Do more banking offices mean more banking services?
An argument that recent growth in the number of banking offices (head offices plus their branches) does not necessarily mean that banking services have increased.Banks and banking - Customer services
Magnon contribution to unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance
We develop a model for the magnonic contribution to the unidirectional spin
Hall magnetoresistance (USMR) of heavy metal/ferromagnetic insulator bilayer
films. We show that diffusive transport of Holstein-Primakoff magnons leads to
an accumulation of spin near the bilayer interface, giving rise to a
magnoresistance which is not invariant under inversion of the current
direction. Unlike the electronic contribution described by Zhang and Vignale
[Phys. Rev. B 94, 140411 (2016)], which requires an electrically conductive
ferromagnet, the magnonic contribution can occur in ferromagnetic insulators
such as yttrium iron garnet. We show that the magnonic USMR is, to leading
order, cubic in the spin Hall angle of the heavy metal, as opposed to the
linear relation found for the electronic contribution. We estimate that the
maximal magnonic USMR in Pt|YIG bilayers is on the order of , but may
reach values of up to if the magnon gap is suppressed, and can thus
become comparable to the electronic contribution in, e.g., Pt|Co. We show that
the magnonic USMR at a finite magnon gap may be enhanced by an order of
magnitude if the magnon diffusion length is decreased to a specific optimal
value that depends on various system parameters.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure
Extreme ultraviolet and X-ray spectroheliograph for OSO-H
A complex scientific instrument was designed, fabricated, tested, and calibrated for launch onboard OSO-H. This instrument consisted of four spectroheliographs and an X-ray polarimeter. The instrument is designed to study solar radiation at selected wavelengths in the X-ray and the extreme ultraviolet ranges, make observations at the H-alpha wavelength, and measure the degree of polarization of X-ray emissions
EUV and X-ray spectroheliograph study
The results of a program directed toward the definition of an EUV and X-ray spectroheliograph which has significant performance and operational improvements over the OSO-7 instrument are documented. The program investigated methods of implementing selected changes and incorporated the results of the study into a set of drawings which defines the new instrument. The EUV detector performance degradation observed during the OSO-7 mission was investigated and the most probable cause of the degradation identified
Generalized Fibonacci numbers and extreme value laws for the Rényi map
In this paper we prove an extreme value law for a stochastic process obtained by iterating the Rényi map x↦βx(mod1), where we assume that β>1 is an integer. Haiman (2018) derived a recursion formula for the Lebesgue measure of threshold exceedance sets. We show how this recursion formula is related to a rescaled version of the k-generalized Fibonacci sequence. For the latter sequence we derive a Binet formula which leads to a closed-form expression for the distribution of partial maxima of the stochastic process. The proof of the extreme value law is completed by deriving sharp bounds for the dominant root of the characteristic polynomial associated with the Fibonacci sequence
Evaluating erosion from space: a case study near Uberlândia
Satellites can offer important spatial data for the assessment of soil erosion. This study was conducted to explore how satellite imagery could be used for evaluating erosion in a 10*10 km area in the Brazilian Cerrados. Products obtained from a variety of satellite sensors were analyzed for the purpose of (1) detecting erosion features; and (2) qualitatively mapping erosion risk. Erosion detection was done through visual image interpretation. Optical TerraASTER images allowed for a better detection and delineation of major gullies as ENVISAT ASAR imagery. Gully dynamics could be assessed by jointly interpreting aerial photos of 1979 and a high-resolution QuickBird image of 2003. QuickBird also allowed for the detection of smaller erosion features, like rills. Erosion risk mapping was performed for the complete study area with a simple qualitative method integrating information on slope and vegetation cover. Slope was calculated from the SRTM DEM, and NDVI, being indicative of vegetation cover, was obtained from a wet-season ASTER image. Both factors were automatically classified based on their relative susceptibility to erosion. The erosion risk map was constructed by combining both classifications with the minimum-operator. The accuracyof the map was good (75 %) when compared to field estimates of erosion risk. The method presented therefore allowed for a quick and proper indication of spatial differences of erosion risk in the study area, particularly concerning rill and sheet erosion
Photon collection from a trapped ion--cavity system
We present the design and implementation of a trapped ion cavity QED system.
A single ytterbium ion is confined by a micron-scale ion trap inside a 2 mm
optical cavity. The ion is coherently pumped by near resonant laser light while
the cavity output is monitored as a function of pump intensity and cavity
detuning. We observe a Purcell enhancement of scattered light into the solid
angle subtended by the optical cavity, as well as a three-peak structure
arising from strongly driving the atom. This system can be integrated into
existing atom{photon quantum network protocols and is a pathway towards an
efficient atom{photon quantum interface
The non-antagonistic repeated game are considered. The disturbance is able to act once the game. It changes the existing situation of equilibrium for another one. For this the second player gain decreases. The equilibrium strategies and the optimum discrete regime of the information receipt are found. It is shown that observer estimates the regime of the information receipt as the optimum or surplus regime depending on the model of reality which is used by him
