    Early life factors and risk of childhood rhabdomyosarcoma.

    Although little is known about etiology of childhood rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), early life factors are suspected in the etiology. We explored this hypothesis using linked data from the California Cancer Registry and the California birth rolls. Incident cases were 359 children <6-year-old (218 embryonal, 81 alveolar, 60 others) diagnosed in 1988-2008. Controls (205, 173), frequency matched on birth year (1986-2007), were randomly selected from the birth rolls. We examined association of birth characteristics such as birth weight, size for gestational age, and timing of prenatal care with all-type RMS, embryonal, and alveolar subtypes. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using logistic regression. In contrast to a previous study, we observed statistically non-significant association for embryonal subtype among high birth weight (4000-5250 g) children for term births [OR (95% CI): 1.28 (0.85, 1.92)] and all births adjusted for gestational age [OR (95% CI): 1.21 (0.81, 1.81)]. On the other hand, statistically significant 1.7-fold increased risk of alveolar subtype (95% CI: 1.02, 2.87) was observed among children with late or no prenatal care and a 1.3-fold increased risk of all RMS subtypes among children of fathers ≥35 years old at child birth (95% CI: 1.00, 1.75), independent of all covariates. Our finding of positive association on male sex for all RMS types is consistent with previous studies. While we did not find a convincingly positive association between high birth weight and RMS, our findings on prenatal care supports the hypothesis that prenatal environment modifies risk for childhood RMS

    Quantifying Resources in General Resource Theory with Catalysts

A question that is commonly asked in all areas of physics is how a certain property of a physical system can be used to achieve useful tasks and how to quantify the amount of such a property in a meaningful way. We answer this question by showing that, in a general resource-theoretic framework that allows the use of free states as catalysts, the amount of "resources" contained in a given state, in the asymptotic scenario, is equal to the regularized relative entropy of a resource of that state. While we need to place a few assumptions on our resource-theoretical framework, it is still sufficiently general, and its special cases include quantum resource theories of entanglement, coherence, asymmetry, athermality, nonuniformity, and purity. As a by-product, our result also implies that the amount of noise one has to inject locally to erase all the entanglement contained in an entangled state is equal to the regularized relative entropy of entanglement

    A novel efficient design analysis has been proposed for a reduced-size dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) using perturbed system of partial differential equations. This has been done by using half-volume resonator with short-circuited plane of symmetry. The design serves as a new configuration of planar antenna, thus making integration of active devices easier. The antenna shows remarkable performance, having low cross-polarization levels and reasonably well radiation patterns. The antenna design has been simulated using a new analytical framework created in MATLAB giving accurate measurement details

    Background: Comparative study of Pharmacological and Pharmaco- Mechanical method of induction of labour- A Randomised study. The objective of the study was to compare efficacy of pharmacological and combined pharmaco-mechanical method of induction of labour.Methods: A study was conducted in the department of Obstetrics and gynaecology, Adichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre for a period of 18 months. 200 pregnant women requiring induction of labour were included in the study.  In group 1 Dinoprostone 0.5 mg gel was inserted into cervical canal. In group 2 Foley’s catheter No 18 F was inserted within the cervix. The balloon of the catheter was filled with 30 ml normal saline and at the same time Dinoprostone 0.5 mg gel was inserted into posterior vaginal fornix. The Excel and SPSS (SPSS Inc, Chicago V 18.5) software packages were used for data entry and analysis. The results were averaged (mean ± Std Deviation) for each parameter for continuous data in tables.Results: Mean induction to active phase interval in group 1 was 8.43±4.11 hrs, in group 26.82±3.01 hrs (p =0.001). The rate of vaginal delivery in group 1 and group 2 was 55% and 66% respectively, difference was statistically significant (p=0.026).Conclusions: Synchronous use of intracervical Foley’s catheter and Dinoprostone 0.5 mg resulted in a shorter time for progress to active phase and also shortened induction to delivery interval as compared to Dinoprostone 0.5 mg alone. Higher risk of caesarean delivery was associated with single method as compared to combined methods.

    Centrifugal Force and Ellipticity behaviour of a slowly rotating ultra compact object

    Using the optical reference geometry approach, we have derived in the following, a general expression for the ellipticity of a slowly rotating fluid configuration using Newtonian force balance equation in the conformally projected absolute 3-space, in the realm of general relativity. Further with the help of Hartle-Thorne (H-T) metric for a slowly rotating compact object, we have evaluated the centrifugal force acting on a fluid element and also evaluated the ellipticity and found that the centrifugal reversal occurs at around R/Rs≈1.45R/R_s \approx 1.45, and the ellipticity maximum at around R/Rs≈2.75R/R_s \approx 2.75. The result has been compared with that of Chandrasekhar and Miller which was obtained in the full 4-spacetime formalism

    The most ancient spiral galaxy: a 2.6-Gyr-old disk with a tranquil velocity field

    We report an integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) observation of a gravitationally lensed spiral galaxy A1689B11 at redshift z=2.54z=2.54. It is the most ancient spiral galaxy discovered to date and the second kinematically confirmed spiral at z≳2z\gtrsim2. Thanks to gravitational lensing, this is also by far the deepest IFS observation with the highest spatial resolution (∼\sim 400 pc) on a spiral galaxy at a cosmic time when the Hubble sequence is about to emerge. After correcting for a lensing magnification of 7.2 ±\pm 0.8, this primitive spiral disk has an intrinsic star formation rate of 22 ±\pm 2 M⊙M_{\odot} yr−1^{-1}, a stellar mass of 109.8±0.3^{9.8 \pm 0.3}M⊙M_{\odot} and a half-light radius of r1/2=2.6±0.7r_{1/2}=2.6 \pm 0.7 kpc, typical of a main-sequence star-forming (SF) galaxy at z∼2z\sim2. However, the H\alpha\ kinematics show a surprisingly tranquil velocity field with an ordered rotation (VcV_{\rm c} = 200 ±\pm 12 km/s) and uniformly small velocity dispersions (Vσ,meanV_{\rm \sigma, mean} = 23 ±\pm 4 km/s and Vσ,outer−diskV_{\rm \sigma, outer-disk} = 15 ±\pm 2 km/s). The low gas velocity dispersion is similar to local spiral galaxies and is consistent with the classic density wave theory where spiral arms form in dynamically cold and thin disks. We speculate that A1689B11 belongs to a population of rare spiral galaxies at z≳2z\gtrsim2 that mark the formation epoch of thin disks. Future observations with JWST will greatly increase the sample of these rare galaxies and unveil the earliest onset of spiral arms.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in Ap
