    Go with the flow or seize control? Interaction principles that make games enjoyable

    A series of design principles relevant to creating graphics for games interfaces were interpreted from the work of leading interaction experts. Students studying for an MSc in Computer Games Graphics were asked to explore how the principles might improve enjoyment of a game. The graduates of the course consider visual themes and their layout; they were asked to develop graphical designs to test ideas and evaluate them within the group. The purpose of the activity was to consider how emotional responses might be improved, during game play, beyond levels of satisfaction usually associated with usability

    Transition state theory and the dynamics of hard disks

    The dynamics of two and five disk systems confined in a square has been studied using molecular dynamics simulations and compared with the predictions of transition state theory. We determine the partition functions Z and Z^\ddagger of transition state theory using a procedure first used by Salsburg and Wood for the pressure. Our simulations show this procedure and transition state theory are in excellent agreement with the simulations. A generalization of the transition state theory to the case of a large number of disks N is made and shown to be in full agreement with simulations of disks moving in a narrow channel. The same procedure for hard spheres in three dimensions leads to the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann formula for their alpha relaxation time.Comment: 1 new author, new simulations and figures, less speculation.     High resolution spectroscopy of Pluto's atmosphere: detection of the 2.3 μ\mum CH4_4 bands and evidence for carbon monoxide

    The goal is to determine the composition of Pluto's atmosphere and to constrain the nature of surface-atmosphere interactions. We perform high--resolution spectroscopic observations in the 2.33--2.36 μ\mum range, using CRIRES at the VLT. We obtain (i) the first detection of gaseous methane in this spectral range, through lines of the ν3\nu_3 + ν4\nu_4 and ν1\nu_1 + ν4\nu_4 bands (ii) strong evidence (6-σ\sigma confidence) for gaseous CO in Pluto. For an isothermal atmosphere at 90 K, the CH4_4 and CO column densities are 0.75 and 0.07 cm-am, within factors of 2 and 3, respectively. Using a physically--based thermal structure model of Pluto's atmosphere also satisfying constraints from stellar occultations, we infer CH4_4 and CO mixing ratios qCH4_{CH_4}= 0.60.3+0.6^{+0.6}_{-0.3}% (consistent with results from the 1.66 μ\mum range) and qCO_{CO} = 0.50.25+1^{+1}_{-0.25}×103\times10^{-3}. The CO atmospheric abundance is consistent with its surface abundance. As for Triton, it is probably controlled by a thin, CO-rich, detailed balancing layer resulting from seasonal transport and/or atmospheric escape.Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters, in pres

    A cross-sectional analysis of pharmaceutical industry-funded events for health professionals in Australia

    Objectives: To analyse patterns and characteristics of pharmaceutical industry sponsorship of events for Australian health professionals and to understand the implications of recent changes in transparency provisions that no longer require reporting of payments for food and beverages. Design: Cross-sectional analysis. Participants and setting: 301 publicly available company transparency reports downloaded from the website of Medicines Australia, the pharmaceutical industry trade association, covering the period from October 2011 to September 2015. Results: Forty-two companies sponsored 116 845 events for health professionals, on average 608 per week with 30 attendees per event. Events typically included a broad range of health professionals: 82.0% included medical doctors, including specialists and primary care doctors, and 38.3% trainees. Oncology, surgery and endocrinology were the most frequent clinical areas of focus. Most events (64.2%) were held in a clinical setting. The median cost per event was A263(IQRA263 (IQR A153–1195) and over 90% included food and beverages. Conclusions: Over this 4-year period, industry-sponsored events were widespread and pharmaceutical companies maintained a high frequency of contact with health professionals. Most events were held in clinical settings, suggesting a pervasive commercial presence in everyday clinical practice. Food and beverages, known to be associated with changes to prescribing practice, were almost always provided. New Australian transparency provisions explicitly exclude meals from the reporting requirements; thus, a large proportion of potentially influential payments from pharmaceutical companies to health professionals will disappear from public view
