The understanding of the three-dimensional graphical behavior of the L-L-S phase equilibrium as a valuable tool to avoid spurious or incoherent experimental data

The complexity and variety of possible behaviors of the quaternary liquid-liquid, liquid-liquid-solid equilibrium at constant temperature are very high and, sometimes, are not well understood. It is not difficult to find references in literature where important misinterpretations and mistakes are committed as a consequence of applying a non-adequate experimental methodology and a lack of the spatial point of view. Thus, the objective of the present paper is to show several examples where special behaviors are selected to clarify some aspects concerning the experimental determination and graphical representation of liquid-liquid-solid equilibrium data, and emphasize the importance of the knowledge and consideration of the qualitative expected behavior of the system under study, obtained from the binaries.Universidad de Alicant

Geometrical aspects of the azeotropic liquid-liquid-vapour phase equilibria

The ternary isobaric liquid-liquid-vapour and liquid-vapour equilibrium can be very complex and may present a wide variety of three-dimensional representations, which sometimes are not very well understood. This paper presents several examples of possible complex spatial behaviours with different kind of azeotropes. These examples have been selected to clarify the expected projections deduced from the binaries and to help in the understanding of these type of equilibrium as well as in the experimental data determination and interpretation.

Resumen publicado en el libro de actas del congresoThe complexity and variety of possible behaviours of the quaternary liquid-liquid, liquid-liquid-solid equilibrium at constant temperature and pressure and the ternary isobaric or isothermal liquid-liquid-vapor equilibria are very high and, sometimes, the phase equilibria diagrams appear incomplete and not clearly explained. It is not difficult to find references in the literature where important misinterpretation and mistakes are committed as a consequence of applying a non-adequate experimental methodology and a lack of the spatial point of view. Thus, the objective of the present paper is to show some examples where special behaviours are selected to clarify some aspects concerning the experimental determination and graphical representation of liquid-liquid-solid and liquid-liquid-vapor equilibrium data, and remark on the importance of the knowledge and consideration of the qualitative expected behaviour of the system under study, obtained from the binaries.

    Get PDF

Multicomponent rectification: a new method of calculation

Comunicación presentada en el 7th Mediterranean Congress of Chemical Engineering. EXPOQUIMIA’96. Fira Barcelona. Resumen publicado en el libro de actas del congreso (P.3.7)This paper presents a series of calculation procedures for computer design of ternary distillation columns overcoming the iterative equilibrium calculations necessary in these kind of problems and, thus, reducing the calculation time. The proposed procedures include different interpolation (simple interpolation with distances, interpolation by intercepting lines from the three or four nearest points and interpolation using linear fitting of compositions or compositions and enthalpies) and intersection methods to solve the equilibrium equations and the mass and energy balances (intersection the operative line and the enthalpy-composition surface). The calculation programs proposed also include the possibility of rigorous solution of mass and energy balances and equilibrium relations, and can be easily generalized for multicomponent mixtures.Universidad de Alicant

Procedures for minimun reflux ratio calculation and for the optimization of distallate flow rate in distillation columns

Comunicación presentada en el 7th Mediterranean Congress of Chemical Engineering. EXPOQUIMIA’96. Fira Barcelona. Resumen publicado en el libro de actas del congresoThis poster presents a design method of multicomponent distillation columns that offers the possibility of solving the equilibrium equations and the mass and enthalpy balances by a rigorous method and different approximate methods, optimizing, by the simplex algorithm, the distillate flow rate for a specified product separation and calculating the number of stages and the optimum feed location. New methods for the calculation of the minimum reflux ratio for multicomponent distillation columns are also presented. The main problem involved in the rigorous calculation of the minimum reflux ratio is the great number of iterations involved, each one requiring the calculation of a distillation column. Nevertheless, this search can be orientated and simplified on considering the conditions that must be fulfilled in such an operating condition. In accordance with this, four different methods have been suggested, based in the desig method of distillation columns for multicomponent mixtures.Universidad de Alicant
