    DIFFERENT DATA JOINING AS A BASIC MODEL FOR HBIM – A CASE PROJECT ST. PATALEIMON IN SKOPJE

    H-BIM (Heritage Building Information Modelling) is principle and system of use of historic buildings that can be used for the management, reconstruction or renovation and restoration of monuments. It is a set of geometric and descriptive information about a building. In the last decade, several historical objects were documented using modern methods, mainly advanced photogrammetrical and laser technologies, for a wide range of users to get benefits from economically, safety, presentation, and life cycle management of historical buildings. The rapid development in geomatics is possible thanks to advanced technologies of data capturing, sufficient capacity of computer technology and transmission and information networks. The most used technologies are terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), personal laser scanning (PLS) or mobile mapping systems (MMS), terrestrial or aerial drone based close-range digital photogrammetry (using SfM – structure from motion technology and MVS – multi view stereo). Today’s modern advanced technologies allow geometrical and textural data collection within a few centimetres’ accuracy outside and inside infrastructure by various methods of PLS, photogrammetrical SfM and TLS. In terms of object visualisation, VR or AR (virtual or augmented reality) technology is proving to be suitable. The following text discusses the use of geomatics technologies for the creation of H-BIM on the example of a cultural monument in Skopje, North Macedonia, including visualization in virtual reality (VR)

    Quantitative copper measurement in oxidized p-type silicon wafers using microwave photoconductivity decay

    We propose a method to measure trace copper contamination in p-type silicon using the microwave photoconductivity decay (μ-PCD) technique. The method is based on the precipitation of interstitial copper, activated by high-intensity light, which results in enhanced minority carrier recombination activity. We show that there is a quantitative correlation between the enhanced recombination rate and the Cu concentration by comparing μ-PCD measurements with transient ion drift and total reflection x-ray fluorescence measurements. The results indicate that the method is capable of measuring Cu concentrations down to 10exp10cm−3. There are no limitations to wafer storage time if corona charge is used on the oxidized wafer surfaces as the charge prevents copper outdiffusion. We briefly discuss the role of oxide precipitates both in the copperprecipitation and in the charge carrier recombination processes.Peer reviewe

    Serum hyaluronic acid as a potential marker with a predictive value for further radiographic progression of hand osteoarthritis

    SummaryObjectiveTo compare serum levels of hyaluronic acid (HA) between patients with erosive and non-erosive hand osteoarthritis (HOA), and investigate its association with morphological changes and radiographic progression over 2 years.MethodsFifty-five women with erosive and 33 women with non-erosive HOA were included in this study. All underwent clinical examination, which included assessment of pain, swelling, deformity and deviation of small hand joints and completed health assessment questionnaires. Serum levels of HA were measured by ELISA. Three-phase bone scintigraphy was performed at baseline. Radiographs of both hands were performed at baseline and after 2 years and scored according Kallman grading scale.ResultsSerum levels of HA were significantly higher in patients with erosive than with non-erosive HOA (P<0.01). It correlated significantly with the number of hand joints with deviations and deformities. HA adjusted for age and disease duration significantly correlated with radiographs at baseline and after 2 years in all patients with HOA (r=0.560 and r=0.542, P<0.01 for both correlations). Although there was an association between HA and radiographic score in erosive disease, after adjustment for confounders it remained no longer significant. HA adjusted for confounders correlated significantly with the late phase in all patients with HOA (r=0.412, P<0.01) and in patients with erosive disease (r=0.320, P<0.05).ConclusionHA is increased in patients with erosive HOA and could be proposed as a surrogate marker with a predictive value for further radiographic progression of HOA in general. Further investigation is necessary to confirm these results

    Traditions in spider monkeys are biased towards the social domain

    Cross-site comparison studies of behavioral variation can provide evidence for traditions in wild species once ecological and genetic factors are excluded as causes for cross-site differences. These studies ensure behavior variants are considered within the context of a species' ecology and evolutionary adaptations. We examined wide-scale geographic variation in the behavior of spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) across five long-term field sites in Central America using a well established ethnographic cross-site survey method. Spider monkeys possess a relatively rare social system with a high degree of fission-fusion dynamics, also typical of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and humans (Homo sapiens). From the initial 62 behaviors surveyed 65% failed to meet the necessary criteria for traditions. The remaining 22 behaviors showed cross-site variation in occurrence ranging from absent through to customary, representing to our knowledge, the first documented cases of traditions in this taxon and only the second case of multiple traditions in a New World monkey species. Of the 22 behavioral variants recorded across all sites, on average 57% occurred in the social domain, 19% in food-related domains and 24% in other domains. This social bias contrasts with the food-related bias reported in great ape cross-site comparison studies and has implications for the evolution of human culture. No pattern of geographical radiation was found in relation to distance across sites.     Loss of HDAC5 impairs memory function : implications for Alzheimer&apos;s disease

    Epigenetic mechanisms such as histone-acetylation have been implicated with learning and memory and are believed to contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Histone-deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors were shown to exhibit neuroprotective and neurodegenerative properties in AD animal models, and targeting HDACs appears to be a promising therapeutic strategy for brain diseases. The role of the distinct HDAC proteins in the adult brain is, however, not well understood and so far only pan-HDAC inhibitors have been tested in preclinical settings. Understanding the role of individual HDACs in cognition and AD pathogenesis is therefore vital to develop more selective HDAC inhibitors for the treatment of AD. In this study we investigated the role of HDAC5 in memory function and AD pathogenesis. We show that loss of HDAC5 impairs memory function but has little impact on pathogenesis in a mouse model for amyloid pathology. Our data reveals a novel role of HDAC5 in memory consolidation and shows that future approaches to develop more selective HDAC inhibitors for the treatment of AD should avoid targeting HDAC5

    Assessing the ability of MODIS EVI to estimate terrestrial ecosystem gross primary production of multiple land cover types

    © 2016 Elsevier Ltd Terrestrial ecosystem gross primary production (GPP) is the largest component in the global carbon cycle. The enhanced vegetation index (EVI) has been proven to be strongly correlated with annual GPP within several biomes. However, the annual GPP-EVI relationship and associated environmental regulations have not yet been comprehensively investigated across biomes at the global scale. Here we explored relationships between annual integrated EVI (iEVI) and annual GPP observed at 155 flux sites, where GPP was predicted with a log-log model: ln(GPP)=a×ln(iEVI)+b. iEVI was computed from MODIS monthly EVI products following removal of values affected by snow or cold temperature and without calculating growing season duration. Through categorisation of flux sites into 12 land cover types, the ability of iEVI to estimate GPP was considerably improved (R2 from 0.62 to 0.74, RMSE from 454.7 to 368.2 g C m−2 yr−1). The biome-specific GPP-iEVI formulae generally showed a consistent performance in comparison to a global benchmarking dataset (R2 = 0.79, RMSE = 387.8 g C m−2 yr−1). Specifically, iEVI performed better in cropland regions with high productivity but poorer in forests. The ability of iEVI in estimating GPP was better in deciduous biomes (except deciduous broadleaf forest) than in evergreen due to the large seasonal signal in iEVI in deciduous biomes. Likewise, GPP estimated from iEVI was in a closer agreement to global benchmarks at mid and high-latitudes, where deciduous biomes are more common and cloud cover has a smaller effect on remote sensing retrievals. Across biomes, a significant and negative correlation (R2 = 0.37, p < 0.05) was observed between the strength (R2) of GPP-iEVI relationships and mean annual maximum leaf area index (LAImax), and the relationship between the strength and mean annual precipitation followed a similar trend. LAImax also revealed a scaling effect on GPP-iEVI relationships. Our results suggest that iEVI provides a very simple but robust approach to estimate spatial patterns of global annual GPP whereas its effect is comparable to various light-use-efficiency and data-driven models. The impact of vegetation structure on accuracy and sensitivity of EVI in estimating spatial GPP provides valuable clues to improve EVI-based models

    Standardised cement augmentation of the PFNA using a perforated blade: A new technique and preliminary clinical results. A prospective multicentre trial

    Producción CientíficaPertrochanteric fractures are a rising major health-care problem in the elderly and their operative stabilisation techniques are still under discussion. Furthermore, complications like cut-out are reported to be high and implant failure often is associated with poor bone quality. The PFNA1 with perforated blade offers a possibility for standardised cement augmentation using a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement which is injected through the perforated blade to enlarge the load-bearing surface and to diminish the stresses on the trabecular bone. The current prospective multicentre study was undertaken to evaluate the technical performance and the early clinical results of this new device. In nine European clinics, 59 patients (45 female, mean age 84.5 years) suffering from an osteoporotic pertrochanteric fracture (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fu¨ r Osteosynthesefragen, AO-31) were treated with the augmented PFNA1. Primary objectives were assessment of operative and postoperative complications, whereas activities of daily living, pain, mobility and radiologic parameters, such as cement distribution around the blade and the cortical thickness index, were secondary objectives. The mean follow-up time was 4 months where we observed callus healing in all cases. The surgical complication rate was 3.4% with no complication related to the cement augmentation. More than onehalf of the patients reached their prefracture mobility level within the study period. A mean volume of 4.2 ml of cement was injected. We did not find any cut-out, cut through, unexpected blade migration, implant loosening or implant breakage within the study period. Our findings lead us to conclude that the standardised cement augmentation using the perforated blade for pertrochanteric fracture fixation enhances the implant anchorage within the head–neck fragment and leads to good functional results

    Education as Risk Factor of Mild Cognitive Impairment:The Link to the Gut Microbiome

    Background: With differences apparent in the gut microbiome in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia, and risk factors of dementia linked to alterations of the gut microbiome, the question remains if gut microbiome characteristics may mediate associations of education with MCI. Objectives: We sought to examine potential mediation of the association of education and MCI by gut microbiome diversity or composition. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Luxembourg, the Greater Region (surrounding areas in Belgium, France, Germany). Participants: Control participants of the Luxembourg Parkinson’s Study. Measurements: Gut microbiome composition, ascertained with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Differential abundance, assessed across education groups (0–10, 11–16, 16+ years of education). Alpha diversity (Chao1, Shannon and inverse Simpson indices). Mediation analysis with effect decomposition was conducted with education as exposure, MCI as outcome and gut microbiome metrics as mediators. Results: After exclusion of participants below 50, or with missing data, n=258 participants (n=58 MCI) were included (M [SD] Age=64.6 [8.3] years). Higher education (16+ years) was associated with MCI (Odds ratio natural direct effect=0.35 [95% CI 0.15–0.81]. Streptococcus and Lachnospiraceae-UCG-001 genera were more abundant in higher education. Conclusions: Education is associated with gut microbiome composition and MCI risk without clear evidence for mediation. However, our results suggest signatures of the gut microbiome that have been identified previously in AD and MCI to be reflected in lower education and suggest education as important covariate in microbiome studies

    beta-Lactamase can function as a reporter of bacterial protein export during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection of host cells

    Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an intracellular pathogen that is able to avoid destruction by host immune defenses. Exported proteins of M. tuberculosis, which include proteins localized to the bacterial surface or secreted into the extracellular environment, are ideally situated to interact with host factors. As a result, these proteins are attractive candidates for virulence factors, drug targets, and vaccine components. Here we describe a new β-lactamase reporter system capable of identifying exported proteins of M. tuberculosis during growth in host cells. Because β-lactams target bacterial cell wall synthesis, β-lactamases must be exported beyond the cytoplasm to protect against these drugs. When used in protein fusions, β-lactamase can report on the subcellular location of another protein as measured by protection from β-lactam antibiotics. Here we demonstrate that a truncated TEM-1 β-lactamase lacking a signal sequence for export (‘BlaTEM-1) can be used in this manner directly in a mutant strain of M. tuberculosis lacking the major β-lactamase, BlaC. The ‘BlaTEM-1 reporter conferred β-lactam resistance when fused to both Sec and Tat export signal sequences. We further demonstrate that β-lactamase fusion proteins report on protein export while M. tuberculosis is growing in THP-1 macrophage-like cells. This genetic system should facilitate the study of proteins exclusively exported in the host environment by intracellular M. tuberculosis
