    On the Wilf-Stanley limit of 4231-avoiding permutations and a conjecture of Arratia

    We construct a sequence of finite automata that accept subclasses of the class of 4231-avoiding permutations. We thereby show that the Wilf-Stanley limit for the class of 4231-avoiding permutations is bounded below by 9.35. This bound shows that this class has the largest such limit among all classes of permutations avoiding a single permutation of length 4 and refutes the conjecture that the Wilf-Stanley limit of a class of permutations avoiding a single permutation of length k cannot exceed (k-1)^2.Comment: Submitted to Advances in Applied Mathematic

    Quantum models of classical mechanics: maximum entropy packets

    In a previous paper, a project of constructing quantum models of classical properties has been started. The present paper concludes the project by turning to classical mechanics. The quantum states that maximize entropy for given averages and variances of coordinates and momenta are called ME packets. They generalize the Gaussian wave packets. A non-trivial extension of the partition-function method of probability calculus to quantum mechanics is given. Non-commutativity of quantum variables limits its usefulness. Still, the general form of the state operators of ME packets is obtained with its help. The diagonal representation of the operators is found. A general way of calculating averages that can replace the partition function method is described. Classical mechanics is reinterpreted as a statistical theory. Classical trajectories are replaced by classical ME packets. Quantum states approximate classical ones if the product of the coordinate and momentum variances is much larger than Planck constant. Thus, ME packets with large variances follow their classical counterparts better than Gaussian wave packets.Comment: 26 pages, no figure.     Coherent interferometry migration for hard rock diamond drill-bit seismic

    We use the direct wave interferometry migration with coherency measurement to image the diamond drill-bit. The success of such imaging can prove if the direct waves from the drill-bit can be detected. The drilling signals usually contain strong narrow band interference noises. We suggest to use interferometry by deconvolution for migration, which widens the cross spectrum, hence the weak coherent features can be better observed. Additionally, we suggest to integrate coherent measurement of semblance or Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) into the algorithm in order to detect weak drill-bit signal. We test both methods with a synthetic and a diamond drill-bit seismic-while-drilling (SWD) field data. MUSIC coherency shows relatively better spatial resolution in contrast to semblance method. It also demonstrates better detectability of weak signal than summation and semblance. Our field SWD data also indicates that the interferometry migration can image the diamond drill-bit with appropriate survey parameters, and the MUSIC method achieves a high spatial resolution

    Temporal characteristics of speech: The effect of age and speech style

    Aging affects temporal characteristics of speech. It is still a question how these changes occur in different speech styles which require various cognitive skills. In this paper speech rate, articulation rate, and pauses of 20 young and 20 old speakers are analyzed in four speech tyles: spontaneous narrative, narrative recalls, a three-participant conversation, and reading aloud. Results show that age has a significant effect only on speech rate, articulation rate, and frequency of pauses. Speech style has a higher effect on temporal parameters than speakers’ age

    We extend the concept of pattern avoidance in permutations on a totally ordered set to pattern avoidance in permutations on partially ordered sets. The number of permutations on PP that avoid the pattern π\pi is denoted AvP(π)Av_P(\pi).
