The role of group values in the relationship between group faultlines and performance
This study explores the moderating effects of group values on the relationship between group faultlines and performance. Faultlines occur when group members align along two or more different demographic characteristics causing a group to split into homogeneous subgroups (adapted from Lau and Murnighan, 1998). We theorize and empirically examine three group values variables: career-, change-, and task-specificity. Analyses are performed on 81 work groups from a Fortune 500 information processing firm. Two levels of performance are considered in connection with group faultlines: individual performance (performance ratings) and group performance (bonuses and stock options). Our results provide support for our model of group values, faultiness and performance
Orbit determination of space objects based on sparse optical data
While building up a catalog of Earth orbiting objects, if the available
optical observations are sparse, not deliberate follow ups of specific objects,
no orbit determination is possible without previous correlation of observations
obtained at different times. This correlation step is the most computationally
intensive, and becomes more and more difficult as the number of objects to be
discovered increases. In this paper we tested two different algorithms (and the
related prototype software) recently developed to solve the correlation problem
for objects in geostationary orbit (GEO), including the accurate orbit
determination by full least squares solutions with all six orbital elements.
Because of the presence in the GEO region of a significant subpopulation of
high area to mass objects, strongly affected by non-gravitational
perturbations, it was actually necessary to solve also for dynamical parameters
describing these effects, that is to fit between 6 and 8 free parameters for
each orbit. The validation was based upon a set of real data, acquired from the
ESA Space Debris Telescope (ESASDT) at the Teide observatory (Canary Islands).
We proved that it is possible to assemble a set of sparse observations into a
set of objects with orbits, starting from a sparse time distribution of
observations, which would be compatible with a survey capable of covering the
region of interest in the sky just once per night. This could result in a
significant reduction of the requirements for a future telescope network, with
respect to what would have been required with the previously known algorithm

Do faultlines hurt or help? exploring distance, identity, task conflict, and individual performance in diverse groups
We introduce the concept of faultline distance that reflects the extent to which subgroups formed by faultlines diverge as a result of accumulated differences across them (e.g., two members of age 20 are closer in age to two members of an opposing faultline of age 25 than of two members of age 50). We further extend faultline theory by showing how different faultline bases (information-based and social category faultlines) have differential effects on outcomes. Using a sample of 76 workgroups from a Fortune 500 information processing company, we examine the relationships between group faultlines, shared identity, work-related conflict, and multiple individual performance indicators. The results reveal that members of groups with strong information-based faultlines had high levels of performance ratings, while members of groups with strong social category faultlines had low levels of bonuses. Faultline distance further exacerbated the negative effects in groups with strong social category faultlines and reversed the positive effects in groups with information-based faultlines. A sense of strong superordinate identity among group members enhanced members\u27 performance. Finally, mediated moderation was confirmed for the groups with strong social category faultlines; such groups had low levels of conflict which then resulted in low levels of bonuses

Partial Characterization of the Calcium-Releasing Activity of Porcine Sperm Cytosolic Extracts
AbstractInjection of sperm cytosolic extracts into mammalian eggs has been shown to elicit intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) oscillations that are similar in amplitude, duration, and frequency to those observed following fertilization. Thus, to characterize the Ca2+-release component(s) in porcine sperm cytosolic extracts, a combination of fractionation techniques was used. The fraction with Ca2+releasing activity was precipitated by 50% saturating solutions of ammonium sulfate and Western blot analysis showed that the pellets contained glucosamine-6-phosphate deaminase (gpd)/oscillin, a protein which has been suggested to be the sperm's active component. Single and double isoelectrofocusing (IEF) of porcine sperm extracts generated fractions with different Ca2+-releasing activities. Fractions with maximal Ca2+-releasing activity did not contain material that was immunoreactive with antibodies against gpd/oscillin; adjacent fractions containing gpd/oscillin had no Ca2+-releasing activity. These findings were confirmed by IEF coupled with size exclusion chromatography on Superose 12 and with hydroxyapatite chromatography. These procedures predict an isoelectric point of our active component of 6.5–7.0 and a relative molecular weight ranging from 29 to 68 kDa. In summary, the data show that the Ca2+release-inducing component(s) of porcine sperm extracts can be fractionated and that gpd/oscillin is not the pig sperm Ca2+oscillogen
THE ROLE OF INTERDEPENDENCE IN THE MICRO-FOUNDATIONS OF ORGANIZATION DESIGN: TASK, GOAL, AND KNOWLEDGE INTERDEPENDENCE
Interdependence is a core concept in organization design, yet one that has remained consistently understudied. Current notions of interdependence remain rooted in seminal works, produced at a time when managers’ near-perfect understanding of the task at hand drove the organization design process. In this context, task interdependence was rightly assumed to be exogenously determined by characteristics of the work and the technology. We no longer live in that world, yet our view of interdependence has remained exceedingly task-centric and our treatment of interdependence overly deterministic. As organizations face increasingly unpredictable workstreams and workers co-design the organization alongside managers, our field requires a more comprehensive toolbox that incorporates aspects of agent-based interdependence. In this paper, we synthesize research in organization design, organizational behavior, and other related literatures to examine three types of interdependence that characterize organizations’ workflows: task, goal, and knowledge interdependence. We offer clear definitions for each construct, analyze how each arises endogenously in the design process, explore their interrelations, and pose questions to guide future research
