    The stellar host in star-forming low-mass galaxies: Evidence for two classes

    The morphological evolution of star-forming galaxies provides important clues to understand their physical properties, as well as the triggering and quenching mechanisms of star formation. We aim at connecting morphology and star-formation properties of low-mass galaxies (median stellar mass ∼\sim 108.5^{8.5} M⊙_{\odot}) at low redshift (z<0.36z<0.36). We use a sample of medium-band selected star-forming galaxies from the GOODS-North field. Hα\alpha images for the sample are created combining both spectral energy distribution fits and HST data. Using them, we mask the star forming regions to obtain an unbiased two-dimensional model of the light distribution of the host galaxies. For this purpose we use PHI\texttt{PHI}, a new Bayesian photometric decomposition code. We apply it independently to 7 HST bands assuming a S\'ersic surface brightness model. Star-forming galaxy hosts show low S\'ersic index (with median nn ∼\sim 0.9), as well as small sizes (median ReR_e ∼\sim 1.6 kpc), and negligible change of the parameters with wavelength (except for the axis ratio, which grows with wavelength). Using a clustering algorithm, we find two different classes of star-forming galaxies: A more compact, redder, and high-nn (class A) and a more extended, bluer and lower-nn one (class B). We also find evidence that the first class is more spheroidal-like. In addition, we find that 48% of the analyzed galaxies present negative color gradients (only 5% are positive). The host component of low-mass star-forming galaxies at z<0.36z<0.36 separates into two different classes, similar to what has been found for their higher mass counterparts. The results are consistent with an evolution from class B to class A. Several mechanisms from the literature, like minor and major mergers, and violent disk instability, can explain the physical process behind the likely transition between the classes.     Habitat Variation in Vernal Pool Ecosystems on Both Sides of the Strait of Gibraltar

    We studied vernal pool (VP) ecosystems along a latitudinal gradient crossing the Strait of Gibraltar in order to determine its role in the distribution of VP plant communities. We analyzed flora, vegetation, physical–chemical water parameters, and climatic data from two vernal pool areas on both the European (Iberian) and African (Moroccan) sides of the Strait. Despite the minor distance between both territories, the pools clearly differed in species composition and ecology. However, they showed a similar vegetation zonation in growth forms, including isoetid, batrachiid, and helophytic vegetation. The distribution of the plant communities was related to nutrient load, temperature, and precipitation. Water nitrate concentration was higher in Morocco, where VPs are characterized by Isoetes velata subsp. adspersa and Ranunculus saniculifolius communities. Iberian VPs had lower water nitrate content, and were characterized by Isoetes velata subsp. velata and Ranunculus peltatus communities. We think this nutrient difference is likely to be caused by the different land management regime on each side of the Strait, with more intensive agriculture in Morocco. Long-term (historical) and present-day (ecological) processes have been proposed to account for the habitat variation in vernal pool ecosystems on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar

    In the Spanish district of VaIencia an average of 15.000 Ha of vegetation are burned out every year. This actually accounts for ca. 4% of the provine's forest resources in spite of the very strong efforts being made in order to both prevent forest fires and lower in size the burned out areas. Under these circumstances, the questions which would normally be made as to the reasons for the no decrese in the affected areas are: Are there insuficient extinguishing means to be blamed for this problem? Are there more o less variable weather conditions prone to bnng about the fires? 1s it that the vegetation of the province (which in fact is the resource destroyed by fire) is exhibiting such a degree of flammability or burnability that renders the catastrophic fires unavoidable? The above are the reasons whch we are planning to look into and consider in detail in order to better understand bosh the forest fire evolution and the factors involved in such a natural element as fire, which in fact is shaping the vegetation of Mediterranean ecosystems.Cada año se queman en la provincia de Valencia una media de 15.000 hectáreas de vegetación, aproximadamente un 4% de sus recursos forestales, a pesar de los grandes esfuerzos que se realizan para prevenir los incendios forestales y para reducir las superficies quemadas. Cabe preguntarse cuáles son las razones de que estas superficies no disminuyan: ¿Se debe a insuficientes medios de extinción'? ¿Son las condiciones meteorológicas más o menos variables las que provocan que aparezcan los incendios? ¿Es que la vegetación (que en definitiva, es la que se quema) tiene tal nivel de inflamabilidad o de combustibilidad que los incendios catastróficos resultan inevitables? Son éstas las razones que se intentan analizar y estudiar para comprender mejor el fenómeno de la aparición de los incendios forestales y juzgar de manera imparcial los factores que intervienen en este elemento natural que es el fuego, que modela la vegetación de los ecosistemas mediterráneos

    Closed-Loop Two-Stage Stochastic Optimization of Offshore Wind Farm Collection System

    A two-stage stochastic optimization model for the design of the closed-loop cable layout of an Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) is presented. The model consists on a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) with scenario numeration incorporation to account for both wind power and cable failure stochasticity. The objective function supports simultaneous optimization of: (i) Initial investment (network topology and cable sizing), (ii) Total electrical power losses costs, and (iii) Reliability costs due to energy curtailment from cables failures. The mathematical optimization program is embedded in an iterative framework called PCI (Progressive Contingency Incorporation), in order to simplify the full problem while still including its global optimum. The applicability of the method is demonstrated by tackling a real-world instance. Results show the functionality of the tool in quantifying the economic profitability when applying stochastic optimization compared to a deterministic approach, given certain values of failure parameters

    Levels, sources and seasonality of coarse particles (PM10-PM2.5) in three European capitals e implications for particulate pollution control

    Coarse particles of aerodynamic diameter between 2.5 and 10 mm (PMc) are produced by a range of natural (windblown dust and sea sprays) and anthropogenic processes (non-exhaust vehicle emissions, industrial, agriculture, construction and quarrying activities). Although current ambient air quality regulations focus on PM2.5 and PM10, coarse particles are of interest from a public health point of view as they have been associated with certain mortality and morbidity outcomes. In this paper, an analysis of coarse particle levels in three European capitals (London, Madrid and Athens) is presented and discussed. For all three cities we analysed data from both traffic and urban background monitoring sites. The results showed that the levels of coarse particles present significant seasonal, weekly and daily variability. Their wind driven and non-wind driven resuspension as well as their roadside increment due to traffic were estimated. Both the local meteorological conditions and the air mass history indicating long-range atmospheric transport of particles of natural origin are significant parameters that influence the levels of coarse particles in the three cities especially during episodic events

Aquests estan basats en la comparació dinàmica, és a dir, que siguin els propis experts o usuaris qui comprovin la qualitat dels fars durant una sèrie de proves de conducció. L'inconvenient d'aquesta mena d'avaluació és que resulta força costós, i la capacitat de retenció visual a curt termini de les persones no assegura uns resultats definitius. Per això, el departament de Desenvolupament Elèctric, Il·luminació i Senyalització del Centre Tècnic de SEAT, a Martorell, i el Centre de Visió per Computador de la UAB han ideat un sistema de gravació, del que després es podran visionar els fotogrames i fer-ne la comparació. És necessari però, sincronització i alineació espacial entre els fotogrames per ajustar correctament els resultats a la realitat de la conducció.La continua innovación en los sistemas de iluminación de los automóviles comporta también una mejora en los sistemas de evaluación. These assessment systems are based on dynamic comparison, i.e., experts or users themselves assess the quality of headlamps by means of different driving tests. The disadvantages of this type of assessment are the elevated cost and the fact that short-term visual retention does not guarantee definitive results. For this reason, the Department of Electrical, Lighting and Signal Development at SEAT's Technical Centre in Martorell, and Computer Vision Centre of UAB have created a recording system. The frames from these recordings will later be viewed and compared. However, first they will have to be spatially synchronised and aligned in order to adjust the results to real driving situations

    Exploiting graphlet decomposition to explain the structure of complex networks: the GHuST framework

    The characterization of topology is crucial in understanding network evolution and behavior. This paper presents an innovative approach, the GHuST framework to describe complex-network topology from graphlet decomposition. This new framework exploits the local information provided by graphlets to give a global explanation of network topology. The GHuST framework is comprised of 12 metrics that analyze how 2- and 3-node graphlets shape the structure of networks. The main strengths of the GHuST framework are enhanced topological description, size independence, and computational simplicity. It allows for straight comparison among different networks disregarding their size. It also reduces the complexity of graphlet counting, since it does not use 4- and 5-node graphlets. The application of the novel framework to a large set of networks shows that it can classify networks of distinct nature based on their topological properties. To ease network classification and enhance the graphical representation of them, we reduce the 12 dimensions to their main principal components. Furthermore, the 12 dimensions are easily interpretable. This enables the connection between complex-network analyses and diverse real applications
