    Eating With Your Eyes: What You See May Predict What You Eat.

    This study investigated whether regulatory focus and social comparison could predict healthy eating intention. The Theory of Planned Behavior explained eating intention and healthy and unhealthy food photos from social networking sites, along with an androgynous target were used to induce feelings of similarity. Participants were randomly assigned to four surveys. Using a regression, it was found that healthy eating intention was predicted by promotion focus. However, social comparison did not yield significance. We found that although there was a significant relationship between promotion focus and healthy eating intention, it did not matter if the participant felt similar to the target, nor did it matter whether the participant received an upward or downward comparison target. This is an important topic to study because eating behavior can affect peoples quality of life depending on if they eat healthy or unhealthy

    Aplicación de la metodología smed para la reducción de los tiempos de cambio de formato en una línea de producción de helados

    El presente estudio se basa en la implementación de la metodología SMED (“Single Minute Exchange of Die”) en una planta manufacturera de helados, líder en el mercado nacional y pionera en la implementación de sistemas de mejora continua. La optimización de la eficiencia como fundamento para la reducción de costos y cumplimiento de los volúmenes demandados por el mercado llevaron a la planta a buscar maneras de reducir las pérdidas más significativas de la planta lo que convierte a la perdida por cambio de formato en la más representativa en todas las plantas de helados. La metodología utilizada consiste en la identificación de la línea más significativa para la planta basada en un análisis de volumen, numero de SKUs y tiempos perdidos. Una vez identificada la línea se identificará a través de la matriz de cambios de formato cual es el cambio más significativo para la línea. En este paso restringimos el análisis al proceso más completo y complejo de la línea por la cantidad de equipos y ajustes necesarios, el cual servirá de base de mejora para todos los procesos de la línea

    Characterization of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPR) isolated from the rhizosphere of Arthrocnemum macrostachyum.

    Motivation: The recent boom in organic agriculture has awakened the need to find alternative methods to chemical products. PGPRs (plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria) are rhizospheric bacteria that contribute in a favourable way for the plant development through different mechanisms like exudates production (that enhance plant rooting), nutrient solubilization or resistance to pathogenic agents (1). The study of these microorganisms and its subsequent use for different agriculture requirements is a viable option in order to get good results in a more sustainable way. In addition, it is an interesting approach to promote the soil regenerative abilities of some plants, like the halophyte Arthrocnemum macrostachyum (2).Methods: Bacteria from the rhizosphere of A. macrostachyum were isolated from plants grown in different areas at the Lebrija marshes. 5 µl of exponentially bacterial cultures were dropped onto Petri dishes containing different media: CAS to test siderophores production (3), PVK for phosphate solubilization (3), nutrient broth supplemented with NaCl for testing tolerance to sodium chloride and nutrient broth with 0,5mM and 1mM Zn concentrations to test heavy metal resistance. All of them were incubated at 28ºC for 72h. Acyl-homoserine lactone and indolacetic acid (IAA) production tests (3) were also performed. In addition, 5 µl droplets of each bacterial suspension were spotted on Petri dishes together with a disk of active Macrophomina phaseolina culture to test antifungal activity.Results: A total of 203 strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of A.macrostachyum plants. In CAS medium, 40% of them formed an orange-yellowish halo, denoting siderophore production. In PVK medium, 7% shown a transparent halo, indicating phosphate solubilization ability. 30% of the strains were auxin producers, while only a 13% exhibited the quorum sensing mechanism. 3% of all the strains displayed high halotolerance, showed positive growth in 24 % (p/v) NaCl. 5% and 3% of the strains were able to grow in the presence of 0,5 and 1 mM Zn, respectively. Taking into account fungicide activity, 11% of the bacterial isolates are able to inhibit the growth of the pathogenic fungus M. phaseolina.Conclusions: An earlier conclusion of this incipient study is that the rhizosphere of halophyte plants living in natural stressing areas is a good source for isolating bacteria with desirable properties to be used as PGPR and also for the control of pathogenic fungus

    Here we describe modified syntheses of o-acetylbenzoic acids and o-acetylphenylacetic acids by Heck palladium-catalysed arylation of n-butyl vinyl ether with o-iodobenzoic acids or with o-iodophenylacetic acids, respectively.     Increased mRNA expression of cytochrome oxidase in dorsal raphe nucleus of depressive suicide victims

    Suicidal behavior is a problem with important social repercussions. Some groups of the population show a higher risk of suicide; for example, depression, alcoholism, psychosis or drug abuse frequently precedes suicidal behavior. However, the relationship between metabolic alterations in the brain and premorbid clinical symptoms of suicide remains uncertain. The serotonergic and noradrenergic systems have frequently been, implicated in suicidal behavior and the amount of serotonin in the brain and CSF of suicide victims has been found to be low compared with normal subjects. However, there are contradictory results regarding the role of noradrenergic neurons in the mediation of suicide attempts, possibly reflecting the heterogeneity of conditions that lead to a common outcome. In the present work we focus on the subgroup of suicide victims that share a common diagnosis of major depression. Based on post-mortem studies analyzing mRNA expression by in situ hybridization, serotonergic neurons from the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) from depressive suicide victims are seen to over-express cytochrome oxidase mRNA. However, no corresponding changes were found in the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) mRNA in the noradrenergic neurons of the Locus Coeruleus (LC). These results suggest that, despite of the low levels of serotonin described in suicide victims, the activity of DRN neurons could increase in the suicidally depressed, probably due to the over activation of serotonin re-uptake. No alteration was found in noradrenergic neurons, suggesting that they play no crucial role in the suicidal behavior of depressive patients

    Structural representations of DNA regulatory substrates can enhance sequence-based algorithms by associating functional sequence variants

    The nucleotide sequence representation of DNA can be inadequate for resolving protein-DNA binding sites and regulatory substrates, such as those involved in gene expression and horizontal gene transfer. Considering that sequence-like representations are algorithmically very useful, here we fused over 60 currently available DNA physicochemical and conformational variables into compact structural representations that can encode single DNA binding sites to whole regulatory regions. We find that the main structural components reflect key properties of protein-DNA interactions and can be condensed to the amount of information found in a single nucleotide position. The most accurate structural representations compress functional DNA sequence variants by 30% to 50%, as each instance encodes from tens to thousands of sequences. We show that a structural distance function discriminates among groups of DNA substrates more accurately than nucleotide sequence-based metrics. As this opens up a variety of implementation possibilities, we develop and test a distance-based alignment algorithm, demonstrating the potential of using the structural representations to enhance sequence-based algorithms.     Identifying and preventing burnout in young oncologists, an overwhelming challenge in the COVID-19 era: a study of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM)

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has forced rapid changes in professionals' jobs and training, with the consequent physical and psychological effects. We aimed to characterize burnout levels and determinants in young oncologists, and the effects of the pandemic on their training and health. Methods Two online surveys were conducted among oncology residents and young oncology specialists in Spain. The first addressed professional burnout and its determinants before the COVID-19 pandemic, while the second analyzed the impact of the pandemic on health care organization, training, and physical and psychological health in the same population. Results In total, 243 respondents completed the first survey, and 263 the second; 25.1% reported significant levels of professional burnout. Burnout was more common among medical oncology residents (28.2%), mainly in their second year of training. It was significantly associated with a poor work–life balance, inadequate vacation time, and the burnout score. Nearly three-quarters of respondents (72%) were reassigned to COVID-19 care and 84.3% of residents missed part of their training rotations. Overall, 17.2% of this population reported that they had contracted COVID-19, 37.3% had scores indicating anxiety, and 30.4% moderate to severe depression. Almost a quarter of young oncologists (23.3%) had doubts about their medical vocation. Conclusions Burnout affects a considerable number of young oncologists. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on causes of burnout, making it even more necessary to periodically monitor it to define appropriate detection and prevention strategies.This project received funding from the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM)

    Bridges of biomaterials promote nigrostriatal pathway regeneration

    [EN] Repair of central nervous system (CNS) lesions is difficulted by the lack of ability of central axons to regrow, and the blocking by the brain astrocytes to axonal entry. We hypothesized that by using bridges made of porous biomaterial and permissive olfactory ensheathing glia (OEG), we could provide a scaffold to permit restoration of white matter tracts. We implanted porous polycaprolactone (PCL) bridges between the substantia nigra and the striatum in rats, both with and without OEG. We compared the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase positive (TH+) fibers crossing the striatal-graft interface, and the astrocytic and microglial reaction around the grafts, between animals grafted with and without OEG. Although TH+ fibers were found inside the grafts made of PCL alone, there was a greater fiber density inside the graft and at the striatal-graft interface when OEG was cografted. Also, there was less astrocytic and microglial reaction in those animals. These results show that these PCL grafts are able to promote axonal growth along the nigrostriatal pathway, and that cografting of OEG markedly enhances axonal entry inside the grafts, growth within them, and re-entry of axons into the CNS.     Dynamic risk control by human nucleus accumbens

    Real-world decisions about reward often involve a complex counterbalance of risk and value. Although the nucleus accumbens has been implicated in the underlying neural substrate, its criticality to human behaviour remains an open question, best addressed with interventional methodology that probes the behavioural consequences of focal neural modulation. Combining a psychometric index of risky decision-making with transient electrical modulation of the nucleus accumbens, here we reveal profound, highly dynamic alteration of the relation between probability of reward and choice during therapeutic deep brain stimulation in four patients with treatment-resistant psychiatric disease. Short-lived phasic electrical stimulation of the region of the nucleus accumbens dynamically altered risk behaviour, transiently shifting the psychometric function towards more risky decisions only for the duration of stimulation. A critical, on-line role of human nucleus accumbens in dynamic risk control is thereby established
