    Magnetically affected texture and microstructure evolution during grain growth in zirconium

    International audienceThe effect of a magnetic field on texture and microstructure development in cold rolled (80%) commercially pure zirconium (Zr701) was investigated. X-ray diffraction and EBSD measurements were utilized for the texture and microstructure characterization. The results revealed that a magnetic field promotes grain growth in the investigated material. During annealings at 550°C this is particularly apparent from the faster development of specific (0/180, 35, 30) texture components and the bigger mean grain size after magnetic annealing. The magnetic annealing at 700°C resulted in an asymmetry of the two major texture components. This is due to a magnetic driving force for grain growth arising from the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility of zirconium. During annealing at 700°C the abnormal grain growth occurred. This behavior is attributed to the higher mobility of grain boundaries between grains misoriented by 30° around [000. The magnetic field essentially enhanced the observed abnormal grain growth

    Cu-Au type orderings in the staggered quadrupolar region of the fcc Blume Emery Griffiths model

    The spin-1 Ising (BEG) model has been simulated using a cellular automaton (CA) algorithm improved from the Creutz cellular automaton (CCA) for a face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice. The ground state diagram (kk, dd) of the fcc BEG model has ferromagnetic (FF), quadrupolar (QQ) and staggered quadrupolar (SQSQ) ordering regions. The simulations have been made in the staggered quadrupolar region for the parameter values in the intervals −24≤d=D/J<0 -24\leq d=D/J<0 and −3≤k=K/J≤0-3\leq k=K/J\leq 0 . The phase diagrams on the (kTC/J kT_{C}/J, dd) and the (kTC/JkT_{C}/J, kk) planes have been obtained through k=−3 k=-3 and d=−4d=-4 lines, respectively. The staggered quadrupolar ordering region separates into five ordering regions (A3B(a)A_{3}B(a), A3B(f)A_{3}B(f), ABAB (type-I), ABAB(type-II) and AB3(f)AB_{3}(f)) which have the different stoichiometric Cu-Au type structures.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure

    Serum Zinc Correlates with Parent- and Teacher-Rated Inattention in Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

    Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the relationship of zinc nutrition to the severity of attentiondeficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in a middle-class American sample with well-diagnosed ADHD. Previous reports of zinc in ADHD, including two positive clinical trials of supplementation, have come mainly from countries and cultures with different diets and/or socioeconomic realities. Method: Children 5–10 years of age with DISC- and clinician-diagnosed ADHD had serum zinc determinations and parent and teacher ratings of ADHD symptoms. Zinc levels were correlated (Pearson’s and multiple regression) with ADHD symptom ratings. Results: Forty-eight children (37 boys, 11 girls; 33 combined type, 15 inattentive) had serum zinc levels with a median/mode at the lowest 30% of the laboratory reference range; 44 children also had parent/teacher ratings. Serum magnesium levels were normal. Nutritional intake by a parent-answered food frequency questionnaire was unremarkable. Serum zinc correlated at r = -0.45 (p = 0.004) with parent-teacher-rated inattention, even after controlling for gender, age, income, and diagnostic subtype, but only at r = -0.20 (p = 0.22) with CPT omission errors. In contrast, correlation with parent-teacher-rated hyperactivity-impulsivity was nonsignificant in the opposite direction. Conclusion: These findings add to accumulating evidence for a possible role of zinc in ADHD, even for middle-class Americans, and, for the first time, suggest a special relationship to inattentive symptoms. They do not establish either that zinc deficiency causes ADHD nor that ADHD should be treated with zinc. Hypothesis-testing clinical trials are needed

    adwTools Developed: New Bulk Alloy and Surface Analysis Software for the Alloy Design Workbench

    A suite of atomistic modeling software, called the Alloy Design Workbench, has been developed by the Computational Materials Group at the NASA Glenn Research Center and the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI). The main goal of this software is to guide and augment experimental materials research and development efforts by creating powerful, yet intuitive, software that combines a graphical user interface with an operating code suitable for real-time atomistic simulations of multicomponent alloy systems. Targeted for experimentalists, the interface is straightforward and requires minimum knowledge of the underlying theory, allowing researchers to focus on the scientific aspects of the work. The centerpiece of the Alloy Design Workbench suite is the adwTools module, which concentrates on the atomistic analysis of surfaces and bulk alloys containing an arbitrary number of elements. An additional module, adwParams, handles ab initio input for the parameterization used in adwTools. Future modules planned for the suite include adwSeg, which will provide numerical predictions for segregation profiles to alloy surfaces and interfaces, and adwReport, which will serve as a window into the database, providing public access to the parameterization data and a repository where users can submit their own findings from the rest of the suite. The entire suite is designed to run on desktop-scale computers. The adwTools module incorporates a custom OAI/Glenn-developed Fortran code based on the BFS (Bozzolo- Ferrante-Smith) method for alloys, ref. 1).     Vestibular Stimulation for ADHD: Randomized Controlled Trial of Comprehensive Motion Apparatus

    Objective: This research evaluates effects of vestibular stimulation by Comprehensive Motion Apparatus (CMA) in ADHD. Method: Children ages 6 to 12 (48 boys, 5 girls) with ADHD were randomized to thrice-weekly 30-min treatments for 12 weeks with CMA, stimulating otoliths and semicircular canals, or a single-blind control of equal duration and intensity, each treatment followed by a 20-min typing tutorial. Results: In intent-to-treat analysis (n = 50), primary outcome improved significantly in both groups (p = .0001, d = 1.09 to 1.30), but treatment difference not significant (p = .7). Control children regressed by follow-up (difference p = .034, d = 0.65), but overall difference was not significant (p = .13, d = .47). No measure showed significant treatment differences at treatment end, but one did at follow-up. Children with IQ-achievement discrepancy ≥ 1 SD showed significantly more CMA advantage on three measures. Conclusion: This study illustrates the importance of a credible control condition of equal duration and intensity in trials of novel treatments. CMA treatment cannot be recommended for combined-type ADHD without learning disorder

    Thermo-mechanical factors influencing annealing twin development in nickel during recrystallization

    Abstract The effects of prior stored energy level, annealing temperature, heating velocity, and initial grain size on annealing twin development during static recrystallization of commercially pure nickel (99.999 %) are investigated. The twin content (measured as the twin boundary density or as the number of twins per grain) at the end of recrystallization is shown to be primarily influenced by the prior stored energy level and by the initial grain size, but the effects of heating rate and the annealing temperature are negligible. Taken together, the results are consistent with a new proposition that roughness of the recrystallization front promotes the formation of annealing twins during recrystallization

    Recrystallization mechanisms and associated microstructure evolution during billet conversion of a gamma-gamma' nickel based superalloy

    A partially recrystallized sample of the Ni-based superalloy AD730 was taken from an intermediate stage of the ingot to billet conversion process and isothermally forged in a single stroke compression test at a sub-solvus temperature (1080 °C). The as-received material had a heterogeneous microstructure, containing a mixture of coarse and much finer recrystallized grains as well as unrecrystallized ones, and also heterogeneous γ′ precipitation. The recrystallization mechanisms occurring dynamically in the different grain populations were investigated via electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). It was found that local microstructure could affect the operative recrystallization mechanism, with different mechanisms seen in the deformed and recrystallized regions, owing to their different precipitate distributions. Within a single deformed grain, three apparently distinct dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanisms were identified. The interaction of recrystallization with precipitates plays a central role in DRX. In certain cases precipitates may stimulate discontinuous DRX by providing recrystallization nuclei, alternatively they may impede and limit the growth of recrystallized grains, or in other cases still they promote continuous recrystallization

    Introduction Clinical activity of SLE may wax and wane, but persistent, active systemic inflammation leads to organ damage and rises morbidity and mortality. Early damage is mostly related to disease activity, whereas later damage, in particular atherosclerosis, infections and malignancies are usual complications of long-standing disease and treatment with immunosuppressive agents. One of the major late causes of death in SLE is thrombosis, in particular stroke and myocardial infarction due to CAD. In these patients, the increased cardiovascular morbidity is not fully explained by traditional risk factors and this may lead to under-recognition and under-treatment. Petri, et al. proposed an equation for cardiovascular disease risk in SLE, which combines classical parameters and disease activity markers. Other scores such as the GAPSS(Global AntiPhospholipid Syndrome Score) have been recently evaluated. The importance of aPL in thrombosis in general is well defined, as they constitute the culprit of the so-called anti-phospholipid syndrome(APS). Their role in sustaining the high risk of cardiovascular complications of SLE patients is under-debated. Objective To study the role of the anti-phosphatidylserine/prothrombin(aPS/PT) antibodies, included in the GAPSS score, in contributing to the thrombotic risk of SLE patients. Methods We enrolled 172 patients from Ospedale San Raffaele. 132 patients with SLE(111/132, 84% without secondary APS, SAPS, and 21/132, 16% with SAPS), 19 with primary APS(PAPS) and 21 healthy controls. Each recruited patient was tested for aPS/PT IgG and IgM through ELISA by INOVA Diagnostic, Inc. San Diego, CA USA. Results 36/111 (32.4%) SLE without APS, 15/21 (71.4%) SAPS, 13/19 (68.4%) PAPS and 3/21 (14.3%) healthy donors were aPS/PT+. aPS/PT+SLE patients had a higher cardiovascular risk according to the Petri's score, when compared to aPS/PT-patients, irrespectively of a positive or negative history of overt APS(Mean ±SD Petri' score=20.8±18.1, 14.0±12.8 and 23.8±22.5, 11.6±9.3 respectively, p 10 had also higher prevalence of pregnancy complications. Conclusion aPS/PT antibodies are associated with a high risk of thrombosis and CAD in SLE. aPS/PT assays should be routinely introduced in the management of these patients

    ANCA-associated vasculitis in childhood: Recent advances

    Abstract Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides are rare systemic diseases that usually occur in adulthood. They comprise granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA, Wegener’s), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA, Churg-Strauss syndrome). Their clinical presentation is often heterogeneous, with frequent involvement of the respiratory tract, the kidney, the skin and the joints. ANCA-associated vasculitis is rare in childhood but North-American and European cohort studies performed during the last decade have clarified their phenotype, patterns of renal involvement and their prognostic implications, and outcome. Herein, we review the main clinical and therapeutic aspects of childhood-onset ANCA-associated vasculitis, and provide preliminary data on demographic characteristics and organ manifestations of an Italian multicentre cohort

    Effects of anharmonic strain on phase stability of epitaxial films and superlattices: applications to noble metals

    Epitaxial strain energies of epitaxial films and bulk superlattices are studied via first-principles total energy calculations using the local-density approximation. Anharmonic effects due to large lattice mismatch, beyond the reach of the harmonic elasticity theory, are found to be very important in Cu/Au (lattice mismatch 12%), Cu/Ag (12%) and Ni/Au (15%). We find that is the elastically soft direction for biaxial expansion of Cu and Ni, but it is for large biaxial compression of Cu, Ag, and Au. The stability of superlattices is discussed in terms of the coherency strain and interfacial energies. We find that in phase-separating systems such as Cu-Ag the superlattice formation energies decrease with superlattice period, and the interfacial energy is positive. Superlattices are formed easiest on (001) and hardest on (111) substrates. For ordering systems, such as Cu-Au and Ag-Au, the formation energy of superlattices increases with period, and interfacial energies are negative. These superlattices are formed easiest on (001) or (110) and hardest on (111) substrates. For Ni-Au we find a hybrid behavior: superlattices along and like in phase-separating systems, while for they behave like in ordering systems. Finally, recent experimental results on epitaxial stabilization of disordered Ni-Au and Cu-Ag alloys, immiscible in the bulk form, are explained in terms of destabilization of the phase separated state due to lattice mismatch between the substrate and constituents.Comment: RevTeX galley format, 16 pages, includes 9 EPS figures, to appear in Physical Review
