    Access to cultural content should be offered by several services available by default. If access services are thought, and budgeted, in the production phase, they are better integrated, and cultural content can be enjoyed by all patrons. How to integrate access services in the production of any cultural good relays on education. Until accessibility enters the syllabus in primary and secondary education curricula, and also in higher education, much work needs to be done. Until such a time when accessibility is normalized as a must-carry requirement, the work of experts in media accessibility will be needed to add accessibility in postproduction stages. The main focus of the chapter is training in postproduction accessibility. The enterprise is looked from many angles, but in all cases putting the end user at the center to understand their needs and expectations. To illustrate our approach to the subject, three European projects funded under the Erasmus + scheme will be used as examples: ACT (Accessible Culture and Training), ADLAB PRO (field of audio description), and ILSA (Interlingual Live Subtitling for Access

Corruption, porous border and lack of government in the neighboring Somali, have made Kenya a potential target for terrorists’.The advancement in technology has brought a new era in criminal activities where Online Social Networks such as Twitter,Facebook has driven the increase use of the internet by criminal organizations and their supporters for a wide range of purposes including recruitment, financing, propaganda, incitement and gathering and dissemination of information for criminal activities such as threats, incitement to imminent violence, harassing speech, libelous speech etc.Although the Kenya government improved its ability to fight terrorism the changing pattern of terrorist activities, human errors and delayed crime analyses have given criminals more time to destroy evidence and escape arrest.The main objective is to test and validate a technique that can be used to establish crime patterns associated with terrorist activities using sentiment information deduced from twitter data.The data collected will then be used as features for training and development of the algorithm which will then be used to carry out real time mapping of terrorist activities.     Accessible opera : overcoming linguistic and sensorial barriers

    The desire to make media available for all has been rapidly accepted and implemented by most European countries. Opera, as one of the many audiovisual representations, also falls under the category of production which needs to be made accessible and this article aims to analyse how opera has gone through a complete transformation to become a cultural event for all, overcoming not only linguistic but also sensorial barriers. The first part of the article analyses the various forms of translation associated with opera and the main challenges they entail. The second presents different systems used to make opera accessible to the sensorially challenged, highlighting their main difficulties. Examples from research carried out at the Barcelona's Liceu opera house are presented to illustrate various modalities, especially audio description. All in all, it is our aim to show how translated-related processes have made it possible to open opera to a wider audience despite some initial reluctance

    The thermal denaturation of DNA studied with neutron scattering

    The melting transition of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), whereby the strands of the double helix structure completely separate at a certain temperature, has been characterized using neutron scattering. A Bragg peak from B-form fibre DNA has been measured as a function of temperature, and its widths and integrated intensities have been interpreted using the Peyrard-Bishop-Dauxois (PBD) model with only one free parameter. The experiment is unique, as it gives spatial correlation along the molecule through the melting transition where other techniques cannot.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Thermal denaturation of A-DNA

    The DNA molecule can take various conformational forms. Investigations focus mainly on the so-called ‘B-form’, schematically drawn in the famous paper by Watson and Crick [1]. This is the usual form of DNA in a biological environment and is the only form that is stable in an aqueous environment. Other forms, however, can teach us much about DNA. They have the same nucleotide base pairs for ‘building blocks’ as B-DNA, but with different relative positions, and studying these forms gives insight into the interactions between elements under conditions far from equilibrium in the B-form. Studying the thermal denaturation is particularly interesting because it provides a direct probe of those interactions which control the growth of the fluctuations when the ‘melting’ temperature is approached. Here we report such a study on the ‘A-form’ using calorimetry and neutron scattering. We show that it can be carried further than a similar study on B-DNA, requiring the improvement of thermodynamic models for DNA

    Terminological challenges in the translation of science documentaries: a case-study

    This article aims to describe some of the main terminological problems audiovisual translators have to face when dealing with the translation of science documentaries, specifically in the English-Catalan combination. The first section of the article presents some theoretical concepts which underlie this research and which are taken, for the most part, from Cabré's Communicative Theory of Terminology. Then, specific terminological problems audiovisual translators have to solve are described using the data provided by a corpus of four science documentaries lasting approximately 50 minutes each. These challenges include identifying a term, understanding a term, finding the right equivalent, dealing with the absence of an adequate equivalent, solving denominative variations, choosing between in vivo and in vitro terminology, and overcoming mistranscriptions

    Dealing with objects in audio description, and particularly with those objects that have a clear designer imprint or branding, is a complex matter when a brand name is part of the scene in a film. Deciding whether to describe or not, and how, becomes more than a technical matter that depends on text–image synchronization: it is a complex decision-making process comparable to other forms of audiovisual translation that needs to be approached as a paradigmatic example of intersemiotic translation. Dávila-Montes and Orero address the audio description of branded objects in movies, and their intersemiotic translation from images to spoken words, a complex issue that may harbour additional insights into topics of a wider scope

    Variations on the Pear Tree Experiment : different variables, new results?

    Inspired by the Pear Stories Project, the Pear Tree Project has investigated how different cultures and languages describe the same film in order to apply its findings to audio description (AD). Participants from different countries were asked to "write down what they saw" in a controlled setting. This article proposes an alternative experiment, also based on the original Pear Stories Project, which aims to shed light on two issues: how different describer profiles (translation students with AD training/without AD training) and different instructions concerning the target audience profiles (blind/non-blind) could alter the final production. The results are analysed in this paper, taking into account the elements covered in the original Pear Stories Project as well as some additional elements proposed by the authors
