Arsenic speciation analysis in porewater by a novel colorimetric assay
Arsenic is common toxic contaminant, but tracking its mobility through submerged soils is difficult because microscale processes dictate its speciation and affinity to minerals. Analyses on environmental dissolved arsenic (As) species such as arsenate and arsenite currently require highly specialized equipment and large sample volumes. In an effort to unravel arsenic dynamics in sedimentary porewater, a novel, highly sensitive, and field-usable colorimetric assay requiring 100 mu L of sample was developed. Two complementary protocols are presented, suitable for sub-micromolar and micromolar ranges. Phosphate is a main interfering substance, but can be separated by measuring phosphate and arsenate under two different acidities. Arsenite is assessed by oxidation of arsenite to arsenate in the low-acidity reagent. Optimization of the protocol and spectral analyses resulted in elimination of various interferences (silicate, iron, sulfide, sulfate), and the assay is applicable across a wide range of salinities and porewater compositions. The new assay was used to study As mobilization processes through the soil of a contaminated brook. Water column sources of arsenic were limited to a modest input by a groundwater source along the flow path. In one of the sites, the arsenite and arsenate porewater profiles showed active iron-driven As redox cycling in the soil, which may play a role in arsenic mobilization and releases arsenite and arsenate into the brook water column. Low arsenic concentrations downstream from the source sites indicated arsenic retention by soil and dilution with additional sources of water. Arsenic is thus retained by the Bossegraben before it merges with larger rivers
Shift in critical temperature for random spatial permutations with cycle weights
We examine a phase transition in a model of random spatial permutations which
originates in a study of the interacting Bose gas. Permutations are weighted
according to point positions; the low-temperature onset of the appearance of
arbitrarily long cycles is connected to the phase transition of Bose-Einstein
condensates. In our simplified model, point positions are held fixed on the
fully occupied cubic lattice and interactions are expressed as Ewens-type
weights on cycle lengths of permutations. The critical temperature of the
transition to long cycles depends on an interaction-strength parameter
. For weak interactions, the shift in critical temperature is expected
to be linear in with constant of linearity . Using Markov chain
Monte Carlo methods and finite-size scaling, we find .
This finding matches a similar analytical result of Ueltschi and Betz. We also
examine the mean longest cycle length as a fraction of the number of sites in
long cycles, recovering an earlier result of Shepp and Lloyd for non-spatial

Chronic dermatomycoses of the foot as risk factors for acute bacterial cellulitis of the leg: A case-control study
Objective: To assess the role of foot dermatomycosis ( tinea pedis and onychomycosis) and other candidate risk factors in the development of acute bacterial cellulitis of the leg. Methods: A case-control study, including 243 patients ( cases) with acute bacterial cellulitis of the leg and 467 controls, 2 per case, individually matched for gender, age (+/-5 years), hospital and admission date (+/-2 months). Results: Overall, mycology-proven foot dermatomycosis was a significant risk factor for acute bacterial cellulitis (odds ratio, OR: 2.4; p < 0.001), as were tinea pedis interdigitalis (OR: 3.2; p < 0.001), tinea pedis plantaris (OR: 1.7; p = 0.005) and onychomycosis (OR: 2.2; p < 0.001) individually. Other risk factors included: disruption of the cutaneous barrier, history of bacterial cellulitis, chronic venous insufficiency and leg oedema. Conclusions: Tinea pedis and onychomycosis were found to be significant risk factors for acute bacterial cellulitis of the leg that are readily amenable to treatment with effective pharmacological therapy. A Report of Two Cases of Solid Facial Edema in Acne
Solid facial edema (SFE) is a rare complication of acne vulgaris. To examine the clinical features of acne patients with solid facial edema, and to give an overview on the outcome of previous topical and systemic treatments in the cases so far published.; We report two cases from Switzerland, both young men with initially papulopustular acne resistant to topical retinoids.; Both cases responded to oral isotretinoin, in one case combined with oral steroids. Our cases show a strikingly similar clinical appearance to the cases described by Connelly and Winkelmann in 1985 (Connelly MG, Winkelmann RK. Solid facial edema as a complication of acne vulgaris. Arch Dermatol. 1985;121(1):87), as well as to cases of Morbihan's disease that occurs as a rare complication of rosacea.; Even 30Â years after, the cause of the edema remains unknown. In two of the original four cases, a potential triggering factor was identified such as facial trauma or insect bites; however, our two patients did not report such occurrencies. The rare cases of solid facial edema in both acne and rosacea might hold the key to understanding the specific inflammatory pattern that creates both persisting inflammation and disturbed fluid homeostasis which can occur as a slightly different presentation in dermatomyositis, angioedema, Heerfordt's syndrome and other conditions
Small-scale (flash) flood early warning in the light of operational requirements: opportunities and limits with regard to user demands, driving data, and hydrologic modeling techniques
In recent years, the Free State of Saxony (Eastern
Germany) was repeatedly hit by both extensive riverine flooding, as well as
flash flood events, emerging foremost from convective heavy rainfall.
Especially after a couple of small-scale, yet disastrous events in 2010,
preconditions, drivers, and methods for deriving flash flood related early
warning products are investigated. This is to clarify the feasibility and
the limits of envisaged early warning procedures for small catchments, hit
by flashy heavy rain events. Early warning about potentially flash flood
prone situations (i.e., with a suitable lead time with regard to required
reaction-time needs of the stakeholders involved in flood risk management)
needs to take into account not only hydrological, but also meteorological,
as well as communication issues. Therefore, we propose a threefold
methodology to identify potential benefits and limitations in a real-world
warning/reaction context. First, the user demands (with respect to
desired/required warning products, preparation times, etc.) are
investigated. Second, focusing on small catchments of some hundred square
kilometers, two quantitative precipitation forecasts are verified. Third,
considering the user needs, as well as the input parameter uncertainty
(i.e., foremost emerging from an uncertain QPF), a feasible, yet robust
hydrological modeling approach is proposed on the basis of pilot studies,
employing deterministic, data-driven, and simple scoring methods
Immunoblot analysis of the seroreactivity to recombinant Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato antigens, including VlsE, in the long-term course of treated patients with Erythema migrans
Objective: We evaluated whether immunoblotting is capable of substantiating the posttreatment clinical assessment of patients with erythema migrans ( EM), the hallmark of early Lyme borreliosis. Methods: In 50 patients, seroreactivity to different antigens of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato was analyzed by a recombinant immunoblot test (IB) in consecutive serum samples from a minimum follow-up period of 1 year. Antigens in the IgG test were decorin- binding protein A, internal fragment of p41 (p41i), outer surface protein C (OspC), p39, variable major protein-like sequence expressed (VlsE), p58 and p100; those in the IgM test were p41i, OspC and p39. Immune responses were correlated with clinical and treatment-related parameters. Results: Positive IB results were found in 50% before, in 57% directly after therapy and in 44% by the end of the follow-up for the IgG class, and in 36, 43 and 12% for the IgM class. In acute and convalescence phase sera, VlsE was most immunogenic on IgG testing 60 and 70%), and p41i (46 and 57%) and OspC (40 and 57%) for the IgM class. By the end of the follow-up, only the anti-p41i lgM response was significantly decreased to 24%. Conclusions: No correlation was found between IB results and treatment-related parameters.
