History of Arab navigation in the Indian Ocean

    Get PDF
The paper describes a brief history of the Arab navigation based on the original Arabic sources from the 9th century onwards. The old literature indicates that the Arabs had a good knowledge of the wind-directions, currents and tides. They also knew the most favourable seasons for sailing from the different ports. The Arabs described the reversing currents in the North Indian Ocean and made several interesting observations on bioluminescence, discoloration of sea water, etc. They also made references on the light houses at the entrance of Persian Gulf and on the eddies, ascending currents and cyclonic winds. Arab navigation in the Indian Ocean had deep connections with the Indian and Persian nautical traditions. These probably dates back to the first century when the Sanskrit " Jataka Mala " ( maritime code ) was written. The highly cultivated knowledge of the Arabs on nautical matters could be attributed to their knowledge of the stars, their eagerness to undertake extensive voyages and their desire to translate the relevant works in other languages into Arabic. The impact of nautical traditions of the Arabs on the Portuguese and Turkish navigations has been of considerable value

The Court determined that (1) 12 U.S.C. § 1821(d)(14)(A) (the “FDIC extender statute”)[1] preempts any similarly applicable state law, in this case NRS 40.4055(1)[2]; and (2) the Court refused to adopt a rule that a state statute of repose cannot be preempted by federal law. [1] “Under the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act of 1989 (FIRREA),…the [FDIC] acts as a conservator or receiver for failed financial institutions. 12 U.S.C. § 1821(d)(2)(A) (2012). FIRREA extends the time period for the FDIC, in its capacity as the failed institution\u27s conservator or receiver, to bring a contract claim that has otherwise been barred by a state statutory time limitation: [T]he applicable statute of limitations with regard to any action brought by [the FDIC] as conservator or receiver shall be- (i) in the case of any contract claim, the longer of— (I) the 6-year period beginning on the date the claim accrues; or (II) the period applicable under State law. 12 U.S.C. § 1821(d)(14)(A) (2012)” [2] “Nevada provides for a shorter six-month time limitation for deficiency judgment actions under NRS 40.455(1), which states that upon application of the judgment creditor or the beneficiary of the deed of trust within 6 months after the date of the foreclosure sale or the trustee\u27s sale held pursuant to NRS 107.080, respectively, and after the required hearing, the court shall award a deficiency judgment to the judgment creditor or the beneficiary of the deed of trust. . .

A filter design approach to maximize ampacity of cables in nonsinusoidal power systems

    Get PDF
This paper presents an optimal design of the C-type passive filters for the effective utilization of the power cables under nonsinusoidal conditions based on maximization of the harmonic derating factor (HDF) of a power cable, where maintaining the load true power factor at an acceptable range is desired. According to IEEE Standard 519, the total harmonic distortions of the voltage and current measured at the point of common coupling are taken into account as main constraints of the proposed approach. The presented numerical results show that the proposed approach provides higher current carrying capacity, or ampacity of the cables under nonsinusoidal conditions when compared to the traditional approaches based on minimization of the current total harmonic distortion and maximization of the true load power factor. A numerical case study is presented to demonstrate the proposed approach

Luxury hotel types: Examining the effects of (in)conspicuous consumption orientation on luxury hotels’ valuations

    Get PDF
The present research aims to examine how conspicuous consumption orientation impacts consumers’ valuations of luxury hotel types – subtle versus extravagant. Two experimental studies were performed and results show that indeed conspicuous consumption orientation moderates the relationship between luxury hotel type and consumers’ enjoyment and quality perceptions. Also their likelihood of staying and willingness to pay for a hotel. Specifically, results show that low conspicuous-oriented individuals seem to value more subtle than extravagant luxury hotels. Yet, for high conspicuous-oriented individuals no significant differences are observed when exposed to either hotel types. Our findings further suggest that, overall, there are greater sustainability expectations towards hotels that provide more subtle and inconspicuous hotel experiences than hotels that provide more extravagant and conspicuous experiences. Theoretical and managerial implications are provided.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Clinical decision analysis: Incorporating the evidence with patient preferences

    Get PDF
Decision analysis has become an increasingly popular decision-making tool with a multitude of clinical applications. Incorporating patient and expert preferences with available literature, it allows users to apply evidence-based medicine to make informed decisions when confronted with difficult clinical scenarios. A decision tree depicts potential alternatives and outcomes involved with a given decision. Probabilities and utilities are used to quantify the various options and help determine the best course of action. Sensitivity analysis allows users to explore the uncertainty of data on expected clinical outcomes. The decision maker can thereafter establish a preferred method of treatment and explore variables which influence the final clinical outcome. The present paper reviews the technique of decision analysis with particular focus on its application to clinical decision making

Luxury brands on Instagram: A netnographic approach

    Get PDF
The present research concerns a netnography study from June 1st 2020 to January 1st 2021on Instagram communication of six luxury brands: Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Dior, Chanel and Burberry. Five variables were taken into consideration: number of followers, number of posts, average comments, average likes and engagement rate. This qualitative study reflects the impact of digital transformation on the luxury market. Overall, results demonstrate luxury brands similarities in their Instagram communication strategy - Louis Vuitton and Gucci; Dior and Chanel; Prada and Burberry. With our findings, we were able to associate these luxury brands with the core dimensions of brand coolness. Implications of these findings are discussed with future research directions suggested.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
