    The Higgs System in and Beyond the Standard Model

    After the discovery of the Higgs boson particle on the 4th of July of 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider, sited at the european CERN laboratory, we are entering in a fascinating period for Particle Physics where both theorists and experimentalists are devoted to fully understand the features of this new particle and the possible consequences for High Energy Physics of the Higgs system both within and beyond the Standard Model of fundamental particle interactions.     Comment on `Glassy Transition in a Disordered Model for the RNA Secondary Structure'

    In cond-mat/9907125 the low-temperature behavior of a model for RNA secondary structure was studied. It is claimed that the model exhibits a breaking of the replica symmetry, since the width of the distribution P(q) of overlaps may converge to a finite value at T=0. The authors used an exact enumeration method to obtain all ground states for a given RNA sequence. Because of the exponential growing degeneracy, only sequences up to length L=256 could be studied. Here it is shown that, in contrast to the previous results, by going to much larger sizes as L=2000 the variance coverges towards zero, i.e. P(q) is a delta-function in the thermodynamic limit.Comment: completely rewritten, comment to cond-mat/9907125 (PRL 84, 2026

    ‘At what cost? the impact of UK long-term care funding policies on social work practice with older people’: a literature review

    Moving to a care home is a significant and often costly milestone in many older people’s lives, with considerable implications for an individual’s future autonomy, safety, wellbeing and security. Such provision has considerable financial impact both on the economy and on those required to make significant contributions to their own care. Reductions in community-based support and widespread gaps in the sustainable development of alternative options to residential care pose challenges in relation to decision making for those older people and their carers who wish to make timely plans for good quality provision. The system and process of transfer to care can also be fragmented, bewildering and involve multiple organisations and assessments, often at a time of crisis. Social Workers are key professionals in providing assessment, advocacy and planning with older people and their carers and the challenging neo-liberal policy context suggests the potential for numerous ethical dilemmas for practitioners. This paper examines themes from recent literature in the field of social work with vulnerable older people, particularly in relation to funding arrangements for residential care, examining how ethical issues in this field of social work practice are. identified and discussed. This paper presents a narrative review of relevant literature since 2010. It examines and synthesises key themes and considers how ethical issues connected to this field of social work practice are articulated

    Naturalness and Higgs Decays in the MSSM with a Singlet

    The simplest extension of the supersymmetric standard model - the addition of one singlet superfield - can have a profound impact on the Higgs and its decays. We perform a general operator analysis of this scenario, focusing on the phenomenologically distinct scenarios that can arise, and not restricting the scope to the narrow framework of the NMSSM. We reexamine decays to four b quarks and four tau's, finding that they are still generally viable, but at the edge of LEP limits. We find a broad set of Higgs decay modes, some new, including those with four gluon final states, as well as more general six and eight parton final states. We find the phenomenology of these scenarios is dramatically impacted by operators typically ignored, specifically those arising from D-terms in the hidden sector, and those arising from weak-scale colored fields. In addition to sensitivity of m_Z, there are potential tunings of other aspects of the spectrum. In spite of this, these models can be very natural, with light stops and a Higgs as light as 82 GeV.     The multifaceted nature of weight-related self-stigma: Validation of the two-factor weight bias internalization scale (WBIS-2F)

Available from Frontiers Media via the DOI in this record.Internalized weight stigma (IWS) is generally operationalized as self-devaluation due to weight in higher-weight individuals. The most commonly used measure of IWS, the Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS), was developed from an original pool of 19 items. Item selection was guided by statistical techniques based upon an a priori hypothesized unidimensional factor structure. The resulting 11-item scale mostly assesses appearance-related attitudes, fear of stigma, affect, and desire for change, all of which may be a natural response to societal weight stigma, even in the absence of self-devaluation. Items pertaining to self-blame, stigma awareness, perceived legitimacy of weight stigma, and most items pertaining to self-worth, were excluded from the final scale. It is unclear whether an a priori assumption of multi-dimensionality would have produced different results. Methods: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis of the original 19-item questionnaire was conducted in 931 higher-weight individuals. Results: A 13-item two-factor structure was identified. Factor 1 comprised seven items that could be loosely conceived as weight-related distress. Factor 2 comprised six items, all of which pertained to weight-related self-worth. Tested individually, the six items making up the self-devaluation factor were an excellent fit for the data on all fit indices. Conclusion: IWS is a multi-dimensional construct. The two-factor WBIS (WBIS-2F) provides options to explore the relationships between different aspects of IWS and upstream and downstream variables.     The task of selecting and developing a method of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) for a Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) system, is investigated in this thesis. Efficiently and accurately communicating machinery health information extracted from Condition Monitoring (CM) equipment, to aid and assist plant and machinery maintenance decisions, is the crux of the problem being researched. Challenges facing this research include: the multitude of different CM techniques, developed for measuring different component and machinery condition parameters; the multitude of different methods of HCI; and the multitude of different ways of communicating machinery health conditions to CBM practitioners. Each challenge will be considered whilst pursuing the objective of identifying a generic set of design and development principles, applicable to the design and development of a CBM system's Human Machine Interface (HMI).     The Triple Higgs Boson Self-Coupling at Future Linear e+e- Colliders Energies: ILC and CLIC

    We analyzed the triple Higgs boson self-coupling at future e+ee^{+}e^{-} colliders energies, with the reactions e+ebbˉHH,ttˉHHe^{+}e^{-}\to b \bar b HH, t \bar t HH. We evaluate the total cross-sections for both bbˉHHb\bar bHH and ttˉHHt\bar tHH, and calculate the total number of events considering the complete set of Feynman diagrams at tree-level. We vary the triple coupling κλ3H\kappa\lambda_{3H} within the range κ=1\kappa=-1 and +2. The numerical computation is done for the energies expected to be available at a possible Future Linear e+ee^{+}e^{-} Collider with a center-of-mass energy 800,1000,1500800, 1000, 1500 GeVGeV and a luminosity 1000 fb1fb^{-1}. Our analysis is also extended to a center-of-mass energy 3 TeVTeV and luminosities of 1000 fb1fb^{-1} and 5000 fb1fb^{-1}. We found that for the process e+ebbˉHHe^{+}e^{-}\to b \bar b HH, the complete calculation differs only by 3% from the approximate calculation e+eZHH(Zbbˉ)e^{+}e^{-}\to ZHH(Z\to b\bar b), while for the process e+ettˉHHe^{+}e^{-}\to t \bar tHH, the expected number of events, considering the decay products of both tt and HH, is not enough to obtain an accurate determination of the triple Higgs boson self-coupling.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figure
