    HOT-SPOT PHENOMENON IN PV SYSTEMS WITH OVERHEAD LINES PARTIAL SHADING

    This paper deals with the occurrence of hot-spot phenomenon in photovoltaic systems under PV partial shadowing. In an experimental campaign, the hot-spot phenomenon was revealed on a PV installation in Italy, caused my medium voltage overhead lines shadowing the PV cells. Starting from these practice case studies, at the SolarTech laboratory of Politecnico di Milano, the conditions for hot-spot phenomenon occurrence due to the overhead lines shading the PV cells were reproduced. Two experimental campaigns were carried out to investigate the current-voltage and power-voltage characteristics, and the energy production. In each experimental campaign, the built shadowing structure was considered fixed, and different shadowing conditions were created based on the natural displacement of the sun. Still, for occurring the hot- spot phenomenon during the laboratory tests, more PV modules must be connected in parallel

    Characterization of Bifacial Photovoltaic Modules Based on I-V Curves Outdoor Measurement

    Photovoltaic (PV) systems are well known for their simplicity of design, environmental friendliness, and low maintenance. Among the PV technologies, the behaviour of bifacial PV modules was studied in this research. Measurements of the I-V curves were carried out in the SolarTechLAB test facility at the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano, Italy, to detect the bifacial PV module behaviour, mainly in terms of power performance. In particular, I-V and power-voltage curves were measured at different tilt angles to consider several irradiance and cell temperature levels with both sides uncovered as well as with the back side covered. This last configuration was tested to evaluate the contribution of the rear face in the overall photoelectric conversion process. The comparison between the bifacial and monofacial operations highlighted that the power at the maximum power point of the bifacial operation can increase up to 13%. At the same time, leaving the rear face free allows for reducing the bifacial cell temperature up to about 6°C

    Analysis and validation of 24 hours ahead neural network forecasting of photovoltaic output power

    In this paper an artificial neural network for photovoltaic plant energy forecasting is proposed and analyzed in terms of its sensitivity with respect to the input data sets. Furthermore, the accuracy of the method has been studied as a function of the training data sets and error definitions. The analysis is based on experimental activities carried out on a real photovoltaic power plant accompanied by clear sky model. In particular, this paper deals with the hourly energy prediction for all the daylight hours of the following day, based on 48 hours ahead weather forecast. This is very important due to the predictive features requested by smart grid application: renewable energy sources planning, in particular storage system sizing, and market of energy

    Outdoor Performance of Organic Photovoltaics: Comparative Analysis

    Organic photovoltaic (OPV) solar cells represent an emerging and promising solution for low-cost clean energy production. Being flexible and semi-transparent and having significant advantages over conventional PV technologies, OPV modules represent an innovative solution even in applications that cannot be based on traditional PV systems. However, relatively low efficiencies, poor long-term stability, and thermal issues have so far prevented the commercialization of this technology. This paper describes two outdoor experimental campaigns that compared the operation of OPV modules with traditional PV modules—in particular crystalline silicon and copper–indium– selenium (CIS)—and assessed the OPV modules’ power generation potential in vertical installation and facing towards the cardinal directions

    Characterisation of aberrant crypt foci in carcinogen-treated rats: association with intestinal carcinogenesis.

    Carcinogen-treated rats develop foci of aberrant crypts in the colon (ACFs) that have been interpreted as preneoplastic lesions. To characterise ACFs further, we studied in the unsectioned colon of rats the number, multiplicity, some morphological characteristics and the type of mucin production in ACFs. In ACFs observed 115 days after the administration of 50 mg kg-1 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH), crypt multiplicity [number of aberrant crypts (AC) per focus] was positively correlated (P < 0.0001) with the reduction of goblet cells, and with luminal and nuclear alterations in the cells surrounding the lumen of the ACs. We studied mucin production in the unsectioned colon, demonstrating that ACFs producing sulphomucins (like the normal distal rat colon) were progressively reduced when ACF multiplicity increased, whereas ACFs containing sialomucins (correlated with an increased risk of colon cancer) or both sulphomucins and sialomucins increased with crypt multiplicity. We also studied ACFs in the colon and the occurrence of intestinal tumours in rats treated with azoxymethane (AOM; 64 mg kg-1). A significant association was found (P = 0.04) between tumours and the presence of 'large' ACFs (AC/ACF > 14 crypts) and a borderline significant association (P = 0.057) between the presence of tumours and sialomucin-producing ACFs. We found no association between the number of ACFs, ACF multiplicity and the presence of tumours

    Performance Assessment of Mismatch Mitigation Methodologies Using Field Data in Solar Photovoltaic Systems

    Partial shading and other non‐ideal conditions cause electrical mismatches that reduce the output power generated by a photovoltaic (PV) system. It affects the overall performance and efficiency of PV systems. Therefore, a model is developed in MATLAB, which analyses the performance of the PV systems under real irradiance profiles and temperatures for various available mismatch mitigation methodologies, i.e., bypass diode, DC power optimizer, and differential power processing (DPP). More specifically, this study will help to understand the best mismatch reduction methodologies for a solar PV system under different scenarios. The results also are validated by comparing them with a similar PV system installed in SolarTechLAB, which also operates under the same irradiance and temperature conditions under which these models are tested. This study also presents novel results, covering discussions on the reverse voltage distribution under mismatch scenarios among bypass diode, DC power optimizer, and DPP techniques

    Reduction of colonic inflammation in HLA-B27 transgenic rats by feeding Marie MĂ©nard apples, rich in polyphenols

    Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are immunomediated ailments affecting millions of individuals. Although diet is regarded as an important factor influencing IBD, there are no accepted dietary recommendations presently available. We administered 7.6 % lyophilised apples obtained from two cultivars (Golden Delicious and Marie MĂ©nard, low and high in polyphenols, respectively) to HLA-B27 transgenic rats which develop spontaneous IBD. After 3 months feeding, rats fed Marie MĂ©nard apples had reduced myeloperoxidase activity (3.6 (sem 0.3) v. 2.2 (sem 0.2) U/g tissue; P <0.05) and reduced cyclo-oxygenase-2 (P <0.05) and inducible NO synthase gene expression (P <0.01) in the colon mucosa and significantly less diarrhoea (P <0.05), compared with control rats. Cell proliferation in the colon mucosa was reduced significantly by feeding Golden Delicious apples, with a borderline effect of Marie MĂ©nard apples. Gene expression profiling of the colon mucosa, analysed using the Whole Rat Genome 4 x 44 K Agilent Arrays, revealed a down-regulation of the pathways of PG synthesis, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling and TNFalpha-NF-kappaB in Marie MĂ©nard-fed rats. In the stools of the animals of this group we also measured a significant reduction of bacteria of the Bacteriodes fragilis group. In conclusion, the administration of Marie MĂ©nard apples, rich in polyphenols and used at present only in the manufacturing of cider, ameliorates colon inflammation in transgenic rats developing spontaneous intestinal inflammation, suggesting the possible use of these and other apple varieties to control inflammation in IBD patient
