    We show that the string gas - a perfect fluid with the equation of state p=13ρp = -\frac13 \rho possesses rather interesing properties. In Friedmann universes its presence can can change the observable topology of the space; in the spherically symmetric spacetimes it produces rather bizzare geometries and in a way its influence on the rotation curves mimics the dark matter effects.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur

    Tunneling magnetic force microscopy

    We have developed a powerful new tool for studying the magnetic patterns on magnetic recording media. This was accomplished by modifying a conventional scanning tunneling microscope. The fine-wire probe that is used to image surface topography was replaced with a flexible magnetic probe. Images obtained with these probes reveal both the surface topography and the magnetic structure. We have made a thorough theoretical analysis of the interaction between the probe and the magnetic fields emanating from a typical recorded surface. Quantitative data about the constituent magnetic fields can then be obtained. We have employed these techniques in studies of two of the most important issues of magnetic record: data overwrite and maximizing data-density. These studies have shown: (1) overwritten data can be retrieved under certain conditions; and (2) improvements in data-density will require new magnetic materials. In the course of these studies we have developed new techniques to analyze magnetic fields of recorded media. These studies are both theoretical and experimental and combined with the use of our magnetic force scanning tunneling microscope should lead to further breakthroughs in the field of magnetic recording

    The SCUBA Bright Quasar Survey II: unveiling the quasar epoch at submillimetre wavelengths

    We present results of the first systematic search for submillimetre continuum emission from z=2, radio-quiet, optically-luminous quasars, using the SCUBA/JCMT. We have observed a homogeneous sample of 57 quasars in the redshift range 1.54) redshift. The target sensitivity of the survey (3sigma=10mJy at 850um) was chosen to enable efficient identification of bright submm sources, suitable for detailed follow-up. 9 targets are detected, with fluxes in the range 7-17mJy. Although there is a suggestion of variation of submm detectability between z=2 and z=4, this is consistent with the K-correction of a characteristic far-infrared spectrum. Additionally, the weighted mean fluxes of non-detections at z=2 and z>4 are comparable

    Mid-J CO Emission in Nearby Seyfert Galaxies

    We study for the first time the complete sub-millimeter spectra (450 GHz to 1550 GHz) of a sample of nearby active galaxies observed with the SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (SPIRE/FTS) onboard Herschel. The CO ladder (from Jup = 4 to 12) is the most prominent spectral feature in this range. These CO lines probe warm molecular gas that can be heated by ultraviolet photons, shocks, or X-rays originated in the active galactic nucleus or in young star-forming regions. In these proceedings we investigate the physical origin of the CO emission using the averaged CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) of six Seyfert galaxies. We use a radiative transfer model assuming an isothermal homogeneous medium to estimate the molecular gas conditions.     The decay of quadrupole-octupole 11^- states in 40^{40}Ca and 140^{140}Ce

    Background: Two-phonon excitations originating from the coupling of two collective one-phonon states are of great interest in nuclear structure physics. One possibility to generate low-lying E1E1 excitations is the coupling of quadrupole and octupole phonons. Purpose: In this work, the γ\gamma-decay behavior of candidates for the (21+31)1(2_1^+\otimes 3_1^-)_{1^-} state in the doubly-magic nucleus 40^{40}Ca and in the heavier and semi-magic nucleus 140^{140}Ce is investigated. Methods: (γ,γ)(\vec{\gamma},\gamma') experiments have been carried out at the High Intensity γ\gamma-ray Source (HIγ{\gamma}S) facility in combination with the high-efficiency γ\gamma-ray spectroscopy setup γ3\gamma^3 consisting of HPGe and LaBr3_3 detectors. The setup enables the acquisition of γ\gamma-γ\gamma coincidence data and, hence, the detection of direct decay paths. Results: In addition to the known ground-state decays, for 40^{40}Ca the decay into the 313^-_1 state was observed, while for 140^{140}Ce the direct decays into the 21+2^+_1 and the 02+0^+_2 state were detected. The experimentally deduced transition strengths and excitation energies are compared to theoretical calculations in the framework of EDF theory plus QPM approach and systematically analyzed for N=82N=82 isotones. In addition, negative parities for two J=1J=1 states in 44^{44}Ca were deduced simultaneously. Conclusions: The experimental findings together with the theoretical calculations support the two-phonon character of the 111^-_1 excitation in the light-to-medium-mass nucleus 40^{40}Ca as well as in the stable even-even N=82N=82 nuclei.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, as accepted in Phys.     NPK detection spectroscopy on non-agriculture soil

    Soil is a medium for plant roots to grow, absorb water and necessary solutes for growth. Soil macronutrient testing is helpful for determining the nutrients content in soil before applying fertilizer for quality and process controls of agricultural produce and soil fertility. Spectroscopy is an emerging technology which is rapid and simple has been widely used in agricultural and food analysis processes. The capability of spectroscopy to characterize material from the transmission or absorbance has been used in this paper to measure nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) content in non-agriculture soil. The paper details preliminary characterization of soil spectroscopy with a Deuterium-Halogen light source and Ocean Optic spectrometer to measure the absorbance level of the macronutrients. The extracted nutrients were mixed with the colour reagent and specific colored solution was developed. Two soil samples have been employed for the experimental characterization, which are mud flood and kaolin. The result shows that high absorbance level of N at 450 nm in wavelength, P at 750 nm for both samples. The absorbance level of K was measured high at 500nm for mud flood and 450nm for kaolin. In addition, the tested macronutrients give similar wavelength of peak absorbance level at 970 nm for both samples. For future works, the optical measurements will be implemented using visible and near infrared LED and the photodetector in order to replace the spectrometer usage for soil spectroscopy. This would lead to achieve the primary objective of this research in developing a simple and low cost spectroscopy uses light-emitting diode (LED)

    On finitely ambiguous B\"uchi automata

    Unambiguous B\"uchi automata, i.e. B\"uchi automata allowing only one accepting run per word, are a useful restriction of B\"uchi automata that is well-suited for probabilistic model-checking. In this paper we propose a more permissive variant, namely finitely ambiguous B\"uchi automata, a generalisation where each word has at most kk accepting runs, for some fixed kk. We adapt existing notions and results concerning finite and bounded ambiguity of finite automata to the setting of ω\omega-languages and present a translation from arbitrary nondeterministic B\"uchi automata with nn states to finitely ambiguous automata with at most 3n3^n states and at most nn accepting runs per word

    The Radio-to-Submm Spectral Index as a Redshift Indicator

    We present models of the 1.4 GHz to 350 GHz spectral index, alpha(350/1.4), for starburst galaxies as a function of redshift. The models include a semi-analytic formulation, based on the well quantified radio-to-far infrared correlation for low redshift star forming galaxies, and an empirical formulation, based on the observed spectrum of the starburst galaxies M82 and Arp 220. We compare the models to the observed values of alpha(350/1.4) for starburst galaxies at low and high redshift. We find reasonable agreement between the models and the observations, and in particular, that an observed spectral index of alpha(350/1.4) > +0.5 indicates that the target source is likely to be at high redshift, z > 1. The evolution of alpha(350/1.4) with redshift is mainly due to the very steep rise in the Raleigh-Jeans portion of the thermal dust spectrum shifting into the 350 GHz band with increasing redshift. We also discuss situations where this relationship could be violated. We then apply our models to examine the putative identifications of submm sources in the Hubble Deep Field, and conclude that the submm sources reported by Hughes et al. are likely to be at high redshifts, z > 1.5.Comment: standard LATEX file plus 1 postscript figure.
