    Beyond the Walls: Conceptualizing Natural Environments as “Third Educators”

    This research examined preservice early childhood educators’ perceptions of outdoor settings and their intentions to use outdoor settings in their teaching practice. Students enrolled in an early childhood education program (n = 110) at a university in the Great Lakes region completed surveys that assessed perceptions of natural settings, intentions to use natural settings in future teaching, knowledge of the benefits of nature for children, and personal nature relatedness. Participants reported relatively high intentions to use natural settings in future teaching, as well as knowledge of the benefits of nature for children, but moderate levels of personal nature relatedness. Participants were more likely to select “maintained” settings such as parks for educational purposes, and more “natural” settings, especially those with water, for personal purposes. Knowledge of the benefits of nature experiences, the perceived difficulty in using natural settings, and personal levels of nature relatedness each significantly predicted intention to use natural settings in future teaching. We recommend that teacher preparation programs provide: opportunities for students to observe and/or interact with children as they engage in unstructured play in natural environments; opportunities to engage in both structured and unstructured learning experiences in natural environments; and preparing students to provide appropriate supervision in natural environments

    A two-step parallel plate chamber with a resistive germanium anode and a two dimensional readout for the detection of minimum ionizing particles

    Abstract A parallel plate avalanche chamber specially suited for the high resolution detection of minimum ionizing particles (m.i.p.) is presented. The anode is made of a thin germanium layer with a sheet resistivity > 1 M Ω/p[ while the cathode is made of a nickel mesh having 600 line pairs/in. A chess board of pads placed behind the anode plane is used to obtain the positional information. A 100% detection efficiency, a 40 ns (fwhm) time resolution and a spatial resolution better than 140 μm (fwhm) for both coordinates have been measured

    Understanding Parental Ethnotheories and Practices About Healthy Eating: Exploring the Developmental Niche of Preschoolers

    Purpose: To understand parental ethnotheories (i.e., belief systems) and practices about preschoolers’ healthy eating guided by the developmental niche framework. Design: Qualitative hermeneutic phenomenology. Setting: Home. Participants: Participants were 20 parents of preschool-age children ages 3 to 5 years, recruited from a quantitative investigation. A majority of the participants were white, female, married, well educated, and working full time. Methods: Participants who completed the quantitative survey were asked to provide their contact information if they were willing to be interviewed. From the pool of participants who expressed their willingness to participate in the interviews, 20 participants were selected using a random number generator. In-person semistructured interviews were conducted until data saturation (n ¼ 20). Thematic analysis was performed. Results: Three themes and 6 subthemes emerged: theme 1—parental ethnotheories about healthy eating included subthemes of knowledge about healthy eating, motivations to promote healthy child development through healthy eating, and sources of knowledge about healthy eating (e.g., doctors, social media, government guidelines, positive family-of-origin experiences); theme 2—parental ethnotheories that supported organization of children’s physical and social settings included structured mealtime routines and food socialization influences (e.g., grandparents, siblings, and childcare programs); and theme 3—parental ethnotheories that supported children’s learning about healthy eating included parent–child engagement, communication, and encouragement in food-related activities (e.g., meal preparation, visiting farmer’s market, grocery shopping, gardening, cooking, baking). Conclusion: Findings advance the literature on parental practices about healthy eating. Parental ethnotheories (e.g., beliefs, motivations, knowledge, and skills) matter. Developmental niche of preschoolers (i.e., physical and social settings, childrearing practices, and parental ethnotheories) constitutes an interactive system in which ethnotheories serve as guides to parental practices. Fostering nutrition education and parent–child engagement, communication, and encouragement in food-related activities are recommended to promote children’s healthy eating in daily routines

    A microstrip gas avalanche chamber with two-dimensional readout

    Abstract A microstrip gas avalanche chamber with a 200 ÎĽm anode pitch has been built and successfully tested in our laboratory. A gas gain of 104 and an energy resolution of 18% (FWHM) at 6 keV have been measured using a gas mixture of argon-CO2 at atmospheric pressure. A preliminary measurement of the positional sensitivity indicates that a spatial resolution of 50 ÎĽm can be obtained

The anode is transparent to the fast impulse due to the collection of the multiplication electrons. A chessboard of "pads" placed behind the anode plane is used to obtain the positional information. The detector and the readout system are physically and logically separated. An overall spatial resolution of 70 μm (rms) for both coordinates has been measured

    A microstrip gas chamber with true two-dimensional and pixel readout

    A true two-dimensional ÎĽstrip gas chamber has been constructed and successfully tested. This new detector has an effective substrate thickness of less than 2 ÎĽm. An ion implanted oxide layer of 1.8 ÎĽm thickness provides the necessary insulation between the front and back plane and permits collection on the back electrodes of a large fraction of the induced charge. The back electrode signal is used to measure the coordinate along the anode strips (X-Y readout) or to provide true space points (pixel readout). Very good imaging capabilities have been obtained in both cases. A flux of 107 particles/mm2 s has been measured without significant gain loss. No charging effect has been observed after three days continuously running at a flux of 104 particles/mm2 s, while a 15% gain loss, probably due to ageing effects, has been measured after collection on the strips of a charge corresponding to the more than six years of running at the design luminosity of LHC, at 50 cm from the beam axis

    On Designing Multicore-Aware Simulators for Systems Biology Endowed with OnLine Statistics

    The paper arguments are on enabling methodologies for the design of a fully parallel, online, interactive tool aiming to support the bioinformatics scientists .In particular, the features of these methodologies, supported by the FastFlow parallel programming framework, are shown on a simulation tool to perform the modeling, the tuning, and the sensitivity analysis of stochastic biological models. A stochastic simulation needs thousands of independent simulation trajectories turning into big data that should be analysed by statistic and data mining tools. In the considered approach the two stages are pipelined in such a way that the simulation stage streams out the partial results of all simulation trajectories to the analysis stage that immediately produces a partial result. The simulation-analysis workflow is validated for performance and effectiveness of the online analysis in capturing biological systems behavior on a multicore platform and representative proof-of-concept biological systems. The exploited methodologies include pattern-based parallel programming and data streaming that provide key features to the software designers such as performance portability and efficient in-memory (big) data management and movement.     Development of Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) Method for Quantification of Broccoli Sulforaphane

Available from Springer via the DOI in this record. The data that support the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.Sulforaphane (SFN) is an isothiocyanate and the product of the hydrolysis of glucoraphanin (GRA) by myrosinase. Broccoli is one of the rich sources of GRA and thus SFN. SFN possess a wide range of bioactivities and is considered an anti-cancer phytochemical. Most of the current common methods used to quantify SFN are based on high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detection (DAD) — also known as HPLC-DAD. Although this technique has shown encouraging results, the detection of SFN by DAD is relatively weak and affected by high interference of sample matrices. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method in which SFN is identified by molecular mass to give more accurate results. The developed method demonstrated a highly reproducible retention time (7.204 ± 0.008 min), producing a sharp, symmetrical and well-defined sulforaphane peak in standard and test samples. The most dominant ion of sulforaphane in the pure and test samples was 178 m/z ([M + H]^+). In terms of linearity, the calibration curve had a coefficient of determination (R^2) of 0.9963. The limit of detection of this method is 1.3 ng/mL, and the limit of quantification is 3.9 ng/mL, indicating high sensitivity. The uniformity of peak shape and retention time in both pure and test samples were the same suggesting excellent selectivity.     Attachment Predicts College Students’ Knowledge, Attitudes, and Skills for Working with Infants, Toddlers, and Families

    Research Findings:Adults’ attitudes about attachment relationships are central to how they perceive and respond to children. However, little is known about how attachment styles are related to teachers’ attitudes toward and interactions with infants and toddlers. From a survey of 207 students taking early childhood (EC) courses at 4 U.S. universities, we report relations among students’ attachment styles and their (a) career goals, (b) attitudes about caring for and educating infants and young children, and (c) interaction skills for responding in developmentally supportive ways. Overall, attachment security was positively associated with career goals focused on working with younger children, knowledge about infant/toddler development, attitudes that acknowledge the importance of adult support in children’s development, and developmentally supportive interaction skills. Students who scored high on attachment fearfulness minimized the importance of adults in children’s lives, minimized the importance of the early years for later learning, and endorsed strict and controlling forms of child guidance. Practice or Policy: A conceptual mediation model linking a path from attachment to caregiving skill through knowledge and attitudes is articulated.
