Using data visualization in creativity workshops: a new tool in the designer's kit
Creativity workshops have proved effective in drawing out unexpected requirements and giving form to participants' novel ideas. Here, we introduce a new addition to the workshop designer's toolkit: interactive data visualization, used as stimuli to prompt insight and inspire creativity. We first describe a pilot study in which we compare the effectiveness of two different styles of data visualization. Here we found that a less ambiguous style was more effective in supporting idea generation. Following this, we report a case study in which we employ data visualization within a service design workshop, where participants gain insights that are later realized in design ideas
Variations of the Mid-IR Aromatic Features Inside and Among Galaxies
We present the results of a systematic study of mid-IR spectra of Galactic
regions, Magellanic HII regions, and galaxies of various types (dwarf, spiral,
starburst), observed by the satellites ISO and Spitzer. We study the relative
variations of the 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.3 micron features inside spatially
resolved objects (such as M82, M51, 30 Doradus, M17 and the Orion Bar), as well
as among 90 integrated spectra of 50 objects. Our main results are that the
6.2, 7.7 and 8.6 micron bands are essentially tied together, while the ratios
between these bands and the 11.3 micron band varies by one order of magnitude.
This implies that the properties of the PAHs are remarkably universal
throughout our sample, and that the relative variations of the band ratios are
mainly controled by the fraction of ionized PAHs. In particular, we show that
we can rule out both the modification of the PAH size distribution, and the
mid-infrared extinction, as an explanation of these variations. Using a few
well-studied Galactic regions (including the spectral image of the Orion Bar),
we give an empirical relation between the I(6.2)/I(11.3) ratio and the
ionization/recombination ratio G0/ne.Tgas^0.5, therefore providing a useful
quantitative diagnostic tool of the physical conditions in the regions where
the PAH emission originates. Finally, we discuss the physical interpretation of
the I(6.2)/I(11.3) ratio, on galactic size scales.Comment: Accepted by the ApJ, 67 pages, 70 figure
Space shuttle navigation analysis
A detailed analysis of space shuttle navigation for each of the major mission phases is presented. A covariance analysis program for prelaunch IMU calibration and alignment for the orbital flight tests (OFT) is described, and a partial error budget is presented. The ascent, orbital operations and deorbit maneuver study considered GPS-aided inertial navigation in the Phase III GPS (1984+) time frame. The entry and landing study evaluated navigation performance for the OFT baseline system. Detailed error budgets and sensitivity analyses are provided for both the ascent and entry studies
Zenithal bistability in a nematic liquid crystal device with a monostable surface condition
The ground-state director configurations in a grating-aligned, zenithally bistable nematic device are calculated in two dimensions using a Q tensor approach. The director profiles generated are well described by a one-dimensional variation of the director across the width of the device, with the distorted region near the grating replaced by an effective surface anchoring energy. This work shows that device bistability can in fact be achieved by using a monostable surface term in the one-dimensional model. This implies that is should be possible to construct a device showing zenithal bistability without the need for a micropatterned surface
Roll diffusion bonding of titanium alloy panels
Roll diffusion bonding technique is used for fabricating T-stiffened panel assemblies from titanium alloy. The single unit fabrication exhibits excellent strength characteristics under tensile and compressive loads. This program is applied to structures in which weight/strength ratio and integral construction are important considerations
Classical model for bulk-ensemble NMR quantum computation
We present a classical model for bulk-ensemble NMR quantum computation: the
quantum state of the NMR sample is described by a probability distribution over
the orientations of classical tops, and quantum gates are described by
classical transition probabilities. All NMR quantum computing experiments
performed so far with three quantum bits can be accounted for in this classical
model. After a few entangling gates, the classical model suffers an exponential
decrease of the measured signal, whereas there is no corresponding decrease in
the quantum description. We suggest that for small numbers of quantum bits, the
quantum nature of NMR quantum computation lies in the ability to avoid an
exponential signal decrease.Comment: 14 pages, no figures, revte
Measurement of the differential cross-section of B + meson production in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV at ATLAS
The production cross-section of B + mesons is measured as a function of transverse momentum p T and rapidity y in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energy s√=7 TeV, using 2.4 fb−1 of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The differential production cross-sections, determined in the range 9 GeV < p T < 120 GeV and |y| < 2.25, are compared to next-to-leading-order theoretical predictions
