Sensible and latent heat flux from radiometric surface temperatures at the regional scale: methodology and validation
The CarboEurope Regional Experiment Strategy (CERES) was designed to develop and test a range of methodologies to assess regional surface energy and mass exchange of a large study area in the south-western part of France. This paper describes a methodology to estimate sensible and latent heat fluxes on the basis of net radiation, surface radiometric temperature measurements and information obtained from available products derived from the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) geostationary meteorological satellite, weather stations and ground-based eddy covariance towers. It is based on a simplified bulk formulation of sensible heat flux that considers the degree of coupling between the vegetation and the atmosphere and estimates latent heat as the residual term of net radiation. Estimates of regional energy fluxes obtained in this way are validated at the regional scale by means of a comparison with direct flux measurements made by airborne eddy-covariance. The results show an overall good matching between airborne fluxes and estimates of sensible and latent heat flux obtained from radiometric surface temperatures that holds for different weather conditions and different land use types. GeneXplorer: an interactive web application for microarray data visualization and analysis
BACKGROUND: When publishing large-scale microarray datasets, it is of great value to create supplemental websites where either the full data, or selected subsets corresponding to figures within the paper, can be browsed. We set out to create a CGI application containing many of the features of some of the existing standalone software for the visualization of clustered microarray data. RESULTS: We present GeneXplorer, a web application for interactive microarray data visualization and analysis in a web environment. GeneXplorer allows users to browse a microarray dataset in an intuitive fashion. It provides simple access to microarray data over the Internet and uses only HTML and JavaScript to display graphic and annotation information. It provides radar and zoom views of the data, allows display of the nearest neighbors to a gene expression vector based on their Pearson correlations and provides the ability to search gene annotation fields. CONCLUSIONS: The software is released under the permissive MIT Open Source license, and the complete documentation and the entire source code are freely available for download from CPAN
Modulating terrestrial impacts from Oort cloud comets by the adiabatically changing galactic tides
Time modulation of the flux of new Jupiter-dominated Oort cloud comets is the subject of interest here. The major perturbation of these comets during the present epoch is due to the tidal field of the relatively smooth distribution of matter in the galactic disk. A secondary source of the near-parabolic comet flux are stars penetrating the inner Oort cloud and providing impulses that create brief comet showers. Substantial stellar-induced showers occur approximately every 100 m.y. Less frequent (but stronger) impulses due to giant molecular clouds can also perturb comets from the inner cloud. These occur on timescales of approximately equal to 500 m.y. In contrast to these infrequent stochastic shower phenomena is the continuously varying tidal-induced flux due to the galaxy. As the Sun orbits the galactic center it undergoes quasiharmonic motion about the galactic midplane, which is superimposed on the small eccentricity, near-Keplerian motion in the plane having epicycle period approximately equal to 150 m.y. In the process the galactic tidal field on the Sun/cloud system will vary causing a modulation of the observable Oort cloud flux. We have created a model of the galactic matter distribution as it affects the solar motion over a time interval ranging from 300 m.y. in the past to 100 m.y. into the future. As constraints on the disk's compact dark matter component we require consistency with the following: (1) the observed galactic rotation curve, (2) today's flux distribution of new comets, (3) the studies of K-giant distributions, and (4) the periodicity found in the terrestrial cratering record. The adiabatically varying galactic tidal torque is then determined and used to predict the time dependence of the flux. We find that a model in which approximately half the disk matter is compact is consistent with these constraints. Under such circumstances the peak-to-trough flux variation will be approx. equal to 5:1 with a full width of 9 m.y. This variability will manifest in the terrestrial cratering record and is consistent with the observed cratering periodicity, if over half of the impacts on Earth are caused by comets or asteroids that originate in the outer Oort cloud
Relativistic theory of inverse beta-decay of polarized neutron in strong magnetic field
The relativistic theory of the inverse beta-decay of polarized neutron, , in strong magnetic field is developed. For the proton
wave function we use the exact solution of the Dirac equation in the magnetic
filed that enables us to account exactly for effects of the proton momentum
quantization in the magnetic field and also for the proton recoil motion. The
effect of nucleons anomalous magnetic moments in strong magnetic fields is also
discussed. We examine the cross section for different energies and directions
of propagation of the initial neutrino accounting for neutrons polarization. It
is shown that in the super-strong magnetic field the totally polarized neutron
matter is transparent for neutrinos propagating antiparallel to the direction
of polarization. The developed relativistic approach can be used for
calculations of cross sections of the other URCA processes in strong magnetic

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing to monitor grapevine leaf stripe disease within a vineyard affected by esca complex
Foliar symptoms of grapevine leaf stripe disease (GLSD, a disease within the esca complex) are linked to drastic alteration of photosynthetic function and activation of defense responses in affected grapevines several days before the appearance of the first visible symptoms on leaves. The present study suggests a methodology to investigate the relationships between high-resolution multispectral images (0.05 m/pixel) acquired using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), and GLSD foliar symptoms monitored by ground surveys. This approach showed high correlation between Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) acquired by the UAV and GLSD symptoms, and discrimination between symptomatic from asymptomatic plants. High-resolution multispectral images were acquired during June and July of 2012 and 2013, in an experimental vineyard heavily affected by GLSD, located in Tuscany (Italy), where vines had been surveyed and mapped since 2003. Each vine was located with a global positioning system, and classified for appearance of foliar symptoms and disease severity at weekly intervals from the beginning of each season. Remote sensing and ground observation data were analyzed to promptly identify the early stages of disease, even before visual detection. This work suggests an innovative methodology for quantitative and qualitative analysis of spatial distribution of symptomatic plants. The system may also be used for exploring the physiological bases of GLSD, and predicting the onset of this disease.
Where do long-period comets come from? 26 comets from the non-gravitational Oort spike
The apparent source region (or regions) of long-period comets as well as the
definition of the dynamically new comet are still open questions.The aim of
this investigation is to look for the apparent source of selected long period
comets and to refine the definition of dynamically new comets. We show that
incorporation of the non-gravitational forces into the orbit determination
process significantly changes the situation. We determined precise
non-gravitational orbits of all investigated comets and next followed
numerically their past and future motion during one orbital period. Applying
ingenious Sitarski's method of creating swarms of virtual comets compatible
with observations, we were able to derive the uncertainties of original and
future orbital elements, as well as the uncertainties of the previous and next
perihelion distances. We concluded that the past and future evolution of
cometary orbits under the Galactic tide perturbations is the only way to find
which comets are really dynamically new. We also have shown that a significant
percentage of long-period comets can visit the zone of visibility during at
least two or three consecutive perihelion passages.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Neutrino propagation in a random magnetic field
The active-sterile neutrino conversion probability is calculated for neutrino
propagating in a medium in the presence of random magnetic field fluctuations.
Necessary condition for the probability to be positive definite is obtained.
Using this necessary condition we put constraint on the neutrino magnetic
moment from active-sterile electron neutrino conversion in the early universe

Neutrino opacity in magnetised hot and dense nuclear matter
We study the neutrino interaction rates in hot matter at high densities in
the presence of uniform magnetic field. The neutrino cross-sections involving
both the charged current absorption and neutral current scattering reactions on
baryons and leptons have been considered. We have in particular considered the
interesting case when the magnetic field is strong enough to completely
polarise the protons and electrons in supernovae and neutron stars. The opacity
in such a situation is considerably modified and the cross-section develops
anisotropy. This has implications for phenomenon invoked in the literature to
