Factors Influencing Choice of Major of Eastern Illinois University Students

    Get PDF
Factors influencing choice of major of Eastern Illinois University students were investigated. Qualitative reasons and positive influence of individuals by roles were measured with weighted responses. The results indicated that course content, special abilities in the field, employment opportunities, the opportunity to work with people, and the opportunity to contribute to society were ranked as most important. The roles of mother/step-mother, father/step-father, high school teacher, and college teacher were ranked as most influential. Females ranked the opportunity to work with people and the opportunity to contribute to society as the most important reasons with the mother/step-mother role as most influential. Males ranked course content as most important with the roles of mother/step-mother, father/step-father, high school teacher and college teacher most influential. Because of the small numbers of non-White respondents, further study is necessary for reliable data by racial/ethnic group

Communication through coherent control of quantum channels

A completely depolarising quantum channel always outputs a fully mixed state and thus cannot transmit any information. In a recent Letter [D. Ebler et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 120502 (2018)], it was however shown that if a quantum state passes through two such channels in a quantum superposition of different orders - a setup known as the "quantum switch" - then information can nevertheless be transmitted through the channels. Here, we show that a similar effect can be obtained when one coherently controls between sending a target system through one of two identical depolarising channels. Whereas it is tempting to attribute this effect in the quantum switch to the indefinite causal order between the channels, causal indefiniteness plays no role in this new scenario. This raises questions about its role in the corresponding effect in the quantum switch. We study this new scenario in detail and we see that, when quantum channels are controlled coherently, information about their specific implementation is accessible in the output state of the joint control-target system. This allows two different implementations of what is usually considered to be the same channel to therefore be differentiated. More generally, we find that to completely describe the action of a coherently controlled quantum channel, one needs to specify not only a description of the channel (e.g., in terms of Kraus operators), but an additional "transformation matrix" depending on its implementation.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

    Entanglement without nonlocality

We consider the characterization of entanglement from the perspective of a Heisenberg formalism. We derive an original two-party generalized separability criteria, and from this describe a novel physical understanding of entanglement. We find that entanglement may be considered as fundamentally a local effect, and therefore as a separable computational resource from nonlocality. We show how entanglement differs from correlation physically, and explore the implications of this new conception of entanglement for the notion of classicality. We find that this understanding of entanglement extends naturally to multipartite cases.Comment: 9 pages. Expanded introduction and sections on physical entanglement and localit

    Physical Computation, P/poly and P/log*

In this paper we give a framework for describing how abstract systems can be used to compute if no randomness or error is involved. Using this we describe a class of classical "physical" computation systems whose computational capabilities in polynomial time are equivalent to P/poly. We then extend our framework to describe how measurement and transformation times may vary depending on their input. Finally we describe two classes of classical "physical" computation systems in this new framework whose computational capabilities in polynomial time are equivalent to P/poly and P/log*

    Information-flux approach to multiple-spin dynamics

We introduce and formalize the concept of information flux in a many-body register as the influence that the dynamics of a specific element receive from any other element of the register. By quantifying the information flux in a protocol, we can design the most appropriate initial state of the system and, noticeably, the distribution of coupling strengths among the parts of the register itself. The intuitive nature of this tool and its flexibility, which allow for easily manageable numerical approaches when analytic expressions are not straightforward, are greatly useful in interacting many-body systems such as quantum spin chains. We illustrate the use of this concept in quantum cloning and quantum state transfer and we also sketch its extension to non-unitary dynamics.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX

    Reserve service as recovery

    Get PDF
64 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 54-64).Reservists in the Canadian Armed Forces have received little if any attention from an occupational health perspective despite the fact that many hold a full time civilian job and work part-time for the military. The purpose of the present study was to examine: A) How stressors from the civilian and Reserve job interact in predicting mental health and organizational outcomes; and B) If Reserve Service can act as a form of recovery experiences; and if so, whether or not those experiences can buffer the impact of stressors experienced in the civilian job. Results indicate that the effects of stressors remain within job in predicting job satisfaction and turnover; that recovery experienced during Reserve employment has a direct impact on strain symptoms; and that these Recovery Experiences also moderate the relationship between conflict in the civilian workplace and strain. Study implications, limitations and directions for future research are discussed
