    From New Order to Reformasi: Indonesian Subnational Politics in the Post-New Order Era1

    Direct local election in Indonesia has been run since the middle of 2005. It is bringing some changes, especially in political reformation. Changed election mechanism to direct election done by the society in the region. This article seen that the changes has brought some positive impacts to the society as growing increasingly broad political participation, the legitimacy of local heads becomes higher and political party roles also become important. This changed which the author said as a form of deeper democratic process to “new democracy” in Indonesia. In addition, some weaknesses also appeared, such as the booming of money politic, weaken of regional institution and the emergence of new local elites. It leads to government as a minority in the scope of the power legislative institution which act as majority

    This paper analyzes the democratization process in Malaysia by positing the role of civil society as the engine of change. The analysis in this paper differs from the views of previous scholars who argued that political protests against the government first emerged during Dr Mahathir's regime. In fact, this paper argues that the protests process started even before Malaysian independence. Although this process continues to take place, it has not brought about real democratization in Malaysia. This is because of the success of the ruling government in providing comfort and feeding the people resulting in difficulty for civil societies to convince the peoples of the need for political transformation. In this aspect, this paper discusses a new approach for political protests by civil society over abuse of power by government, that is through political protests 'from within' which is more effective in raising the people's consciousness toward political change. The paper ends with a conclusion that one of the distinguishing features of Malaysia politics that differs from other political regimes in the world is that political leaders in Malaysia never have to shed the blood of its citizens and this is the very reason that they are able to sustain their status quo until now

    Calculation of dose distribution on Rhizophora spp soy protein phantom at 6 MV photon beam energy using Monte Carlo method

    Some of the commercial solid phantoms were unable to provide a good simulation to water atlow and high energy ranges. A potential phantom from Malaysian mangrove wood family,Rhizophoraspp was fabricated with addition of Soy Protein. An Electron Gamma Sho(EGSnrc) code was used to evaluate the dose distribution on Rhizophoraspp Soy Proteinphantom at 6 MV photon beam energy.  The result of the Rhizophoraspp Soy Protein phantom was then compared with the water phantom and the solid water phantom. This study showed that the uncertainty between Rhizophoraspp Soy Protein phantom and the water phantom and the solid water phantom is less than 8 % at certain depth. These comparable results have demonstrated the potential of the Rhizophoraspp Soy Protein phantom as another option for solid phantom in dosimetry purposes.Keywords: mangrove wood; solid water phantom; water equivalent phantom; EGSnrc; depth dose

    The epifaunal marine bivalves and macrophytes in Merambong Shoal, Pulai River Estuary, Straits of Malacca

    The study was carried out to investigate the diversity of epifaunal bivalves in Merambong seagrass bed, Pulai River Estuary. The sample collection field trips started from May 2008 to July 2009, 18 transects (from six stations) have been laid perpendicularly along the elongated shoal during lowest low spring tide. A total of 15 species from 10 bivalve families were recorded throughout the study period. Young Anadara gubernaculum attached to Enhalus ecoroides showed the highest abundance throughout the seagrass bed. Veneridae is the most diverse family with four species recorded during the study followed by 2 species each for Mytilidae and Pinnidae. Negative correlation was observed between Circe scripta abundance and Ulva spp. coverage (r 2 =-0.829, P= 0.042). Station 4 (H'=1.2137; 1-D=0.5807; S=10) and Station 6 (H'=1.5279; 1-D=0.6696; S=13) have higher bivalve diversity and species richness, and are more heterogeneous compared to other stations. However, bivalve density was relatively lower in both stations 4 and 6 than the rest of the stations. The result of this study revealed that the coverage of macrophytes plays an important role in determining the density and distribution of epifaunal bivalves

    In vitro Anti-proliferative and Apoptotic Activities of Eurycoma longifolia Jack (Simaroubaceae) on HL-60 Cell Line

    Purpose: To investigate the anti-proliferative, apoptotic and differentiating activities of Eurycoma longifolia root extracts on HL-60 leukemic cells.Methods: HL-60 cells were treated with different partially purified sub-fractions (F1 – F3) derived from the resin chromatography of the crude methanol root extract of E. longifolia roots, at different doses andtime points. The anti-proliferative activity of E. longifolia was assessed via cell counting and trypan blue exclusion. Apoptosis was evaluated via Annexin-V FITC/IP and Hoechst staining. Flow cytometry and Wright staining were used to assess its differentiation activities.Results: F1 showed unremarkable growth inhibition rate while F2 and F3 showed growth inhibitory effects with median inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 15.2 and 28.6 ìg/ml, respectively. Treatment with F2 and F3 (100 ìg/ml) for 96 h increased cell death from 3.3 to 95.5 and 76.3 %,respectively. Treatment with F2 (50 ìg/ml) induced apoptosis by 14, 19.5 and 25 % after 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. No differentiation activity was observed, as indicated by absence of myeloid maturation and a non-significant CD14 positivity (p > 0.05).Conclusion: E. longifolia extract (F2) showed promising anti-leukemic activity and can be a candidate for the development of a drug for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL).Keywords: Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), HL-60 cells, Eurycoma longifolia, Apoptosis, Antiproliferation, Differentiatio

    Stress appraisal, coping, and work engagement among police recruits: an exploratory study.

    This study investigated the influence of stress appraisal and coping on work engagement levels (Absorption, Vigour, and Dedication) of police recruits. Participants were 387 men, ages 20 to 33 yr. (M = 24.1, SD = 2.4), in their last month of academy training before becoming police officers. Partially in support of predictions, work engagement was associated with Stressor control perceived, but not Stress intensity experienced over a self-selected stressor. Although the three dimensions of work engagement were explained by Stressor control and coping, Absorption was the dimension better explained by these variables. Police recruits reporting higher Absorption, Vigour, and Dedication reported using more Active coping and less Behavioural disengagement. Results showed that stress appraisal and coping are important variables influencing work engagement among police recruits. Findings suggested that future applied interventions fostering work engagement among police recruits should reinforce perceptions of control over a stressor as well as Active coping strategies

    Recently, the use of plants for the production of recombinant proteins has been well demonstrated with promising outcomes. In this study, an efficient Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Bright Yellow 2 (BY-2) cells system expressing the ectodomain of hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (eHN) protein from Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strain AF2240 was established. Transgenic tobacco BY-2 cell cultures expressing the immunogenic eHN protein were generated and the translation efficiency of eHN protein was enhanced using the 5′-untranslated region of Nicotiana tabacum alcohol dehydrogenase gene (NtADH 5′-UTR) under the control of strong cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV 35S) promoter. Transgenic lines verified by real-time PCR showed high level of eHN mRNA transcripts and immunoblotting confirmed the presence of 66 kD eHN protein. The eHN protein was stably produced in an average of 0.2–0.4 % total soluble protein. Green fluorescent protein-tagged eHN protein was expressed and localized at the cytosol of BY-2 cell. All mice receiving purified eHN protein from transgenic tobacco BY-2 cells produced specific anti-NDV antibodies. We concluded that plant made eHN elicit immune response and can serve as candidate vaccine against NDV

    This study aims to analyze the battle of Manzikert in 1071 A.D, and to examine its consequences on the Byzantine Empire. The methodology used in this article are primary sources namely manuscripts, historical records as well as secondary sources. The impact of Manzikert battle which occurred between the Byzantine Empire and the Seljuk State in 1071 A.D. indicates the powers and forces of the Byzantine Empire were destroyed economically and militarily. Actually, it is a turning point in the history of Christian-Muslim conflict. The Byzantine Empire started to set its eyes on the Catholic West to save it from dangers of the Islamic State and heathenish dangers represented by Pechenegs and Turkmen. However, it was not able anymore to defend itself after this battle. Hence, Manzikert battle increased Byzantine internal confusion and helped the Seljuk to interfere onto the Empire affairs. Finally, this study reveals that the Byzantine Empire was beginning to end from 1071 to 1204 A.D

    Effect of powdered seed of Nigella sativa administration on sub-chronic and chronic lead acetate induced hemato-biochemical and histopathological changes in Sprague Dawley rats

    Lead acetate (PbAC) toxicity can occur by either ingestion or inhalation from contaminated surfaces or from the environment. Nigella sativa is a natural product with immense pharmacological properties, which include antioxidant, antibacterial, and antianemia properties. It has been showed to counter the effect of PbAC-induced hematological and biochemical changes in short-term studies. This study hypothesized that the N. sativa (NS) administration will ameliorate the deleterious effects of chronic PbAC toxicity in rats. A total of 75 Sprague Dawley rats were divided into three groups of 25 rats, and each group was further sub-divided into five groups of five rats each. Group 1 rats (negative control) were given distilled water, group 2 (positive control; PC) were given 10 mg/kg of lead acetate (PbAC) daily, and groups 3 (T1), 4 (T2), and 5 (T3) were each given 10 mg/kg of PbAC followed by graded concentrations of powdered seeds of NS; 100, 150, and 200 mg/kg, respectively. Five rats in each group were euthanized at 30, 60, and 90 days for collection of whole blood and selected organs. Whole blood was collected after euthanized via cardio puncture and used to evaluate the complete blood profile, while plasma was used for biochemical analysis. Tissue samples of the liver and kidney were fixed with 10% buffered formalin, processed, and stained with H&E and periodic acid–Schiff (PAS) for the liver. Aggression and fear were increased in the PbAC-exposed group and absent in the T3 group. There was a lower (p < 0.05) red blood cell count (RBC), packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and lymphocyte count in the PC and T1 groups only. Biochemical analysis revealed elevated (p < 0.05) liver enzyme and creatinine levels in the PC and T1 groups on day 90 for AST and day 30 for ALT and creatinine. The level of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was higher (p < 0.05) in the PC at 30 and 60 days of sampling. Other parameters, such as WBCs, prothrombin, urea, and cholesterol, were not significant in all groups. Histopathological lesions in the liver and kidneys were more severe in the PC and T1 groups, while the T2 and T3 groups showed mild lesions resulting from N. sativa administration. There was a decrease (p < 0.05) in the total PAS-stained area signifying glycogen depletion in the PC, T1, and T2 groups at 60 days and a higher distribution of the PAS-stained areas (p < 0.05) in the T3 group. At 90 days, the PC group had a lower (p < 0.05) distribution of PAS-stained areas in comparison to the other groups. The results showed the therapeutic potential of N. sativa extract in modulating both hematological and biochemical alterations induced by chronic lead acetate administration in rats

    Analysis Air Cooling Mechanism for Photovoltaic Panel by Solar Simulator

    Measurement the outdoor efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) panels is essential, but it is not likely an exceptional circumstance at any given moment is always repeating itself. A solar simulator was designed and fabricated for the purpose of analyzing the performance of PV panel with and without an air cooling mechanism in indoor test. Twenty units of 500 W halogen lamps with build-in reflector support by the steel structure holder act as a natural sunlight. The uniformity of the solar radiation was measured in the test area. Two units of PV panel with same characteristics were experimental in three sets of uniformity of solar radiation, which are 620, 821 and 1016 W/m². The operating temperature of PV panel with an air cooling mechanism can be decreased 2-3 ˚C compared to PV panel reference. The PV panel with an air cooling mechanism can be increased in 3-7 % of maximum power output based on solar radiation. An overall method and procedure of the measurement by the solar simulator are discussed and proposed
