UPJ obstruction

    In Vitro and In Vivo Human Herpesvirus 8 Infection of Placenta

    Herpesvirus infection of placenta may be harmful in pregnancy leading to disorders in fetal growth, premature delivery, miscarriage, or major congenital abnormalities. Although a correlation between human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) infection and abortion or low birth weight in children has been suggested, and rare cases of in utero or perinatal HHV-8 transmission have been documented, no direct evidence of HHV-8 infection of placenta has yet been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo susceptibility of placental cells to HHV-8 infection. Short-term infection assays were performed on placental chorionic villi isolated from term placentae. Qualitative and quantitative HHV-8 detection were performed by PCR and real-time PCR, and HHV-8 proteins were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. Term placenta samples from HHV-8-seropositive women were analyzed for the presence of HHV-8 DNA and antigens. In vitro infected histocultures showed increasing amounts of HHV-8 DNA in tissues and supernatants; cyto- and syncitiotrophoblasts, as well as endothelial cells, expressed latent and lytic viral antigens. Increased apoptotic phenomena were visualized by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine nick end-labeling method in infected histocultures. Ex vivo, HHV-8 DNA and a latent viral antigen were detected in placenta samples from HHV-8-seropositive women. These findings demonstrate that HHV-8, like other human herpesviruses, may infect placental cells in vitro and in vivo, thus providing evidence that this phenomenon might influence vertical transmission and pregnancy outcome in HHV-8-infected women

    Thick collagen-based 3D matrices including growth factors to induce neurite outgrowth

    Designing synthetic microenvironments for cellular investigations is a very active area of research at the crossroads of cell biology and materials science. The present work describes the design and functionalization of a three-dimensional (3D) culture support dedicated to the study of neurite outgrowth from neural cells. It is based on a dense self-assembled collagen matrix stabilized by 100-nm wide interconnected native fibrils without chemical crosslinking. The matrices were made suitable for cell manipulation and direct observation in confocal microscopy by anchoring them to traditional glass supports with a calibrated thickness of ∼50 μm. The matrix composition can be readily adapted to specific neural cell types, notably by incorporating appropriate neurotrophic growth factors. Both PC-12 and SH-SY5Y lines respond to growth factors (nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor, respectively) impregnated and slowly released from the support. Significant neurite outgrowth is reported for a large proportion of cells, up to 66% for PC12 and 49% for SH-SY5Y. It is also shown that both growth factors can be chemically conjugated (EDC/NHS) throughout the matrix and yield similar proportions of cells with longer neurites (61% and 52%, respectively). Finally, neurite outgrowth was observed over several tens of microns within the 3D matrix, with both diffusing and immobilized growth factors

    Clinical trials for stem cell therapies

    In recent years, clinical trials with stem cells have taken the emerging field in many new directions. While numerous teams continue to refine and expand the role of bone marrow and cord blood stem cells for their vanguard uses in blood and immune disorders, many others are looking to expand the uses of the various types of stem cells found in bone marrow and cord blood, in particular mesenchymal stem cells, to uses beyond those that could be corrected by replacing cells in their own lineage. Early results from these trials have produced mixed results often showing minor or transitory improvements that may be attributed to extracellular factors. More research teams are accelerating the use of other types of adult stem cells, in particular neural stem cells for diseases where beneficial outcome could result from either in-lineage cell replacement or extracellular factors. At the same time, the first three trials using cells derived from pluripotent cells have begun

    The effect of autonomy, training opportunities, age and salaries on job satisfaction in the South East Asian retail petroleum industry

    South East Asian petroleum retailers are under considerable pressure to improve service quality by reducing turnover. An empirical methodology from this industry determined the extent to which job characteristics, training opportunities, age and salary influenced the level of job satisfaction, an indicator of turnover. Responses are reported on a random sample of 165 site employees (a 68% response rate) of a Singaporean retail petroleum firm. A restricted multivariate regression model of autonomy and training opportunities explained the majority (35.4%) of the variability of job satisfaction. Age did not moderate these relationships, except for employees >21 years of age, who reported enhanced job satisfaction with additional salary. Human Capital theory, Life Cycle theory and Job Enrichment theory are invoked and explored in the context of these findings in the South East Asian retail petroleum industry. In the South East Asian retail petroleum industry, jobs providing employees with the opportunity to undertake a variety of tasks that enhanced the experienced meaningfulness of work are likely to promote job satisfaction, reduce turnover and increase the quality of service

    Parasite infection is associated with Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus (KSHV) in Ugandan women

    Background: Immune modulation by parasites may influence susceptibility to bacteria and viruses. We examined the association between current parasite infections, HIV and syphilis (measured in blood or stool samples using standard methods) and antibodies against Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV), measured by ELISA, in 1915 stored plasma samples from pregnant women in Entebbe, Uganda.<p></p> Results: Seroprevalence of KSHV was higher in women with malaria parasitaemia (73% vs 60% p = 0.01), hookworm (67% vs 56% p = 0.001) and Mansonella perstans (69% vs 59% p = 0.05); seroprevalence increased with increasing intensity of hookworm infection (p < 0.001[trend]). No associations were found for HIV, five other parasites or active syphilis. These effects were not explained by socioeconomic status or education.<p></p> Conclusions: Specific parasite infections are associated with presence of antibodies against KSHV, perhaps mediated via their effect on immune function.<p></p&gt
