    Electronic transport properties of (fluorinated) metal phthalocyanine

    The magnetic and transport properties of the metal phthalocyanine (MPc) and F16_{16}MPc (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Ag) families of molecules in contact with S-Au wires are investigated by density functional theory within the local density approximation, including local electronic correlations on the central metal atom. The magnetic moments are found to be considerably modified under fluorination. In addition, they do not depend exclusively on the configuration of the outer electronic shell of the central metal atom (as in isolated MPc and F16_{16}MPc) but also on the interaction with the leads. Good agreement between the calculated conductance and experimental results is obtained. For M = Ag, a high spin filter efficiency and conductance is observed, giving rise to a potentially high sensitivity for chemical sensor applications.Comment: 8 pages (two-column), 8 figure

    Magnetic, electronic and vibrational properties of metal and fluorinated metal phthalocyanines

    The magnetic and electronic properties of metal phthalocyanines (MPc) and fluorinated metal phthalocyanines (F16_{16}MPc) are studied by means of spin density functional theory (SDFT). Several metals (M) such as Ca, all first d-row transition metals and Ag are investigated. By considering different open shell transition metals it is possible to tune the electronic properties of MPc, in particular the electronic molecular gap and total magnetic moment. Besides assigning the structural and electronic properties of MPc and F16_{16}MPc, the vibrational modes analysis of the ScPc\textendash ZnPc series have been studied and correlated to experimental measurements when available.Comment: 28 pages (preprint style), several figure

    Students' Reluctance to Attend Office Hours: Reasons and Suggested Solutions

    This paper focuses on investigating students’ reasons for their reluctance to attend faculty members’ office hours. Study participants included 500 male and female students from the Colleges of Engineering (n = 248) and Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) (n = 252) at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). The study followed a descriptive-analytical approach, and a questionnaire was utilized to collect people’s views. The results of the study indicate that the rates of SQU students’ attendance to office hours were low, and some students (11.2%) do not attend at all as they consider these office hours a waste of time. The main reasons behind the students’ lack of interest in office hours were busy student timetables, conflicts between faculty office hours and students’ timetables, and easier and faster ways of getting information than visiting faculty members. Additional reasons were related to faculty members’ personalities and their discouraging attitudes toward attending office hours. The researchers recommend that SQU adopt a new strategy for encouraging faculty members to hold office hours, familiarizing students with the importance of office hours and assigning part of a course’s grades to meeting with faculty members’ office hours

    Transient dynamic impact suppression of a Baja chassis using frontal and rear shock absorbers

    This paper investigates the behaviour of impact loading on a Baja vehicle chassis with frontal and rear shock absorbers, using transient dynamic analysis under different assumptions of contact conditions. Using a Baja car, a transient dynamic impact is performed in ANSYS Workbench 14.0, where the maximum deformation, stress and strains are calculated over duration of the particular impact. The mathematical model of the chassis is derived based on Kelvin model in order to design the best parameters of stiffness and damping coefficient in shock absorbers to minimise the deformation of the frame with the same impact. To study the effects of shock absorber under loading on a vehicle chassis, multiple finite element simulations are performed with different methodologies. Each methodology uses a different assumption on loading and boundary conditions, which leads to different results

    Conceptual framework for systemic capacity strengthening for health policy and systems research

    Health policy and systems research (HPSR) is critical in developing health systems to better meet the health needs of their populations. The highly contextualised nature of health systems point to the value of local knowledge and the need for context-embedded HPSR. Despite such need, relatively few individuals, groups or organisations carry out HPSR, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. Greater effort is required to strengthen capacity for, and build the field of, HPSR by capturing the multilevel and nuanced representation of HPSR across contexts. No comprehensive frameworks were found that inform systemic HPSR capacity strengthening. Existing literature on capacity strengthening for health research and development tends to focus on individual-level capacity with less attention to collective, organisational and network levels. This paper proposes a comprehensive framework for systemic capacity strengthening for HPSR, uniquely drawing attention to the blurred boundaries and amplification potential for synergistic capacity strengthening efforts across the individual, organisational and network levels. Further, it identifies guiding values and principles that consciously acknowledge and manage the power dynamics inherent to capacity strengthening work. The framework was developed drawing on available literature and was peer-reviewed by the Board and Thematic Working Groups of Health Systems Global. While the framework focuses on HPSR, it may provide a useful heuristic for systemic approaches to capacity strengthening more generally; facilitate its mainstreaming within organisations and networks and help maintain a focused approach to, and structure repositories of resources on, capacity strengthening
