    Evaluation of effectiveness of various devices for attenuation of trailing vortices based on model tests in a large towing basin

    The effectiveness of various candidate aircraft-wing devices for attenuation of trailing vortices generated by large aircraft is evaluated on basis of results of experiments conducted with a 0.03-scale model of a Boeing 747 transport aircraft using a technique developed at the HYDRONAUTICS Ship Model Basin. Emphasis is on the effects produced by these devices in the far-field (up to 8 kilometers downstream of full-scale generating aircraft) where the unaltered vortex-wakes could still be hazardous to small following aircraft. The evaluation is based primarily on quantitative measurements of the respective vortex velocity distributions made by means of hot-film probe traverses in a transverse plane at selected stations downstream. The effects of these altered wakes on rolling moment induced on a small following aircraft are also studied using a modified lifting-surface theory with a synthesized Gates Learjet as a typical example. Lift and drag measurements concurrently obtained in the model tests are used to appraise the effects of each device investigated on the performance characteristics of the generating aircraft

    Statistical properties of a localization-delocalization transition induced by correlated disorder

    The exact probability distributions of the resistance, the conductance and the transmission are calculated for the one-dimensional Anderson model with long-range correlated off-diagonal disorder at E=0. It is proved that despite of the Anderson transition in 3D, the functional form of the resistance (and its related variables) distribution function does not change when there exists a Metal-Insulator transition induced by correlation between disorders. Furthermore, we derive analytically all statistical moments of the resistance, the transmission and the Lyapunov Exponent. The growth rate of the average and typical resistance decreases when the Hurst exponent HH tends to its critical value (Hcr=1/2H_{cr}=1/2) from the insulating regime. In the metallic regime H≥1/2H\geq1/2, the distributions become independent of size. Therefore, the resistance and the transmission fluctuations do not diverge with system size in the thermodynamic limit

    Predicting QSO Continua in the Ly Alpha Forest

    We present a method to make predictions with sets of correlated data values, in this case QSO flux spectra. We predict the continuum in the Lyman-Alpha forest of a QSO, from 1020 -- 1216 A, using the spectrum of that QSO from 1216 -- 1600 A . We find correlations between the unabsorbed flux in these two wavelengths regions in the HST spectra of 50 QSOs. We use principal component analysis (PCA) to summarize the variety of these spectra and we relate the weights of the principal components for 1020 -- 1600 A to the weights for 1216 -- 1600 A, and we apply this relation to make predictions. We test the method on the HST spectra, and we find an average absolute flux error of 9%, with a range 3 -- 30%, where individual predictions are systematically too low or too high.     Mammalian Sperm Motility: Observation and Theory

    Mammalian spermatozoa motility is a subject of growing importance because of rising human infertility and the possibility of improving animal breeding. We highlight opportunities for fluid and continuum dynamics to provide novel insights concerning the mechanics of these specialized cells, especially during their remarkable journey to the egg. The biological structure of the motile sperm appendage, the flagellum, is described and placed in the context of the mechanics underlying the migration of mammalian sperm through the numerous environments of the female reproductive tract. This process demands certain specific changes to flagellar movement and motility for which further mechanical insight would be valuable, although this requires improved modeling capabilities, particularly to increase our understanding of sperm progression in vivo.     Stellenbosch Wine Route wineries: Management’s perspective on the advantages and key success factors of wine tourism

    The South African wine tourism industry is currently regarded as one of the best developed in the world. However, the Western Cape still earns approximately 70% less per tourist than its rival, Napa Valley in California. Research has shown that South African wineries are not organised to derive the maximum benefit from wine tourism. An exploratory study conducted in 2009 and 2010 investigated wineries’ perceptions of wine tourism in the Stellenbosch region and identified some factors they deemed necessary for the development of a successful winery. This article presents the findings of the 2009– 2010 study. These findings confirmed international research results that demonstrate that some aspects of wine tourism are perceived to be advantageous to the winery, such as the ability to create brand awareness and opportunities to spend time with consumers, which were deemed the principal advantages of wine tourism. Certain tourism-related services and facilities are perceived to contribute to the development of a successful winery. It is recommended that wineries should capitalise on the opportunities presented by wine tourism to increase their income and develop the winery successfully.Key words: wineries, wine tourism, Stellenbosch Wine Route, key success factors, advantages and disadvantage

    Stress, coping and job satisfaction in UK academics during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Objectives. The occurrence of work-related stress is high among UK academics. This is associated with increased risk of ill-health, reduced productivity, and lower job satisfaction. These might have been exacerbated by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Social support and coping strategies have the potential to ameliorate the impact of stress but have been less explored in academics; these were explored in a cross-sectional study. Methods. Fifty academic staff were recruited via links posted on social media and through snowballing sample technique. The survey included key demographics such as age, gender, relationship status, educational attainment, known to have relationship with work-related stress. Other measures include perceived stress, social support, coping strategies and job satisfaction. Results. Moderate stress was found in UK academics. Greater impact of COVID-19 and greater use of avoidance coping were significant predictors of higher stress. Conclusion. Encouraging the use of adaptive coping strategies such as problem solving, through staff training could help to reduce stress. Future longitudinal research should examine stress and coping in academics, establishing causation, while accounting for confounders such as contract type, teaching hours, and class sizes. Stress-management interventions should account for pandemic-related stressors including high workload and isolation, as academics continue to engage in hybrid/remote working. Implication. It is important that universities put in place support systems to reduce the level of stress in academics. This could be through training and education in the use of adaptive coping strategies, such as planning and problem solving as well as support from co-workers and management; which are associated with positive psychological wellbeing

    The effect of a continuous model of correlations upon one-dimensional finite disordered quantum wires modeled by an array of delta-potentials, is analyzed. Although the model proposed is not able to include new truly extended states in the spectrum, the transport properties of a finite sample are noticeably improved due to the existence of states whose localization length is larger than the system size. This enhancement of transmission is maximized for relatively short chains.Comment: 6 pages, 18 figure
