EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF A SCREEN-COVERED GROOVE HEAT PIPE

    Get PDF
In this research, a heat pipe with screen-covered groove capillary structure was experimentally analyzed. The heat pipe was manufactured from a copper tube with the external diameter of 9.45mm, inner diameter of      6.20mm, and a total length of 200mm. A Wire Electrical Discharge Machining, or Wire-EDM, was used to manufacture axial microgrooves in the heat pipe. A layer of phosphor bronze mesh #100 completed the capillary structure. Distilled water was the working fluid and the loading filling ratio was 60% of the evaporator volume. The condenser was cooled by air forced convection, the adiabatic section was insulated with fiberglass, and the evaporator was heated by an electrical resistor and it was insulated from the environment with aeronautic insulation. The heat pipe was tested in horizontal position, under different heat loads varying from 5 up to 30W. The experimental results showed that the screen-covered groove worked satisfactorily as a capillary structure

The aim of the study was to investigate the associations between UGT1A1*28 genotype and (1) response rates, (2) febrile neutropenia and (3) dose intensity in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer treated with irinotecan. UGT1A1*28 genotype was determined in 218 patients receiving irinotecan (either first-line therapy with capecitabine or second-line as monotherapy) for metastatic colorectal cancer. TA7 homozygotes receiving irinotecan combination therapy had a higher incidence of febrile neutropenia (18.2%) compared to the other genotypes (TA6/TA6 : 1.5%; TA6/TA7 : 6.5%, P=0.031). TA7 heterozygotes receiving irinotecan monotherapy also suffered more febrile neutropenia (19.4%) compared to TA6/TA6 genotype (2.2%; P=0.015). Response rates among genotypes were not different for both regimens: combination regimen, P=0.537; single-agent, P=0.595. TA7 homozygotes did not receive a lower median irinotecan dose, number of cycles (P-values ⩾0.25) or more frequent dose reductions compared to the other genotypes (P-values for trend; combination therapy: 0.62 and single-agent: 0.45). Reductions were mainly (>80%) owing to grade ⩾3 diarrhoea, not (febrile) neutropenia. TA7/TA7 patients have a higher incidence of febrile neutropenia upon irinotecan treatment, but were able to receive similar dose and number of cycles compared to other genotypes. Response rates were not significantly different

A SURVEY REGARDING SANITARY ASPECTS OF ROASTBEEF PREPARATION AND DISTRIBUTION IN AN ITALIAN CATERING CHAIN

In order to know the potential opportunities to bacteria’s contamination and survival in roast beef production process in a self service restaurant, were collected data, by direct observation of food handling practices and the environment hygiene. Furthermore a bacteriological survey on both raw and cooked roast beef, meat juice and kitchen environment was made. Finally, using an instant-read thermometer we investigated over the relationship between time, temperature and the number of bacteria in roast beef during the heat holding and the slicing process. Thus we demonstrated the importance of Good Manufacturing Practice (sanitation, maintenance of right temperatures, and exclusion of cross-contamination) during storage, handling and cooking. So to achieve a ready-to-eat roast beef safe for the consumers

Experimental data based machine learning classification models with predictive ability to select in vitro active antiviral and non-toxic essential oils

    Get PDF
In the last decade essential oils have attracted scientists with a constant increase rate of more than 7% as witnessed by almost 5000 articles. Among the prominent studies essential oils are investigated as antibacterial agents alone or in combination with known drugs. Minor studies involved essential oil inspection as potential anticancer and antiviral natural remedies. In line with the authors previous reports the investigation of an in-house library of extracted essential oils as a potential blocker of HSV-1 infection is reported herein. A subset of essential oils was experimentally tested in an in vitro model of HSV-1 infection and the determined IC50s and CC50s values were used in conjunction with the results obtained by gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry chemical analysis to derive machine learning based classification models trained with the partial least square discriminant analysis algorithm. The internally validated models were thus applied on untested essential oils to assess their effective predictive ability in selecting both active and low toxic samples. Five essential oils were selected among a list of 52 and readily assayed for IC50 and CC50 determination. Interestingly, four out of the five selected samples, compared with the potencies of the training set, returned to be highly active and endowed with low toxicity. In particular, sample CJM1 from Calaminta nepeta was the most potent tested essential oil with the highest selectivity index (IC50 = 0.063 mg/mL, SI > 47.5). In conclusion, it was herein demonstrated how multidisciplinary applications involving machine learning could represent a valuable tool in predicting the bioactivity of complex mixtures and in the near future to enable the design of blended essential oil possibly endowed with higher potency and lower toxicity

Este trabalho teve como objetivos analisar parâmetros microbiológicos e físico-químicos de 31 marcas de açúcares mascavos. Foram realizadas as análises microbiológicas (bactérias mesófi las totais, bolores e leveduras, coliformes totais, Escherichia coli e Salmonella) e físico-químicas (polarização, umidade, cinzas condutimétricas, cor ICUMSA, açúcar redutor, açúcar redutor total e pH).

LCrowdV: Generating Labeled Videos for Simulation-based Crowd Behavior Learning

We present a novel procedural framework to generate an arbitrary number of labeled crowd videos (LCrowdV). The resulting crowd video datasets are used to design accurate algorithms or training models for crowded scene understanding. Our overall approach is composed of two components: a procedural simulation framework for generating crowd movements and behaviors, and a procedural rendering framework to generate different videos or images. Each video or image is automatically labeled based on the environment, number of pedestrians, density, behavior, flow, lighting conditions, viewpoint, noise, etc. Furthermore, we can increase the realism by combining synthetically-generated behaviors with real-world background videos. We demonstrate the benefits of LCrowdV over prior lableled crowd datasets by improving the accuracy of pedestrian detection and crowd behavior classification algorithms. LCrowdV would be released on the WWW

The Multiple Origin of Blue Straggler Stars: Theory vs. Observations

In this chapter we review the various suggested channels for the formation and evolution of blue straggler stars (BSSs) in different environments and their observational predictions. These include mass transfer during binary stellar evolution - case A/B/C and D (wind Roche-lobe overflow) mass transfer, stellar collisions during single and binary encounters in dense stellar cluster, and coupled dynamical and stellar evolution of triple systems. We also explore the importance of the BSS and binary dynamics in stellar clusters. We review the various observed properties of BSSs in different environments (halo and bulge BSSs, BSSs in globular clusters and BSSs in old open clusters), and compare the current observations with the theoretical predictions for BSS formation. We try to constrain the likely progenitors and processes that play a role in the formation of BSSs and their evolution. We find that multiple channels of BSS formation are likely to take part in producing the observed BSSs, and we point out the strengths and weaknesses of each the formation channel in respect to the observational constraints. Finally we point out directions to further explore the origin of BSS, and highlight eclipsing binary BSSs as important observational tool.Comment: Chapter 11, in Ecology of Blue Straggler Stars, H.M.J. Is there a role of statins in the prevention of aortic biological prostheses degeneration

    Get PDF
It has been recently observed that statins might slow the progression of aortic stenosis or sclerosis. Preliminary reports suggested a similar positive effect in reducing the degeneration of aortic valve bioprostheses even though this hypothesis should be further proven and supported by new data. In this review the present evidences of the possible effects of statins in this field are discussed
