    It Can Be Done! Planning and Process for Successful Collection Management Projects

    Many academic libraries face the challenge of decreasing the size of print collections. This paper offers perspectives on a range of activities for successful projects. At Connecticut College, W. Lee Hisle found that, with proper planning and execution, a successful Collection Management Project can be completed without substantial campus turmoil. Hisle discusses project principles, communications strategy used, data used to “sell” the project, and lessons learned. This project allowed the bookstack footprint to be reduced by one-third without loss of access of any item. Pat Tully, from Wesleyan University Library, presents some lessons learned from a last-copy weeding project that was carried out in 2011 to create space for new books and for a substantial art book collection. The project was controversial and led to a series of difficult campus discussions, but inviting faculty input into weeding decisions ultimately strengthened the understanding and trust between the faculty and the library. Pamela Grudzien and Fran Rosen discuss organizational challenges and workflow changes in Technical Services as libraries engage in large collaborative weeding and retention projects. Their libraries are part of the Michigan Shared Print Initiative (MI-SPI), a collaborative project to identify and manage a shared collection of widely held low-use monograph titles. Grudzien, from Central Michigan University, shares new workflows that incorporate retention responsibilities and discusses the development of a tool that facilitates member communication about volumes that are missing or in poor condition. Rosen shares details about a comprehensive project using MI-SPI weeding lists at Ferris State University

    Genic population structure and gene flow in the Northern Flicker (Colaptes Auratus) hybrid zone

    The Yellow-shafted Flicker (Colaptes auratus auratus) and Red-shafted Flicker (C. a. cafer) form a stable, narrow hybrid zone on the western Great Plains of North America. Allozyme data were obtained from 31 structural gene loci for 33 samples representing 246 Northern Flickers from throughout the Great Plains. Flickers were approximately equivalent to other birds in terms of proportion of polymorphic loci (P = 0.207) and average heterozygosity (H = 0.056). There was no concordant variation between plumage characters and allelic frequencies. Gene-diversity analysis indicated that 92.5% of the genic variation occurred as within-deme heterozygosity (GD = 0.925), approximately 7% occurred among individual demes (GST= 0.07), and only 0.9% occurred among major river drainages (GST = 0.009). Even less diversity was found among parental and hybrid groups (GST = 0.002). There is substantial allozymic structuring of the Northern Flicker species population, but the structuring is not associated with the hybrid zone, and there is, at most, very weak structuring into riparian zones of habitat. The electrophoretic data support the inference that gene flow among Northern Flicker populations is high (Nm = 1.9-4.4/generation). If the high gene-flow estimates are correct, then geographical selection gradients would be the most likely mechanism maintaining the narrow hybrid zone of plumage and morphometric traits

    Rank deficiency of Kalman error covariance matrices in linear time-varying system with deterministic evolution

    We prove that for-linear, discrete, time-varying, deterministic system (perfect-model) with noisy outputs, the Riccati transformation in the Kalman filter asymptotically bounds the rank of the forecast and the analysis error covariance matrices to be less than or equal to the number of nonnegative Lyapunov exponents of the system. Further, the support of these error covariance matrices is shown to be confined to the space spanned by the unstable-neutral backward Lyapunov vectors, providing the theoretical justification for the methodology of the algorithms that perform assimilation only in the unstable-neutral subspace. The equivalent property of the autonomous system is investigated as a special case

    Gapeau: Enhancing the Sense of Distance to Others with a Head-Mounted Sensor

    Human perception lacks the capabilities to accurately assess distance. The recent Covid-19 pandemic outbreak rendered this ability particularly important. Augmenting our sense of distance can help maintain safe separation from others when required. To explore how systems can help users maintain physical distance, we designed, implemented and evaluated Gapeau - a head-mounted system for augmenting the sense of distance. Our system uses proximity sensors and thermal sensing to detect and measure the distance to other people. We conducted a validation protocol, an experiment, in which we compared different feedback modalities, and an in-the-wild study to evaluate Gapeau\u27s performance and suitability for use in social contexts. We found that our system enabled users to more accurately determine whether they were maintaining a safe distance from others. Vibration and auditory feedback were found most effective and usable. Gapeau was perceived as socially acceptable. Our work contributes insights for augmented sensing systems with social relevance

    Reversal of oncogene transformation and suppression of tumor growth by the novel IGF1R kinase inhibitor A-928605

    BACKGROUND: The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis is an important signaling pathway in the growth and survival of many cell and tissue types. This pathway has also been implicated in many aspects of cancer progression from tumorigenesis to metastasis. The multiple roles of IGF signaling in cancer suggest that inhibition of the pathway might yield clinically effective therapeutics. METHODS: We describe A-928605, a novel pyrazolo [3,4-d]pyrimidine small molecule inhibitor of the receptor tyrosine kinases (IGF1R and IR) responsible for IGF signal transduction. This compound was first tested for its activity and selectivity via conventional in vitro kinome profiling and cellular IGF1R autophosphorylation. Additionally, cellular selectivity and efficacy of A-928605 were analyzed in an IGF1R oncogene-addicted cell line by proliferation, signaling and microarray studies. Finally, in vivo efficacy of A-928605 was assessed in the oncogene-addicted cell line and in a neuroblastoma model as a single agent as well as in combination with clinically approved therapeutics targeting EGFR in models of pancreatic and non-small cell lung cancers. RESULTS: A-928605 is a selective IGF1R inhibitor that is able to abrogate activation of the pathway both in vitro and in vivo. This novel compound dosed as a single agent is able to produce significant growth inhibition of neuroblastoma xenografts in vivo. A-928605 is also able to provide additive effects when used in combination with clinically approved agents directed against EGFR in non-small cell lung and human pancreatic tumor models. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that a selective IGF1R inhibitor such as A-928605 may provide a useful clinical therapeutic for IGF pathway affected tumors and warrants further investigation

    Extremely Low Birth Weight Predisposes to Impaired Renal Health: A Pooled Analysis

    Background: A number of studies examined the association between preterm delivery and kidney size and function later in life. However, the number of cases in published cohort studies is low. This study was aimed at performing a multicenter collaboration to pool data to obtain more accurate results to quantify the extent of renal impairment in former extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1,000 g) children. Methodology: We performed a subject-level metaanalysis to pool data from Cracow (64 cases/34 controls) and Leuven (93 cases/87 controls). We assessed and analyzed cystatin C, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), ultrasound kidney length, and blood pressure (BP) in 11-year-old ELBW children compared with controls born at term. The prevalence of hypertension (HT) and prehypertension (preHT) in both groups was also analyzed. Results: The study group comprised 157 former ELBW children (gestational age 23–33 weeks and birth weight 430–1,000 g) and 123 children born at term. Former ELBW children had lower mean eGFR (100.62 ± 16.53 vs. 111.89 ± 15.26 mL/min/1.73 m2; p < 0.001), smaller absolute kidney length (8.56 ± 0.78 vs. 9.008 ± 0.73 cm; <0.001), and higher systolic (111.8 ± 9.8 vs. 107.2 ± 9.07 mm Hg; p = 0.01) and diastolic (68.6 ± 6.8 vs. 66.3 ± 7.7 mm Hg; p = 0.03) BP. Smaller renal size in former ELBW children was positively associated with lower birth weight, shorter gestational age, and severity of perinatal complications (intraventricular hemorrhage, length of stay, mechanical ventilation, and oxygen therapy). Conclusion: ELBW is associated with lower eGFR and a high frequency of preHT and HT

    c-MET Protects Breast Cancer Cells from Apoptosis Induced by Sodium Butyrate

    Sodium Butyrate (NaBu) is regarded as a potential reagent for cancer therapy. In this study, a specific breast cancer cell population that is resistant NaBu treatment was identified. These cells possess cancer stem cell characters, such as the capability of sphere formation in vitro and high tumor incident rate (85%) in mouse model. Forty percent of the NaBu resistant cells express the cancer stem cells marker, the CD133, whereas only 10% intact cells present the CD133 antigen. Furthermore, the endogenous expressing c-MET contributes to the survival of cancer stem cell population from the treatment of NaBu. The CD133+ group also presents a higher level of c-MET. A combination treatment of MET siRNA and NaBu efficiently prohibited the breast cancer progression, and the incident rate of the tumor decrease to 18%. This study may help to develop a new and alternative strategy for breast cancer therapy

    Hyperphosphorylated tau in young and middle-aged subjects

    The brain tissue obtained from ninety-five cognitively unimpaired subjects, with ages ranging from 22 to 50 years upon death, were immunohistochemically assessed for neurodegenerative changes, i.e., hyperphosphorylated tau (HPτ) and β-amyloid (Aβ) pathology in predilection neuroanatomical areas. HPτ pathology was observed in the transentorhinal cortex and/or the locus coeruleus (LC) in 33% of the subjects, without any obvious risk factors known to alter the microtubule-associated protein. HPτ pathology was noted in the LC in 25 out of 83 subjects (30%), lacking concomitant cortical Aβ or transentorhinal HPτ pathology. This observation was present even when assessing only one routine section of 7 μm thickness. The recent suggestion of prion-like propagation of neurodegeneration and the finding of neurodegeneration being quite common in middle-aged persons is alarming. It is noteworthy, however, that a substantial number of neurologically unimpaired subjects even at a very old age display only sparse to modest extent of neurodegenerative pathology. Thus, only a subset of subjects with neurodegenerative changes early in life seem to progress to a symptomatic disease with ageing. This observation brings forth the notion that other, yet unknown modifying factors influence the progression of degeneration that leads to a symptomatic disorder. The known association between alterations in the LC and mood disorders, and the finding of the LC being frequently affected with HPτ pathology suggest that clinicopathological studies on young subjects both with or without mood disorders are warranted
