    Simulated emergence of cyclic sexual-asexual reproduction

    Motivated by the cyclic pattern of reproductive regimes observed in some species of green flies (``{\it aphids}''), we simulate the evolution of a population enduring harsh seasonal conditions for survival. The reproductive regime of each female is also seasonal in principle and genetically acquired, and can mutate for each newborn with some small probability. The results show a sharp transition at a critical value of the survival probability in the winter, between a reproductive regime in the fall that is predominantly sexual, for low values of this probability, or asexual, for high values.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, requires RevTe

    The first analytical expression to estimate photometric redshifts suggested by a machine

    We report the first analytical expression purely constructed by a machine to determine photometric redshifts (zphotz_{\rm phot}) of galaxies. A simple and reliable functional form is derived using 41,21441,214 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10 (SDSS-DR10) spectroscopic sample. The method automatically dropped the uu and zz bands, relying only on gg, rr and ii for the final solution. Applying this expression to other 1,417,1811,417,181 SDSS-DR10 galaxies, with measured spectroscopic redshifts (zspecz_{\rm spec}), we achieved a mean ⟨(zphot−zspec)/(1+zspec)⟩≲0.0086\langle (z_{\rm phot} - z_{\rm spec})/(1+z_{\rm spec})\rangle\lesssim 0.0086 and a scatter σ(zphot−zspec)/(1+zspec)≲0.045\sigma_{(z_{\rm phot} - z_{\rm spec})/(1+z_{\rm spec})}\lesssim 0.045 when averaged up to z≲1.0z \lesssim 1.0. The method was also applied to the PHAT0 dataset, confirming the competitiveness of our results when faced with other methods from the literature.     Vorton Formation

    In this paper we present the first analytic model for vorton formation. We start by deriving the microscopic string equations of motion in Witten's superconducting model, and show that in the relevant chiral limit these coincide with the ones obtained from the supersonic elastic models of Carter and Peter. We then numerically study a number of solutions of these equations of motion and thereby suggest criteria for deciding whether a given superconducting loop configuration can form a vorton. Finally, using a recently developed model for the evolution of currents in superconducting strings we conjecture, by comparison with these criteria, that string networks formed at the GUT phase transition should produce no vortons. On the other hand, a network formed at the electroweak scale can produce vortons accounting for up to 6% of the critical density.     Marianus Scholasticus’ APl 201. A Christian rewriting of Eros from Justin II and Sophia’s reign

    The aim of this paper is to perform a deep analysis of APl 201, a fi ve-couplet epigram ascribed in all manuscripts to the almost unknown Marianus Scholasticus. When describing a work of art also unidentifi able, the poet progressively transforms the Eros he (probably) sees in the image of the Christian saviour, by means of a cautious wordplay and a symbolic re-signifi cation of the pagan attributes of that god. Furthermore, some connections between Marianus’ other epigrams and the reign of Justin II and his wife Sophia’s, particularly the last one, come to suggest a commissioned relation of the poet with the imperial couple, in relation to an intentional advertising propaganda that aimed to promote both of them to icons of orthodoxy in the second half of the sixth century AD
