Relationship among acceleration, change of direction ability and horizontal jump performance in young athletes.
The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship among the straight acceleration capacity, the change of direction ability (CODA) and the horizontal jumping (HJ) performance in young athletes. This study involved a total of 264 young athletes aged between 8 and 16 years (10.2 ± 2.6 years; 37.5 ± 11.7 kg, 1.4 ± 0.1 m, 17.7 ± 2.4 kg·m-2). The 5 and 15 m straight acceleration capacity, the CODA in the 505 test (505) and modified agility test (MAT), the horizontal counter movement jump (HCMJ) and the horizontal arm swing counter movement jump (HCMJAS) were assessed. The relationship between acceleration capacity in 5 m and CODA (505: r = 0.54, p 0.05) were more consistent than the association among 15 m test and CODA or HJ. The association between MAT test and HJ (HCMJ: r = -0.73, p <0.01; HCMJAS: r = -0.74, p <0.01) was higher than the relationship between 505 test and HCMJ (r = -0.63, p <0.01) or 505 test and HCMJAS (r = -0.61, p <0.01). The type, the duration and the nature of these field tests determine the associations among different motor skills.
Enhancing maternal sensitivity in contexts of urban extreme poverty in Sierra Leone: a pilot study
This pilot study presents preliminary data on the efficacy of Strong Bonds, Strong Pikin (SBSP), a brief intervention program that aims to enhance sensitivity among mothers who care for their preschool children in a slum settlement in Freetown (Sierra Leone). SBSP adapts principles of attachment theory to intervention within a non-Western cultural setting, where families suffer from extreme poverty. A combination of psychoeducation, group work, video-feedback, and storytelling defines the methodology of the program. Maternal sensitivity, parenting stress, and the use of violent discipline practices were measured before (pretest) and after the intervention (posttest) in a sample of 43 mothers who participated in the program. Analyses showed a significant increase in observed maternal sensitivity, as well as a decrease in mother-reported parenting stress, child problems, and use of violent discipline practices from pretest to posttest. These results are discussed in terms of the potential value of culturally sensitive, attachment-centered interventions with caregivers who raise their children in non-Western settings affected by economic vulnerability.Education and Child Studie
Background. To describe influenza activity during the
2009-2010 pandemic in Navarre and compare it to previous seasons.
Methods. An analysis was made of all influenza-like illness cases reported in primary care and all the virological confirmations made in patients in primary care and in
hospitals of Navarre between week 21 of 2009 and week
20 of 2010.
Results. Influenza 2009 H1N1 virus was detected in Navarre between week 23 of 2009 and week 2 of 2010, a period
when 39 medically diagnosed cases of influenza-like illness per 1,000 inhabitants were registered. The epidemic
threshold was surpassed in two periods, with a peak in
July and a greater one in November. The greatest incidence was reached in children aged between 5 and 14 years
(121 per thousand), followed by the group of under fives.
There were 224 hospitalisations (36 per 100,000 inhabitants) with confirmation of influenza 2009 H1N1 virus, 8%
of whom required admission to intensive care units and
there were four deaths (0.6 per 100,000 inhabitants). The
rate of hospitalisation was greater amongst children under
five (163 per 100,000 inhabitants), while the probability of
referral to intensive care increased with age.
Conclusion. In spite of not having a specific vaccine available until the season was very well advanced, influenza
2009 H1N1 virus produced a wave of cases with similar
incidence to those of other seasons and its repercussion
in hospitalisations and serious cases was moderate
