    Quantum and classical solutions for free particle in wedge billiards

    We have studied the quantum and classical solutions of a particle constrained to move inside a sector circular billiard with angle Ξw\theta_w and its pacman complement with angle 2π−Ξw2\pi-\theta_w. In these billiards rotational invariance is broken and angular momentum is no longer a conserved quantum number. The "fractional" angular momentum quantum solutions are given in terms of Bessel functions of fractional order, with indices λp=pπΞw\lambda_p={p\pi \over {\theta_w}}, p=1,2,...p=1,2,... for the sector and ÎŒq=qπ2π−Ξw\mu_q={q\pi \over {2\pi - \theta_w}}, q=1,2...q=1,2... for the pacman. We derive a ``duality'' relation between both fractional indices given by λp=pÎŒq2ÎŒq−q\lambda_p={{p\mu_q} \over {2\mu_q - q}} and ÎŒq=qλp2λp−p\mu_q = {{q\lambda_p} \over {2\lambda_p - p}}. We find that the average of the angular momentum L^z\hat L_z is zero but the average of L^z2\hat L^2_z has as eigenvalues λp2\lambda_p^2 and ÎŒq2\mu_q^2. We also make a connection of some classical solutions to their quantum wave eigenfunction counterparts.Comment: 10 pages and two PostScript figure

    Full capacitance-matrix effects in driven Josephson-junction arrays

    We study the dynamic response to external currents of periodic arrays of Josephson junctions, in a resistively capacitively shunted junction (RCSJ) model, including full capacitance-matrix effects}. We define and study three different models of the capacitance matrix Cr⃗,r⃗â€ČC_{\vec{r},\vec{r}'}: Model A includes only mutual capacitances; Model B includes mutual and self capacitances, leading to exponential screening of the electrostatic fields; Model C includes a dense matrix Cr⃗,r⃗â€ČC_{\vec{r},\vec{r}'} that is constructed approximately from superposition of an exact analytic solution for the capacitance between two disks of finite radius and thickness. In the latter case the electrostatic fields decay algebraically. For comparison, we have also evaluated the full capacitance matrix using the MIT fastcap algorithm, good for small lattices, as well as a corresponding continuum effective-medium analytic evaluation of a finite voltage disk inside a zero-potential plane. In all cases the effective Cr⃗,r⃗â€ČC_{\vec{r},\vec{r}'} decays algebraically with distance, with different powers. We have then calculated current voltage characteristics for DC+AC currents for all models. We find that there are novel giant capacitive fractional steps in the I-V's for Models B and C, strongly dependent on the amount of screening involved. We find that these fractional steps are quantized in units inversely proportional to the lattice sizes and depend on the properties of Cr⃗,r⃗â€ČC_{\vec{r},\vec{r}'}. We also show that the capacitive steps are not related to vortex oscillations but to localized screened phase-locking of a few rows in the lattice.     Pauli principle and chaos in a magnetized disk

    We present results of a detailed quantum mechanical study of a gas of NN noninteracting electrons confined to a circular boundary and subject to homogeneous dc plus ac magnetic fields (B=Bdc+Bacf(t)(B=B_{dc}+B_{ac}f(t), with f(t+2π/ω0)=f(t)f(t+2\pi/\omega_0)=f(t)). We earlier found a one-particle {\it classical} phase diagram of the (scaled) Larmor frequency ω~c=omegac/ω0\tilde\omega_c=omega_c/\omega_0 {\rm vs} Ï”=Bac/Bdc\epsilon=B_{ac}/B_{dc} that separates regular from chaotic regimes. We also showed that the quantum spectrum statistics changed from Poisson to Gaussian orthogonal ensembles in the transition from classically integrable to chaotic dynamics. Here we find that, as a function of NN and (Ï”,ω~c)(\epsilon,\tilde\omega_c), there are clear quantum signatures in the magnetic response, when going from the single-particle classically regular to chaotic regimes. In the quasi-integrable regime the magnetization non-monotonically oscillates between diamagnetic and paramagnetic as a function of NN. We quantitatively understand this behavior from a perturbation theory analysis. In the chaotic regime, however, we find that the magnetization oscillates as a function of NN but it is {\it always} diamagnetic. Equivalent results are also presented for the orbital currents. We also find that the time-averaged energy grows like N2N^2 in the quasi-integrable regime but changes to a linear NN dependence in the chaotic regime. In contrast, the results with Bose statistics are akin to the single-particle case and thus different from the fermionic case.     One Loop Multiphoton Helicity Amplitudes

    We use the solutions to the recursion relations for double-off-shell fermion currents to compute helicity amplitudes for nn-photon scattering and electron-positron annihilation to photons in the massless limit of QED. The form of these solutions is simple enough to allow {\it all}\ of the integrations to be performed explicitly.     Complete O(alpha) QED corrections to polarized Compton scattering

    The complete QED corrections of O(alpha) to polarized Compton scattering are calculated for finite electron mass and including the real corrections induced by the processes e^- gamma -> e^- gamma gamma and e^- gamma -> e^- e^- e^+. All relevant formulas are listed in a form that is well suited for a direct implementation in computer codes. We present a detailed numerical discussion of the O(alpha)-corrected cross section and the left-right asymmetry in the energy range of present and future Compton polarimeters, which are used to determine the beam polarization of high-energetic e^+- beams. For photons with energies of a few eV and electrons with SLC energies or smaller, the corrections are of the order of a few per mille. In the energy range of future e^+e^- colliders, however, they reach 1-2% and cannot be neglected in a precision polarization measurement.Comment: 31 pages, latex, 16 postscript figure

    Variety of transversus thoracis muscle in relation to the internal thoracic artery: an autopsy study of 120 subjects

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The transversus thoracis muscle is a thin muscular layer on the inner surface of the anterior thoracic wall that is always in concern during harvesting of the internal thoracic artery. Because the muscle is poorly described in the surgical literature, the aim of the present study is to examine in details its variations.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The data was obtained at standard autopsies of 120 Caucasian subjects (Bulgarians) of both sexes (97 males and 23 females), ranging in age from 18 to 91 years (mean age 52.8 ± 17.8 years). The transversus thoracis morphology was thoroughly examined on the inner surface of the chest plates collected after routine incisions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>An overall examination revealed that in majority of cases the transversus thoracis slips formed a complete muscular layer (left - 75.8%, right - 83.3%) or some of the slips (left - 22.5%, right - 15%) or all of them (left - 1.7%, right - 1.7%) were quite separated. Rarely (left - 3.3%, right - 5.8%), some fibrous slips of the transversus thoracis were noted. In 55.8% of the cases there was left/right muscle symmetry; 44.2% of the muscles were asymmetrical. Most commonly, the highest muscle attachment was to the second (left - 53.3%, right - 37.5%) or third rib (left - 29.2%, right - 46.7%). The sixth rib was the most common lowest attachment (left - 94.2%, right - 89.2%). Most frequently, the muscle was composed of four (left - 31.7%, right - 44.2%) or fifth slips (left - 53.3%, right - 40.8%).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study provides detailed basic information on the variety of the transversus thoracic muscle. It also defines the range of the clearly visible, uncovered by the muscle part of the internal thoracic artery and the completeness of the muscular layer over it. The knowledge of these peculiar muscle-arterial relations would definitely be beneficial to cardiac surgeon in performing fast and safe arterial harvesting.</p

    Global, regional, and national burden of stroke, 1990–2016: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016

This is an Open Access article under the CC BY 4.0 license Background: Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide and the economic costs of treatment and post-stroke care are substantial. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic, comparable method of quantifying health loss by disease, age, sex, year, and location to provide information to health systems and policy makers on more than 300 causes of disease and injury, including stroke. The results presented here are the estimates of burden due to overall stroke and ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke from GBD 2016. Methods: We report estimates and corresponding uncertainty intervals (UIs), from 1990 to 2016, for incidence, prevalence, deaths, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). DALYs were generated by summing YLLs and YLDs. Cause-specific mortality was estimated using an ensemble modelling process with vital registration and verbal autopsy data as inputs. Non-fatal estimates were generated using Bayesian meta-regression incorporating data from registries, scientific literature, administrative records, and surveys. The Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a summary indicator generated using educational attainment, lagged distributed income, and total fertility rate, was used to group countries into quintiles. Findings: In 2016, there were 5·5 million (95% UI 5·3 to 5·7) deaths and 116·4 million (111·4 to 121·4) DALYs due to stroke. The global age-standardised mortality rate decreased by 36·2% (−39·3 to −33·6) from 1990 to 2016, with decreases in all SDI quintiles. Over the same period, the global age-standardised DALY rate declined by 34·2% (−37·2 to −31·5), also with decreases in all SDI quintiles. There were 13·7 million (12·7 to 14·7) new stroke cases in 2016. Global age-standardised incidence declined by 8·1% (−10·7 to −5·5) from 1990 to 2016 and decreased in all SDI quintiles except the middle SDI group. There were 80·1 million (74·1 to 86·3) prevalent cases of stroke globally in 2016; 41·1 million (38·0 to 44·3) in women and 39·0 million (36·1 to 42·1) in men. Interpretation: Although age-standardised mortality rates have decreased sharply from 1990 to 2016, the decrease in age-standardised incidence has been less steep, indicating that the burden of stroke is likely to remain high. Planned updates to future GBD iterations include generating separate estimates for subarachnoid haemorrhage and intracerebral haemorrhage, generating estimates of transient ischaemic attack, and including atrial fibrillation as a risk factor.     The CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs. Two temperate Earth-mass planet candidates around Teegarden’s Star

    Context.Teegarden’s Star is the brightest and one of the nearest ultra-cool dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. For its late spectral type (M7.0 V),the star shows relatively little activity and is a prime target for near-infrared radial velocity surveys such as CARMENES.Aims.As part of the CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs, we obtained more than 200 radial-velocity measurements of Teegarden’sStar and analysed them for planetary signals.Methods.We find periodic variability in the radial velocities of Teegarden’s Star. We also studied photometric measurements to rule out stellarbrightness variations mimicking planetary signals.Results.We find evidence for two planet candidates, each with 1.1M⊕minimum mass, orbiting at periods of 4.91 and 11.4 d, respectively. Noevidence for planetary transits could be found in archival and follow-up photometry. Small photometric variability is suggestive of slow rotationand old age.Conclusions.The two planets are among the lowest-mass planets discovered so far, and they are the first Earth-mass planets around an ultra-cooldwarf for which the masses have been determined using radial velocities.We thank the referee Rodrigo DĂ­az for a careful review andhelpful comments.
