A nonlinear equation for ionic diffusion in a strong binary electrolyte
The problem of the one dimensional electro-diffusion of ions in a strong
binary electrolyte is considered. In such a system the solute dissociates
completely into two species of ions with unlike charges. The mathematical
description consists of a diffusion equation for each species augmented by
transport due to a self consistent electrostatic field determined by the
Poisson equation. This mathematical framework also describes other important
problems in physics such as electron and hole diffusion across semi-conductor
junctions and the diffusion of ions in plasmas. If concentrations do not vary
appreciably over distances of the order of the Debye length, the Poisson
equation can be replaced by the condition of local charge neutrality first
introduced by Planck. It can then be shown that both species diffuse at the
same rate with a common diffusivity that is intermediate between that of the
slow and fast species (ambipolar diffusion). Here we derive a more general
theory by exploiting the ratio of Debye length to a characteristic length scale
as a small asymptotic parameter. It is shown that the concentration of either
species may be described by a nonlinear integro-differential equation which
replaces the classical linear equation for ambipolar diffusion but reduces to
it in the appropriate limit. Through numerical integration of the full set of
equations it is shown that this nonlinear equation provides a better
approximation to the exact solution than the linear equation it replaces.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Pathogen burden and cortisol profiles over the day
Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) regulation in adults is influenced by early psychosocial adversity, but the role of infectious disease history is poorly understood. We studied the association between cumulative pathogen burden and cortisol profile over the day in a sample of 317 healthy men and women aged 51-72 years. Cumulative pathogen burden was defined as positive serostatus for Chlamydia pneumoniae, cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). Salivary cortisol was sampled repeatedly over the day. The cortisol slope was defined as the decrease across the day and evening. Age, gender, grade of employment, body mass index, smoking status, self-rated health, cardiovascular medication, depressed mood and time of waking were included as covariates. The pathogen burden averaged 1.76 (S.D. = 0.92). The cortisol slope was inversely associated with pathogen burden after controlling for covariates. When individual pathogens were studied, only CMV was associated with flatter cortisol rhythms in isolation. We conclude that pathogen burden is independently associated with flatter cortisol slopes over the day, and may contribute to disturbed neuroendocrine regulation
Understanding Current Signals Induced by Drifting Electrons
Consider an electron drifting in a gas toward a collection electrode. A
common misconception is that the electron produces a detectable signal only
upon arrival at the electrode. In fact, the situation is quite the opposite.
The electron induces a detectable current in the electrode as soon as it starts
moving through the gas. This induced current vanishes when the electron arrives
at the plate. To illustrate this phenomenon experimentally, we use a gas-filled
parallel plate ionization chamber and a collimated Am alpha source,
which produces a track of a fixed number of ionization electrons at a constant
distance from the collection electrode. We find that the detected signal from
the ionization chamber grows with the electron drift distance, as predicted by
the model of charge induction, and in conflict with the idea that electrons are
detectable upon arrival at the collection plate.Comment: 21 pages, 12 figure
Multidimensional measurement within adult protective services: design and initial testing of the tool for risk, interventions, and outcomes.
This study describes the development, field utility, reliability, and validity of the multidimensional Tool for Risk, Interventions, and Outcomes (TRIO) for use in Adult Protective Services (APS). The TRIO is designed to facilitate consistent APS practice and collect data related to multiple dimensions of typical interactions with APS clients, including the investigation and assessment of risks, the provision of APS interventions, and associated health and safety outcomes. Initial tests of the TRIO indicated high field utility, social worker "relevance and buy-in," and inter-rater reliability. TRIO concurrent validity was demonstrated via appropriate patterns of TRIO item differentiation based on the type of observed confirmed abuse or neglect; and predictive validity was demonstrated by prediction of the risk of actual APS recurrence. The TRIO is a promising new tool that can help meet the challenges of providing and documenting effective APS practices and identifying those at high risk for future APS recurrence
Measuring compulsive buying behaviour: Psychometric validity of three different scales and prevalence in the general population and in shopping centres
Due to the problems of measurement and the lack of nationally representative data, the extent of compulsive buying behaviour (CBB) is relatively unknown. Methods: The validity of three different instruments was tested: Edwards Compulsive Buying Scale (ECBS; Edwards, 1993), Questionnaire About Buying Behavior (QABB; Lejoyeux & Adès, 1994) and Richmond Compulsive Buying Scale (RCBS; Ridgway, et. al., 2008) using two independent samples. One was nationally representative of the Hungarian population (N=2710) while the other comprised shopping mall customers (N=1447). Results: A new, four-factor solution for the ECBS was developed (ECBS-R), and confirmed the other two measures. Additionally, cut-off scores were defined for all measures. Results showed that the prevalence of CBB is 1.85% (with QABB) in the general population but significantly higher in shopping mall customers (8.7% with ECBS-R, 13.3% with QABB and 2.5% with RCBS-R). Conclusions: Due to the diversity of content, each measure identifies a somewhat different CBB group
Short turn-around intercontinental clock synchronization using very-long-baseline interferometry
During the past year work was accomplished to bring into regular operation a VLBI system for making intercontinental clock comparisons with a turn around of a few days from the time of data taking. Earlier VLBI systems required several weeks to produce results. The present system, which is not yet complete, incorporates a number of refinements not available in earlier systems, such as dual frequency inosopheric delay cancellation and wider synthesized bandwidths with instrumental phase calibration
Crystallization of agility: Back to basics
There are a number of agile and traditional methodologies for software development. Agilists provide agile principles and agile values to characterize the agile methods but there is no clear and inclusive definition of agile methods; subsequently it is not feasible to draw a clear distinction between traditional and agile software development methods in practice. The purpose of this paper is to explain the concept of agility in detail; and then to suggest a definition of agile methods that would help in the ranking or differentiation of agile methods from other available methods
Information complementarity in quantum physics
We demonstrate that the concept of information offers a more complete
description of complementarity than the traditional approach based on
observables. We present the first experimental test of information
complementarity for two-qubit pure states, achieving close agreement with
theory; We also explore the distribution of information in a comprehensive
range of mixed states. Our results highlight the strange and subtle properties
of even the simplest quantum systems: for example, entanglement can be
