Face pairing graphs and 3-manifold enumeration

The face pairing graph of a 3-manifold triangulation is a 4-valent graph denoting which tetrahedron faces are identified with which others. We present a series of properties that must be satisfied by the face pairing graph of a closed minimal P^2-irreducible triangulation. In addition we present constraints upon the combinatorial structure of such a triangulation that can be deduced from its face pairing graph. These results are then applied to the enumeration of closed minimal P^2-irreducible 3-manifold triangulations, leading to a significant improvement in the performance of the enumeration algorithm. Results are offered for both orientable and non-orientable triangulations.Comment: 30 pages, 57 figures; v2: clarified some passages and generalised the final theorem to the non-orientable case; v3: fixed a flaw in the proof of the conical face lemm

Kinetic step bunching during surface growth

We study the step bunching kinetic instability in a growing crystal surface characterized by anisotropic diffusion. The instability is due to the interplay between the elastic interactions and the alternation of step parameters. This instability is predicted to occur on a vicinal semiconductor surface Si(001) or Ge(001) during epitaxial growth. The maximal growth rate of the step bunching increases like F4F^{4}, where FF is the deposition flux. Our results are complemented with numerical simulations which reveals a coarsening behavior on the long time for the nonlinear step dynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR

Twisted Electromagnetic Modes and Sagnac Ring-Lasers

A new approximation scheme, designed to solve the covariant Maxwell equations inside a rotating hollow slender conducting cavity (modelling a ring-laser), is constructed. It is shown that for well-defined conditions there exist TE and TM modes with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cavity. A twisted mode spectrum is found to depend on the integrated Frenet torsion of the cavity and this in turn may affect the Sagnac beat frequency induced by a non-zero rotation of the cavity. The analysis is motivated by attempts to use ring-lasers to measure terrestrial gravito-magnetism or the Lense-Thirring effect produced by the rotation of the Earth.Comment: LaTeX 31 pages, 3 Figure

Shocked H2 and Fe+ Dynamics in the Orion Bullets

Observations of H2 velocity profiles in the two most clearly defined Orion bullets are extremely difficult to reconcile with existing steady-state shock models. We have observed [FeII] 1.644um velocity profiles of selected bullets and H2 1-0 S(1) 2.122um velocity profiles for a series of positions along and across the corresponding bow-shaped shock fronts driven into the surrounding molecular cloud. Integrated [FeII] velocity profiles of the brightest bullets are consistent with theoretical bow shock predictions. However, observations of broad, singly-peaked H2 1-0 S(1) profiles at a range of positions within the most clearly resolved bullet wakes are not consistent with molecular shock modelling. A uniform, collisionally broadened background component which pervades the region in both tracers is inconsistent with fluorescence due to the ionizing radiation of the Trapezium stars alone.Comment: 20 pages including 18 figures, published in MNRA

Effect of step stiffness and diffusion anisotropy on the meandering of a growing vicinal surface

We study the step meandering instability on a surface characterized by the alternation of terraces with different properties, as in the case of Si(001). The interplay between diffusion anisotropy and step stiffness induces a finite wavelength instability corresponding to a meandering mode. The instability sets in beyond a threshold value which depends on the relative magnitudes of the destabilizing flux and the stabilizing stiffness difference. The meander dynamics is governed by the conserved Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, which display spatiotemporal coarsening.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. (February 2006

3D MHD Modeling of the Gaseous Structure of the Galaxy: Synthetic Observations

We generated synthetic observations from the four-arm model presented in Gomez & Cox (2004) for the Galactic ISM in the presence of a spiral gravitational perturbation. We found that velocity crowding and diffusion have a strong effect in the l-v diagram. The v-b diagram presents structures at the expected spiral arm velocities, that can be explained by the off-the-plane structure of the arms presented in previous papers of this series. Such structures are observed in the Leiden/Dwingeloo HI survey. The rotation curve, as measured from the inside of the modeled galaxy, shows similarities with the observed one for the Milky Way Galaxy, although it has large deviations from the smooth circular rotation corresponding to the background potential. The magnetic field inferred from a synthetic synchrotron map shows a largely circular structure, but with interesting deviations in the midplane due to distortion of the field from circularity in the interarm regions.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Research Notes: Selecting homozygous male fertile lines from an intermating soybean population

    Get PDF
The synthesis of random-mating soybean populations and their use in recurrent selection programs was enhanced by the discovery of the male sterile genotype, ms 1 ms 1 (Brim and Young, 1971; Brim and Stuber, 1973). At some point in such a recurrent selection program, a plant breeder usually wishes to select lines for testing from one or more of the improved populations . There is a difficulty in this, however, because the progeny of every fertile plant selected from a random mating population will segregate for male sterility
