Electron-beam-sustained discharge revisited - light emission from combined electron beam and microwave excited argon at atmospheric pressure
A novel kind of electron beam sustained discharge is presented in which a
12keV electron beam is combined with a 2.45GHz microwave power to excite argon
gas at atmospheric pressure in a continuous mode of operation. Optical emission
spectroscopy is performed over a wide wavelength range from the vacuum
ultraviolet (VUV) to the near infrared (NIR). Several effects which modify the
emission spectra compared to sole electron beam excitation are observed and
interpreted by the changing plasma parameters such as electron density,
electron temperature and gas temperature.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
The effect of the rare earth elements on the hot workability of ingot iron
The effect of mischmetal and rare earth oxides on the hot workability of ingot iron in the hot-short region was studied. Thirteen heats were melted in air in a basic-lined induction furnace. All heats were thoroughly deoxidized with aluminum prior to the rare earth additions. Mischmetal was added in amounts of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 per cent. Rare earth oxides were added in amounts of 0.1 and 0.2 per cent. Temperatures were maintained at approximately 2900°F and holding intervals between mischmetal additions and pouring at two minutes. Bars were hot rolled and swaged for hot twisting in the hot-short region. Sulfur distribution was studied by sulfur printing and inclusions were studied by metallographic methods --Abstract, page 8
Extreme thermopower anisotropy and interchain transport in the quasi-one-dimensional metal Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17)
Thermopower and electrical resistivity measurements transverse to the
conducting chains of the quasi-one-dimensional metal Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17) are
reported in the temperature range 5 K = 400 K the
interchain transport is determined by thermal excitation of charge carriers
from a valence band ~ 0.14 eV below the Fermi level, giving rise to a large,
p-type thermopower that coincides with a small, n-type thermopower along the
chains. This dichotomy -- semiconductor-like in one direction and metallic in a
mutually perpendicular direction -- gives rise to substantial transverse
thermoelectric (TE) effects and a transverse TE figure of merit among the
largest known for a single compound.Comment: PRL in press, manuscript (5pp, 4 Fig.'s) and Supplementary Material
