IS THERE LIFE BEYOND THE ISI JOURNALS LISTS? THE INTERNATIONAL IMPACT OF SPANISH, ITALIAN, FRENCH AND GERMAN ECONOMICS JOURNALS

    Get PDF
This comparative study looks at the international impact of leading economics journals published in Spain, Italy, France and Germany. It also aims to establish whether they play a similar role in any of these 4 countries. For this purpose data were collected on the number of times that articles published in these journals are cited in international journals on the ISI Journals lists. The study focused on the number and characteristics of the citations received during the period 1996-2004 by articles published between 1995 and 1999 in a limited number of Spanish, Italian, French and German journals. The international impact of the Spanish journals was found to be similar in size and characteristics to that of the Italian publications. However, it differed sharply from the impact of the highest-ranking French and German journals. These last received a higher volume of citations, some of which also showed very different qualitative characteristics.

    A 0535+26: Back in business

In May/June 2005, after 10 years of inactivity, the Be/X-ray binary system A 0535+26 underwent a major X-ray outburst. In this paper data are presented from 10 years of optical, IR and X-ray monitoring showing the behaviour of the system during the quiescent epoch and the lead up to the new outburst. The results show the system going through a period when the Be star in the system had a minimal circumstellar disk and then a dramatic disk recovery leading, presumably, to the latest flare up of X-ray emission. The data are interpreted in terms of the state of the disk and its interaction with the neutron star companion.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

A study of the B and Be star population in the field of the LMC open cluster NGC2004 with VLT-FLAMES

Observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster LMC-NGC2004 and its surrounding region have been obtained with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. 25 Be stars were discovered; the proportion of Be stars compared to B-type stars is found to be of the same order in the LMC and in the Galaxy fields. 23 hot stars were discovered as spectroscopic binaries (SB1 and SB2), 5 of these are found to be eclipsing systems from the MACHO database, with periods of a few days. About 75% of the spectra in our sample are polluted by hydrogen (Halpha and Hgamma), [SII] and [NII] nebular lines. These lines are typical of HII regions. They could be associated with patchy nebulosities with a bi-modal distribution in radial velocity, with higher values (+335 kms^{-1}) preferentially seen inside the southern part of the known bubble LMC4 observed in HI at 21 cm.Comment: 12 pages, 17 figures, accepted to A&

Multiwavelength observations of the Be/X-ray binary 4U1145-619

We report optical and infrared observations of the massive X-ray binary system 4U1145-619 (V801 Cen) which show that the circumstellar disc of the Be star component is in decline. Infrared J,H,K,L magnitudes of V801Cen have been monitored from 1993 March to 1996 April. H alpha spectra have been obtained throughout the same period. We find that both the infrared excess and the Balmer emission have been in decline throughout the period of observations. A 13 year optical and X-ray history of the source has been collated, revealing a possible correlation between the optical and X-ray activity. In addition, we have used u,v,b,y,beta indices, corrected for both circumstellar and interstellar effects, to calculate the physical parameters of the underlying B star.Comment: 8 pages postscript. The Temperature Structure of Be Star Disks in the Small Magellanic Cloud

The temperature structure of Be star circumstellar disks at the sub-solar metallicity appropriate to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is investigated. It is found that for central stars of the same spectral type, Be star disks in the SMC are systematically hotter by several thousand degrees compared to Milky Way (MW) disks with the same density structure. For early spectral types (B0e - B3e), this results in systematically smaller H{\alpha} equivalent widths for Be stars in the SMC. The implication of this result on Be star frequency comparisons between MW and SMC clusters is shown to be a 5 - 10% lowering of the detection efficiency of Be stars in SMC clusters. These calculations are also compared to the known H{\alpha} equivalent width distributions in the MW and SMC. For the MW, reasonable agreement is found; however, for the SMC, the match is not as good and systematically larger Be star disks may be required.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in the astrophysical Journa

EL IMPACTO EXTERIOR DE LAS REVISTAS ESPAÑOLAS DE ECONOMIA

    Get PDF

Why did Spanish Regions not Converge before the Civil War? Agglomeration Economies and (Regional) Growth Revisited

In this paper we explore the relationship between the presence of agglomeration economies and regional economic growth in Spain during the period 1870-1930. The study allows us to revisit the existence of a trade-off between economic growth and territorial cohesion, and also to examine whether the existence of agglomeration economies could explain the upswing in regional income inequality during the early stages of development. In doing so, we present alternative indicators for agglomeration economies and estimate conditional growth regressions at province (NUTS3) level. In line with new economic geography models, agglomeration economies in a context of market integration widened regional inequality in the second half of the 19th century and hindered its reduction during the early decades of the 20th.En este artículo se analiza la existencia de una relación entre la presencia de economías de aglomeración y el crecimiento económico regional en España durante el periodo 1870-1930.
